I cannot find anything that convinces me. Klein & Hummel MM 201 or M 52, Genelec 6010, Avantone Pro, Audioengine etc. are great but are "too big" for what I want. I am looking for something really small, portable, like the Ucube (80mmx80mm), but when I listened to them in the shop, I was disappointed. I only need a decent reference, so I don't have to edit with the sound coming from the MBP13 or the headphones. Appreciate suggestions.

Strongly suggest second ones.
They have very good coaxial drivers.
That was a quick response, cheers @Vitaliy_Kiselev, they look really good!
I just did same search myself not long time ago :-)
So-voioe speakers are very good as I know.
Btw, almost forgot.
If you want really cheap option:

I see BIN for $15. They have internal battery, remote, and simpl audio input (ignore the dock).
And very good sound, very good.
Logitech also had usb speakers using same drivers, you can try and search, but I am not sure if they sound the same, most probably they are weaker.
@Vitaliy_Kiselev logitech mm 50 is a bit too big for me, but sounds wonderful, a friend of mine has it. The HiVi and the So-voioe look both very interesting.
In this case this is the thing you need:
or
logitech mm 50 is a bit too big for me
Btw, this thing is quite small. I used them for presentation in case my small USB speaker was not appropriate (music, etc).
@Vitaliy_Kiselev Thanks, I will try out the Logitech USB Computer Speakers Model S-0155A, thats the size I was looking for, any experience how they sound?
any experience how they sound?
They have same drivers as m50, so hope that they sound very good.
Since m50 time small Logitech speakers just degraded. As far as I remember they bough audio firm who made all this, and later, as usual, marketing geniuses interfered. See my current post in the blog :-)
@Vitaliy_Kiselev I listened this morning in a shop to these Bose speakers. They are the smallest I saw so far with a really good sound, well built and heavy - but: expensive!

Thing with this is to just make decision :-)
If looking at absolute sound quality, So-voioe must be best.
Midrange is extremely good on mm50 and this old Logitech USB speakers.
No DIY references in topics about consumer products, until author do not ask especially about this.
This is common flaw of many forums, and is not allowed here.
VK really great finds! Honestly at these prices DIY is not going to happen. They are basically making $1 per unit. Crazy prices!
@Vitaliy_Kiselev @alcomposer I don't understand your latest post, is that in reference to my last post about the Bose speakers or something else? What DIY are you talking about?
Nope, ignore it. As I removed other post referencing DIY.
I'm very interested in the So-Voioe M5, has anybody heard them? Any chance of a discount buy?
@Bueller So-Voioe M5 are quite cheap already

I think they must be good.
Any chance of a discount buy?
LOL :-)
I would also like to have a pair of small size speakers, but physics come along, and i have just not hear any small size speakers that can really handell the low end. Eaven my Genelecs are in problem with low freqfenses.
For this thing small subs exist :-)
Like this one
They have larger one - M8 also.
Thanks VK. Must try it .
Btw, while it is not active speakers, small Energy RC are very good option with small USB amplifier
Manufacturing quality and speakers used are top notch, as well as sound.

There are some decent and affordable reference monitors these days. I have a pair of ESI NEAR 05s that I've used for years with satisfaction. Now there's a smaller and cheaper version the ESI uniK 04 http://www.esi-audio.com/products/?m=16
I see them for €137 a pair in Europe which is pretty good for what you get: http://www.thomann.de/gb/esi_unik_04.htm

Yep, I fully agree. yet suggest to check this Energy RC speakers, I very much like Energy RC line.
Btw, more suitable for this topic is
Seems very cheap and small.
http://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_ms16.htm
Or this one, as I like ribbon tweeters
http://www.thomann.de/gb/adam_artist_3_glossy_white_bstock.htm
Both, of course, require subwoofer added.
@Vitaliy, yes I also have a pair of Behringer B3030As with ribbons and they're good for the price. I recently compared them to the RCF Ayra Six and to my ears the ribbons were sharper and clearer. But this is getting off topic.
Adam's are good but not that cheap. I think that's the price for 1 speaker.
I don't recommend the 'Superlux BES5A' however. The sound is thin and the amps are a bit noisy. http://www.thomann.de/gb/superlux_bes5a.htm
