    In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS 300D. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

    In March 2018, Canon launched products such as the EOS M50 mirrorless camera and EOS 2000D DSLR, which allow entry-level users to effortlessly enjoy capturing professional looking images. In striving to further expand its line-up, Canon has once again secured the leading share of the global market in 2018.

    In September 2018, in pursuit of further expanding the boundaries of image capture and new possibilities in visual expression, Canon launched the EOS R mirrorless camera, equipped with a full-frame sensor, as part of the EOS R System, a new imaging system with lenses at its core. What’s more, in February 2019 Canon launched the EOS RP – a small, light and practical full-frame mirrorless camera with impressive image quality - and announced six new RF lenses, currently under development, as part of its plan to expand the EOS R System.

  • As for camera demand, amid ongoing market contraction, we expect a significant drop in demand due to COVID-19 this year. However, in the third quarter, the camera market was stronger than expected thanks to a gradual increase in image capturing opportunities as people became more active. Taking this into account, we raised our full-year projection for the interchangeable-lens camera market by 0.5 million units to 5.9 million units.

    Although we expect our full-year sales to decline in line with the market to 2.7 million units, the EOS R5 and EOS R6, new cameras equipped with full-frame sensors that we launched in the third quarter, have recorded strong sales since their introduction thanks to the high marks they have received for their revolutionary video recording function, AF performance, and image stabilizing function.

    Furthermore, for our enhanced lineup of lenses, we are achieving sales growth and improving product mix through synergy with camera bodies.

    COVID, of course, helped you to destroy camera industry, but you had been working good on this anyway, Canon managers.

  • What a waste of talent and experience

  • According to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Canon announced that it would raise its consolidated net income for the fiscal year ending December 2020 over previous estimations due to strong sales of its mirrorless cameras, particularly in China.

    Canon originally projected that it would come about 98 billion yen (~$944 million) short of its 2019 fiscal year numbers, but revised that number on January 14 to 28 billion yen higher (~$270 million) to 80 billion yen (~$771 million) short of 2019’s net income numbers.

    All Japanese companies cooked sales numbers like hell, as each manager wanted to survive.

    Also journalists have no idea how hard for Canon had been to make their R5 and R6 cameras, you can see it all in cameras design that had been rushed and very non-optimal due to lot of new inexperienced engineers involved.

    No one in Canon actually knows where to find funds and resources to make really new LSI.

    All industry actually pray that current idiotic trend for raw and low compression formats will continue, as it does not require advanced LSi or processes.

    Interesting how all camera companies strictly repeated all errors of hi-fi equipment Japanese makers.

    As managers lack any vision they try to just push prices to compensate units ales loss, this drives cameras into more niche products, unit sales drop again and we go into new cycle. Life of idiots.
