  • An important preprint published on Dec. 2 pointed to immune escape. South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases has individualized data on all its 2.7 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the pandemic. From these, it identified 35,670 suspected reinfections. (Reinfection is defined as an individual testing positive for Covid-19 twice, at least 90 days apart.) Since mid-November, the daily number of reinfections in South Africa has jumped far faster than in any previous wave. In November, the hazard ratio was 2.39 for reinfection versus primary infection, meaning that recovered individuals were getting Covid at more than twice the rate of people who had never had Covid before.

  • May be people with weaker immune system are more probably to get infected? First, second or whatever time.

  • Interesting data, San Francisco:

    1. In 2020, there were 261 deaths from COVID in the city
    2. In 2021, there were 679 deaths from COVID in the city (as of December 14)
    3. In 2020, there were 711 overdose deaths in the city.
    4. For 2021 (period January-October), the city has accumulated 545 deaths from overdoses.
  • China and Omicron

Hong Kong residents returning from the United States are being forced to spend one week in a 'spartain' quarantine camp, after which they must serve out two weeks in a hotel room that they pay for themselves, according to the South China Morning Post.

The new measures which were announced on Friday come after the city's health authorities elevated the country to the highest Covid-19 risk level, prompted by one confirmed case of the Omicron variant in a traveler from the US - an asymptomatic 37-year-old man who had received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and traveled from Los Angeles on Dec. 7.

In a press release, the city said that those arriving from the US would be subject to the "most stringent quarantine and testing requirements," which would take effect on Monday.

  • God, its a miracle!

Scientists at the University of Hong Kong have discovered that the omicron strain SARS-CoV-2 multiplies in the human bronchi 70 times faster than the delta strain and the original Wuhan variant of the coronavirus. This property could explain why a new mutation in the virus is more easily transmitted between people than previous ones.

The chief infectious disease specialist of the United States, Anthony Fauci, called the omicron the most infectious variant of the coronavirus of all that have been recorded so far. According to him, the omicron strain most easily transmits COVID-19, and the number of cases of infection with this particular variant doubles on average every three days. “Omicron will very soon take on a dominant role. I suppose it will happen within a few weeks, ”he suggested.

COVID for now is most lucky ever mutating virus in history, if other viruses behaved even 10 times less... no living being could exit on planed Earth.

  • Omicron will be like.. flu

Our clinicians have studied the features of the course of the new coronavirus infection caused by the omicron strain. We see that the clinical picture of the omicron is dominated by such signs of acute respiratory viral infections as sore throat, low-grade fever, myalgia (muscle pain), - said Murashko at a meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. - The general symptoms of intoxication are very similar to the course of the flu.

    Superb.

  • Begs the larger question: If Omicron is essentially the "flu," why the gross overreaction and push to inoculate?

  • Those are political action.

Hopefully Omicron is a good thing and this is the last agony before truth is out.

  • @mitkoo

It is certainly not last, far from it.

  • Researchers tested blood samples from more than 160 patients hospitalized during the first and second waves of the pandemic. They measured the levels of 25 cytokines and chemokines - proteins in the blood that regulate the immune response. Scientists also estimated the level of 171 microRNAs, which reflects the degree of tissue damage by coronavirus.

It turned out that the combination of microRNA and proteins makes it possible to more accurately distinguish between severe cases of COVID-19 than measuring the levels of these factors separately. The chemokine CCL20, interleukins IL6 and IL10, and miR-451 microRNA were key indicators of the fatal outcome of coronavirus infection.

  • Yeah likely to last Nov 2024 at least. 3 years away.

  • China, new lockdowns

Since December 23, residents of the city of Xi'an, located in the central Chinese province of Shaanxi, have been living in a tough lockdown. From December 9 to 22, 143 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the city and another 63 cases - in the last day, which is a noticeable increase for Xi'an, where there were only a few cases before. According to reports in the Chinese media, we are talking about the spread of the "delta" strain. Cases of "omicron" have so far been identified only in a few cities in China and in a small number.

According to the terms of the lockdown, the residents of Xi'an - and there are about 13 million of them - should not leave their homes, except in cases where it is vital. Only once every two days, a family member is allowed to go to the nearest grocery store or pharmacy. Since the quarantine was announced unexpectedly for many, some families were divided: some were leaving to visit their relatives, some were visiting, and now they have to wait for the end of the lockdown to return home. The authorities have not yet indicated how long the restrictions will last.

The city is prohibited from operating cinemas, theaters and catering establishments. Mass events are prohibited. Schools are closed, classes are held online. Civil servants have been transferred to remote work, enterprises that are not related to the city's life support have been closed.

Residents are also prohibited from leaving the city itself without special need.

Entry into the city is also restricted.

  • Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills:

"I think all of our concern about [asymptomatic spread] has been going down based on what we've been seeing throughout the past several months," Sills told ESPN. "We've got our hands full with symptomatic people. Can I tell you tonight that there has never been a case when someone without symptoms passed it on to someone else? No, of course I can't say that. But what I can say to you is that I think it's a very, very tiny fraction of the overall problem, if it exists at all."

"Clearly if you want to look at the overall pattern and concern about transmission, it is not being driven by people who have no idea that they are infected and they are infecting scores of others. This is being driven by people with symptoms and the exposures during that symptomatic period."

  • Extremely interesting remark

The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova called the main difference between the omicron-strain of coronavirus from the previous ones. According to her, unlike previously encountered variants, mice and rats are infected with omicron.

  • Biobot Analytics, the Cambridge-based company that collects the wastewater data, said Thursday that “undercounting is now more substantial than ever.”

In fact, since early December, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority has had to quintuple the y-axis on their chart to capture the exponential spike, which now dwarfs the previous surges in the spring of 2020 and last winter.

    From released documents (February 2020).

Three days after the call, four participants authored a paper entitled "The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2," of which Fauci and Collins were sent drafts. The authors, who had previously expressed concern over a lab-leak and genetic manipulation, suddenly abandoned that theory to insist the new virus had a natural origin.

Bigger issue is that all major variants are 100% lab created. As number of coincidences in them is much bigger.

  • A carrier of the omicron strain of coronavirus can infect about a hundred people at a time m told immunologist-allergist Vladimir Bolibok.

According to him, omicron is the most contagious not only of all previous variants of COVID-19, but also of other diseases. Before that, measles was the most contagious disease, but a new mutation of the coronavirus has surpassed it, the doctor said.

In order to infect another person, a simple conversation or even yawning is enough. “If someone coughed or sneezed alone, then this number is enough for 100 people at once,” Bolibok said. The specialist warned that because of this, an “outrageous burden on healthcare” is possible, and therefore not all patients will be able to receive assistance.

  • The infectivity of "omicron" is six times higher than that of "delta". "Omicron" has more than 46 mutations in the spike protein, just in the place that is responsible for attaching the virus to the receptor, and this causes its fantastic contagiousness.

Is it possible that in nature each new virus variant has 6-10 times higher contagiousness compared to previous and around 98% of all mutations are extremely successful? Nope, I can tell you as guy who professionally wrote gene like algorithms and for years talked to professionals working with DNAs and genes in nature.

All other viruses, such as old corona viruses or flu viruses changed, of course, but efficiency of this changes had been tiny or even negative. And they had centuries of time and around 100000x more replications. But they did not have top capitalist weapon grade viruses labs behind them.

  • We failed

For ALMOST two years, we - the press and the population - have been almost hypnotically preoccupied with the authorities' daily corona virus news.

WE HAVE STARED at the oscillations of the number pendulum swings when it came to infected, hospitalized and died with corona. And we've got the meaning of the pendulum's smallest movements laid out by experts, politicians and authorities, who have constantly warned us about the dormant corona monster under our beds. A monster just waiting for us to fall asleep so it can strike in the gloom and darkness of the night.

THE CONSTANT mental alertness has worn off tremendously on all of us. That is why we - the press - must also take responsibility for our own efforts. And we have failed.

WE HAVE NOT been responsible enough to demand explanation what it actually means that people are hospitalized with corona and not because of corona. Because it makes a difference. A big difference. Exactly, the official hospitalization numbers have been shown to be 27 percent higher than the actual figure for how many there are in the hospital, simply because they have corona. We only know that now.

OF COURSE , it is first and foremost the authorities who are responsible for informing the population correctly, accurately and honestly. The figures for how many are sick and died of corona should, for obvious reasons, have been published long ago, so we got the clearest picture of the monster under the bed.

IN ALL , the messages of the authorities and politicians to the people in this historic crisis leave much to be desired. And therefore they lie as they have ridden when sections of the population lose confidence in them.

ANOTHER example: The vaccines are consistently referred to as our 'superweapon'. And our hospitals are called 'superhospitals'. Nevertheless, these super-hospitals are apparently maximally pressured, even though almost the entire population is armed with a super-weapon. Even children have been vaccinated on a huge scale, which has not been done in our neighboring countries.

IN OTHER WORDS, there is something here that does not deserve the term 'super'. Whether it's the vaccines, the hospitals, or a mixture of it all, is every man's bid. But at least the authorities' communication to the population in no way deserves the term 'super'. On the contrary.

  • Omicron spreading speed

In St. Petersburg, not just another rise in the wave of coronavirus is observed, the growth is colossal, Vice Governor Oleg Ergashev said at a press conference on January 19.

“If over the past weeks we have been sick from two to two and a half thousand people a day, then in the last three days a colossal increase in the incidence has been recorded. It can be called explosive, vertical,” Fontanka quotes Ergashev. “If yesterday we talked about weekly growth of 109%, today we are talking about an increase in the incidence of 147%.

The new strain of the virus has its colossal features. This is a strain that will hit in high numbers. If earlier we said that one person infects from 7 to 10 people, then with a new strain, their number will be in the tens, and may even reach hundreds of people," the Vice Governor summed up.

The total number of those vaccinated in our country is quite impressive: 3 million 14 thousand, which is 85% of the entire adult population. And 2 million 819 thousand have passed the full cycle. These are quite high figures, taking into account the number of vaccinated and the number of recoveries. Our collective immunity is 88% - according to the calculation method of Rospotrebnadzor. And according to the methodology of the Ministry of Health, even more - it approaches 100%," Ergashev said.

  • On Omicron mutations

    image

    https://doi.org/10.31219/osf.io/f7txy

The Venn diagram shows that the five most common variants of SARS-CoV-19 have only one common mutation in the S gene that distinguishes them from the reference (Wuhan) variant. And that Omicron is closest to the Alpha variant (6 common mutations). There are overlaps with other variants, but only one (Beta and Gamma) or two (Delta) identical mutations. With 26 unique mutations, such overlaps can be considered insignificant.

This alone is enough to state that we deal with lab produced variants pushed into population.
