Driftwood VY Canis Majoris: This thread will now be integrated into 'Driftwood Series 6 Settings'

  • @obscura i will sure try this but as for now no,..i already used sedna aaq1 for this film i am busy with,..until may 12th i cannot patch either of my cam to anything.....

  • @rajamalik manual lens maybe this is the issue or 8GB 95Mbit SDHC card not the sdxc, maybe one of this two issues are resulting into success.

  • @obscura These settings are tweaked as hell. Don't combine stuff. What is the point of putting the sedna matrix in the Canis setting? These settings are made by Driftwood and everything is dependent on each other. Use Sedna or use Canis but don't go messing with them when you don't know what you are doing. He probably did hours of testing and you just mix them and assume that everything works. Are you prepared for hours of Streamparser analysis? If the answer is no then don't mix settings. Leave it to the professionals.

  • @obscura i have 3 64gb sdxc's so this may be falls with my lenses i have all of them with pane lumix g....@sohus i told him the same merging canis with sedna isn't a good idea,..but some hybrids work,..not sure of this

  • @sohus rajamalik also reported clips longer then say more than 3min are not playing back for over then 80sec in camera, if you take some PROVEN COMBINATION also from driftwood settings say bitrates and buffer/frame limits combination in this case from Sedna A and INJECT into VY Canis M N you're able to play in cam also for people in trouble with sdcards

  • @obscura see wait for all the canis m,... wait until may 3rd,..i hope all of them will be online by 3rd of may,...then u do experiments,...but see any patch which is over 150mbit won't play back in camera if its longer than 80 sec,..i don't know act manual lenses,..but for auto lenses NO....

  • Maybe that´s a stupid question, but can two different GH2s be differently calibrated or diverge in terms of color temperature? I was testing one of the new settings of driftwood today. While my first GH2 (one year old) seems to have some warmth or yellowness to it, my second and brand new GH2 seems to produce a cooler, blueish image. Both cameras were tested with the same: lens, hack, settings, lighting conditions, white balance, sd card, battery.

  • @sir_danish yes this is possible if you didn't set your white balance properly.please set your new camera white balance to old camera,..change white balance for every different light condition. Use a pure white paper to set them well,..if you r shooting indoor and the lights are little yellowish you need to reduce the white balance below 4000 or even less to set it rite...white balance helps us in post production in hue color correction and sometimes in grading,..keep all u r cameras set well and the same ,..all the best!

  • @driftwood

Watch out! ...If this gets any better, I'm afraid Panny's gonna' have you arrested!

  • @rajamalik: Thanks for the advice! I always set the white balance before I hit the record button and today I used my white card for that. I will have to try it again, maybe it was my mistake (hopefully), rather than an imbalance between my cameras.

  • @bubba actually panny will recruit him as a technical advisor and will sure pay him atleast 450000$ a annum for the developement of gh3 cinema camera version

  • @rajamalik

    Ha Ha! the next BT!!!

  • @rajamalik @sir_danish If you are using any of the 4 custom WB slots, note that they will be reset when you flash the firmware.

@rajamalik Actually, it's not that simple. I have several clips where this was not the case (90 second clips which playback fine in camera recorded with Canis Majoris, etc.) but many of the Canis Majoris clips I recorded recently do not. So it's not a guaranteed thing.

  • I've been piddling with "Day" all day and to be honest, it's impressive. I have no idea how it behaves in 24P and I really don't care that much...but it smokes in 720-60

  • @peternap looks good. what lens? settings?

  • @luxis Nikkor 55mm 2.8 720p-60, shutter 1/125 f11, Vibrant -2 all.

  • Here are some comparison PNGs, including all 3 Canis Majoris settings so far.

The first is taken from a JPEG still, shot high quality at 1920x1080 using all the same settings as the video - not with an electronic shutter.

The second one is the green channel from the first, but with gamma and contrast boosts, saved to PNG.

All subsequent versions are PNGs extracted from the middle of 15 seconds clips, by exporting the frame from VirtualDub 1.10.1. They have all been processed similarly to the JPEG.

This test is designed for Intra settings. Other settings have been included for reference, but no effort was made to check whether the frame used was I, P or B.

Here are the shooting settings: Firmware 1.1, applied with PTool 3.65d; Smooth -2, -2, -2, -2; 24H, f1.7, 1/60, ISO 3200; Intelligent Resolution Off; Panasonic 20 mm f/1.7, no filters.

  • Canis Night for the win! ;-)

  • @Driftwood It handily outperforms everything but the original JPEG. Look at the outline of the black triangle in every single other setting.

EDIT: Alternately, here is an image comparison of CM Night vs Sedna AQ1 A vs Mysteron Burst vs Stock FW1.1.

    100 percent crop.

  • sedna aq1 a0000 is closer to reference jpeg than the others. best tonal resolution. thanks very much, comparsions show a lot...

  • @thepalalias Thanks very much for this impressive test.

  • @beavis Respectfully, I disagree. Maybe the original images for the 3 would be helpful?

Pay special attention to all the black areas. In many cases, there is detail that is apparent in the original JPEG, then less so in CM Night and still less so in Sedna AQ1 A.

Which area do you find Sedna AQ1 A showed superior tonal resolution in?

    @7pc Glad it was useful!

  • @thepalalias thanks, now in full colors it´s clear. CM Night rules. First in green it looked it has steeper jump to black level...
