I am so tempted to buy this camera...but if the 7SII is only 6 months out or so I would wait anyone has info on this? I don't believe the rumors that the body will be completely different...
Sony Announces Addition of Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW Still Image Capture for New α Cameras
Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today announced user selectable Compressed and Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW image capture will be featured in the new α7S II once it arrives in stores this October.
Additionally, they have announced plans to add user selectable compressed or uncompressed 14-Bit RAW still image capture via firmware update to additional cameras beginning with the recently introduced α7R II full-frame mirrorless model.
“The voice of our α community remains the most important guiding force of our product development plans,” said Neal Manowitz, Deputy Vice President for Digital Imaging at Sony Electronics. “The addition of Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW processing is a direct result of customer feedback. Widely requested by photo and video enthusiasts, we believe the choice of RAW processing types will further elevate the performance of these extraordinary cameras.”
The α7S II and α7R II are compatible with Sony’s growing lineup of α -mount lenses, which now totals 63 different models including 12 native ‘FE’ full frame lenses. By early 2016, Sony will add an additional 8 new lenses to its FE full frame lineup, bringing the FE total to 20 lenses and the overall α -mount assortment to over 70 different models.
anyone got trustworthy info about overheating in 1080p? with external 4k recording will there be less or no overheating? I am so close to buy this camera...oh, anyone thinks a firmware update will come that addresses the overheat issue?
@olli66 I haven't heard much about 1080p overheating or external 4k recording helping things. If your intention is to shoot internal 1080p and/or external 4k, you should probably just save yourself $1,000 and buy the current model of A7s and use lenses that have OIS built-in. If you can wait a couple of months, then see if the A7s II manages to avoid overheating when recording internal 4k.
It seems very unlikely that a firmware upgrade will be able to correct overheating. It seems much more likely that vendors will come out with cooling cages with fans and/or heat sinks.
yes, I was thinking of getting the A7S but 42 MP...the A7RII would be perfect for me for video and stills. I can live with 1080p for longer recording situations but when I work on a music video or film with lots of takes (each a couple minutes) I need that 4k and can't deal with overheating issues
You could also consider adding some DRAM heat sinks behind the screen as some others have done with other cameras (like here)
FWIW, some people online have said that using an external recorder for 4k was working fine for them, but it seems a little silly to spend $3200 on a camera just so that you can spend another $1200-2000 on an external recorder for it. At that price, you could probably pick up a used a7s, a7r, and an external recorder for the a7s... and have a 1080p b camera.
a monitor like the assassin is on my wishlist since a long time. a color accurate display, LUTs for seeing live what your picture can/will look like...awesome stuff. so that one I was going to buy one day anyhow. still, many shoots I do I prefer to travel light without displays or whatever so I have to rely on the internal recording without overheating issues
My little test on the gimbal
@RomanLegion thanks for that. I enjoyed it. What gimbal did you use for that?
@RomanLegion Why the interest in the Sony as a supporter of BM and Digital Bolex?
@RomanLegion I want to know, too, which gimbal you used! pretty smooth footage!
@romanlegion what song is that?
@tinyrobot Basically, I've never purchased a Sony camera. The cameras I personally own are just BM and DB cameras. My Dad however, is an avid hobbyist photographer and just so happens to buy up every camera body released by nearly every major maker. It's pretty ludicrous. So... it gives me the opportunity to test out those cams once in a while. For me, I can see myself borrowing this thing quite a bit. It's incredibly useful for gimbal stuff or straight up handheld for that matter. @olli66 I am using the Varavon Birdycam 2. But don't let the gimbal brand deceive you. A variety of brands, in fact most gimbals out there all use Alex moss controllers and introduce some micro jitter into the footage if you're not using a stabilized or wide lens. This camera is AMAZING for stabilizing your shots. Gimbal brands don't matter too much with this thing. Neither the lens. You can run with a cheap gimbal, old vintage lenses, and your stuff will be pretty well rock steady. It's a dream come true honestly. @monowav The song is called Portal Hopping, by The Polish Ambassador
I felt the camera was a bit overhyped. However, after using it for the full time and putting well over 1,000 frames through the camera, I have to say: it’s really a fantastic body.
