I was kind of disappointed since 'proper' has another meaning on PV...

Proper considering cheap refurbished/used notebooks means exactly thinkpad, the older - the more proper.

Remember there is even new motherboards manufactured for classic ThinkPads. They have USB3 and all the newest components! (Probably not the most inexpensive, but still very cool!)
