  • While BRaw is still missing, I appreciate that they take on the flaws first.

    Some are reporting problems with ProRes, though.

    Some people I talked with tell that BM is afraid to release Braw for now due to legal issues with RED.
    I think that recent agreement with Atomos does not add optimism, same as secret agreement with Apple before it.
    RED is quickly becoming Rambus of camera world.

  • BRaw has been released on the Ursa Mini, just not added to the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K yet.

    Atomos agreement is fact, I heard about Apple agreement from multiple guys and everyone can see results.

    BM raw design is also obviously made much worse than it could be in attempt to go around the patents.

  • It makes sense if you compare the numbers of UM46P sold against the Pocket 4K. I'm sure we'll know after NAB, everybody will struggle to get results for that point in time.

  • Just received the eVtrans USB flash drive mentioned by Vitally in an earlier post, in the 256gb variant. Havng done a very quick test the drive was recognized by the camera, and formatted in both exfat and osx. In a very quick test I tried C4K lossless and it recorded the entire drive without dropping frames. The drive will need a usb 3 to c otg cable to use practically .The 256Gb card gave approx 18 mins record time. I will certainly be ordering more of these drives as much more convenient than the T5 should my initial drive survive testing. I don't know the longevity of the card or reliability until doing many more tests. Initial test was at 24fps 360 shutter angle. Certainly has the potential to be another external media solution thanks to Vitaliy

    Issue is size limits.

    Actually it is full SSD drive with nice USB-SATA 3.0 bridge. Plus 4 channel MLC memory.

    With USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure by idea they must be nice for fast copy to computer and cheap.

  • Vitaliy, I have actually already ordered one of those drives to try and am awaiting delivery. The usb drive works with the Bmpcc 4K and I can live with the capacity being limited to around 18 mins in c4k lossless and is a very cheap alternative to cfast2 media. I will do a few more tests but have already ordered another one as it will do for other purposes if all else fails. Tried on Bmpcc 4K C4K lossless 60/24fps drops frames after 6 seconds. I did however get around 18 mins at 3:1 so doubt there will be an issue in any flavour of prores. Now to find a suitable OTG cable so the drive can be mounted to the cage.

    March 5, 2019 - Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update which adds support for Blackmagic RAW to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

    Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update is available as a free download from the Blackmagic Design website.

    Blackmagic RAW, a revolutionary next generation codec that combines the quality and benefits of RAW with the ease of use, speed and file sizes of traditional video formats. Blackmagic RAW is a more intelligent format that gives customers stunning images, incredible performance, cross platform support and a free developer SDK.

    With Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update, customers using the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K now have the ability record images using Blackmagic RAW for the first time. This allows them to capture the highest possible quality images in smaller files, giving them much longer recording times with the media they already own. For example, customers can record over 2 hours of full cinematic quality Blackmagic RAW footage in 4K on a single 256GB SD UHS-II card. With Blackmagic RAW 12:1 you can even record 4K DCI images to an SD card, giving you stunning cinematic quality images on incredibly small, inexpensive cards. In addition, Blackmagic RAW gives customers an even faster, more fluid and higher quality editing and color correction workflow in DaVinci Resolve than ever before.

    Once the camera has been updated, customers can choose between 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1 constant bit-rate recording or between constant quality Q0 and Q5 recording. This lets them prioritize image quality or file size. The constant bit-rate encoding options give customers incredible images at predictable and consistent file sizes. Constant quality Q0 and Q5 use variable bitrate encoding so complex frames are encoded at higher data rates, preserving the maximum amount of detail and quality possible. Blackmagic Design Generation 4 Color Science is used for superior imaging that results in extremely accurate skin tones and gorgeous, lifelike colors. Blackmagic RAW images are encoded using a custom non-linear 12-bit space designed to provide the maximum amount of color data and dynamic range.

    In addition, Blackmagic RAW features extensive metadata support, highly optimized GPU and CPU accelerated processing on the desktop and more.

    Traditional RAW codecs have large file sizes and are processor intensive, making them hard to work with. Video file formats are faster, but suffer quality problems due to the use of 4:2:2 video filters that reduce color resolution. Blackmagic RAW solves these problems, giving customers the same quality, bit depth, dynamic range and controls as RAW, but with much better performance and smaller file sizes than most popular video codecs. Once files are brought into DaVinci Resolve, additional GPU and CPU acceleration make decoding of frames incredibly fast, so customers get extremely smooth performance for editing and grading.

    When the Blackmagic RAW settings are changed in DaVinci Resolve, a .sidecar file can be generated or updated if one already exists. When opened in other software applications that support Blackmagic RAW, the .sidecar file, which contains the Blackmagic RAW settings made in DaVinci Resolve, will be automatically used to display the image. If the .sidecar file is removed then the file will be displayed using the embedded metadata instead. This innovative new workflow gives customers a non-destructive way to change Blackmagic RAW settings while working between different applications.

    Blackmagic RAW is much more than a simple RAW container format. Its intelligent design actually understands the camera and the sensor. This means the image data, along with the unique characteristics of the image sensor, are encoded and saved into the Blackmagic RAW file, giving customers much better image quality, even at higher compression settings, as well as total control over features such as ISO, white balance, exposure, contrast, saturation and more.

    In addition, Blackmagic RAW uses Blackmagic Design Generation 4 Color Science for superior imaging that results in reproducing extremely accurate skin tones and gorgeous, lifelike colors that rival those of cameras costing tens of thousands of dollars more.     Blackmagic RAW features two types of file compression. Customers can choose either constant quality or constant bitrate encoding options, depending on the kind of work they are doing. This lets them prioritize image quality or file size. Constant quality uses variable bitrate encoding so complex frames are encoded at higher data rates to preserve detail and maintain the highest possible quality. Blackmagic RAW Q0 has minimum quantization and yields the highest quality, while Blackmagic RAW Q5 uses moderate quantization for more efficient encoding and a smaller file size. Blackmagic RAW 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1 use constant bitrate encoding to give customers the best possible images with predictable and consistent file sizes. The ratios are based on the unprocessed file size of a single frame from the camera’s sensor, making it easy to understand the relative amount of compression being used.

    The pristine camera native quality of Blackmagic RAW Q0 and 3:1 are perfect for effects heavy feature film and commercial work. Blackmagic RAW Q5 and 5:1 are extremely high quality making them great for episodic television and independent films. Blackmagic RAW 8:1 and 12:1 offer high quality and speed, making it suitable for productions that wouldn’t normally consider shooting RAW. Metadata is important because it contains the Blackmagic RAW settings along with information for the slate, iris, focus, focal length, white balance and a lot more. The metadata in .sidecar files can be used on top of the embedded metadata without overwriting it. Blackmagic RAW also supports frame based metadata so customers can access values, such as focus distance, that often change on a frame by frame basis.

  • It kinda seem like a revers universe. I always thought braw was the problem with license. Removing cdng from all cameras is a big surprise. I think braw is great, but cdng got its advantage. I guess it will be removed from davinci resolve in a future update. But when?

    So, after all I had been fully right at the day of Braw announcement.

    We yet to know agreement terms with Red who owns patent on compressed raw video (general one). It was due to them we had DNG raw stored in separate files to get around patent. Apple ProRes RAW became possible due to private agreement with Red - one of the terms had been sales of cameras on Apple site. Here we also have some private agreement no one talks about. And I am afraid we will soon can find consequences like some limits on how BM cameras can be designed or cartel price agreement.

    Let me repeat sequence of events again.

    Cinema DNG is bulletproof from RED patents, contrary to words in this video. As it is just really set of still images.

    RED who is quickly turning into new Rambus and slowly leaving camera market due to poor sales, of course, could go into litigation, but 100% result will be really bad, and this actually can mean huge blow for RED as their main asset now is horrid patent on raw video format (obvious thing).

    Thing that we have here is BlackMagic stopping offering ANY raw format and replacing it with pseudo raw intentionally called as raw. This is according to RED secret private agreement.

    RED idea is that it allows them to hold larger portion of market, as top end niche is quickly shrinking for them (due to Alexa and Sony improvements).

    And camera market overall more and more looks like cartels land and lands of parasites, even in case of BM that was always very features and engineer focused company.

  • Yup. BM is pressed for sure. You can tell in the video that Grant is extremely uncomfortable only talking about the subject. He knows it will make big noise. They just anonce a new camera with no raw... that’s crazy. cDNG is way better than braw when it comes to IQ and sharpens. I like braw, but it doesn’t replace cDNG. Huge blow under the belt.

    It also means that RED is going after anyone who will now try to do even DNG based video.

    They made few very dangerous moves with secret agreements with Apple, Atomos, BlackMagic and few others.

    Due to specifics of education and culture all this companies can't join and crush parasite, instead they all hope to make good agreement and that RED will stop. They won't.

    RED actually few years ago already become like huge cancer on camera market who stand as hurdle of progress despite in all its force trying to pretend that they are not.

  • I agree. RED loosing marked is not going to make it better. They’re fighting mentality will affect even more cameras and probably programs. I don’t see many stand up against them or even care to. In the end the users lose. Staying behind with Stone Age codec for no reason at all.

  • Depend on the ability to rollback later on I guess.. haven’t got confirmation on that yet. If you buy the new URSA pro g2 for almost 6k, than you only get prores and braw... and no dual iso.

    NAB 2021.

    BM announces that all its cameras will be mandatory updated with firmware that will record video only in MJPEG format with quality no higher that 50%. :-)
