@mash - is this January date from a Panasonic or Atomos press release? Thanks
btw. -- i can not understand why someone can see the remote start via HDMI as a useful feature? when using the shogun, everybody will choose the 10bit recording mode. that implies, that internal recording in the GH4 will not work anymore. so why should i like to start it on the camera?
the other -- much more annoying! -- aspect i see, concerns the GH4 power saving features, that always irritate me a lot. when power saving is active, you have to press the record button twice to start capturing. that's very distracting. i have lost important shots again and again because of this wonderful 'feature' and i could not figure out any way to disable this behavior completely.
Just use the shutter button to start/stop recording on the GH4.
This is a device that’s set to unleash total magic from the Sony A7S in 4K. It also offers a way for Panasonic GH4 users to record 4K in 10bit to ProRes rather than heavily compressed 8bit 4:2:0 H.264. For the Samsung NX1 it is also compelling, offering us a way to bypass the compression of H.265 altogether (and the lengthy transcoding stage), instead going straight to 4K ProRes in various flavours.
Curious as to why he recorded 10 bit color from a camera that only does 8 bit?
The Shogun records 8 bit in a 10 bit wrapper.
@tinyrobot. Good to know! Thanks. He should have clarified that in the video, kind of deceptive. I wish the A7s offered a 10 bit color space :( I would buy one this instant. It is the only reason I bought gh4.
Impressive. Most impressive.
First footage taken with Atomos Shogun and GH4 in 4K 10 Bit 422. Please watch it in 4K on youtube as I can´t upload in 4K here. Both youtube and Vimeo have compression problems so this is what is possible.
Thank you

People are still able to download the files off Vimeo if they are logged in.

One thing I have noticed on the Shogun. When recording in the GH4 Luminence Range of 0-255, the waveform on the Shogun shows super whites and blacks. When brought into After Effects, all of the range is there when the footage is interpreted as "HDTV (Rec. 709)". This really does not need to be set because AE seems to interpret the footage correctly. If you want the waveform on the Shogun to show the correct percentage values, you need to set the GH4 to 16-235. I just wish there was a way to change the waveform to correctly display 0-255 percentages. The GH4 histogram and zebras still don't display correctly with 0-255. I am afraid the old 16-235 studio swing will be with us for a while. All of those extra luminance steps going to waste.
I can pull those superwhites back from Shogun recordings in Resolve just fine – gives me about one extra stop.
