Sony's new "all-in-one" FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS 10x zoom lens is an ideal travel partner handling everything from landscapes and everyday portraits to sports and action scenes with ease. Its huge 24-240mm range (10x zoom) makes this full-frame high magnification zoom is an ideal travel partner, covering focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto without the need to carry extra lenses.
The advanced design includes five aspherical elements and one ED glass element, contributing to the lens' excellent optical performance in a compact design. It features an advanced linear motor that drives the focusing mechanism for quick, smooth response throughout the extensive zoom range, as well as built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS) stabilization and dust and moisture resistance.
Video users might be attracted to this lens for its large zoom range, as it’s impossible to switch out lenses in between a shot, and the lens's image stabilization is a huge plus for shooting handheld. The lack of a constant aperture throughout the zoom range is a bit of a drag for video, as the exposure changes as you zoom, but thankfully it's a smooth transition, unlike other SLR zoom lenses I've used. Sony does not claim the FE 24-240mm is parafocal, the way the company does with the FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS, but in my rudimentary testing I can say that when I focused on something at the telephoto end and zoomed out, the focus did not shift noticeably, which is a big plus. The main drawbacks for video are the stiff zoom barrel, as well as the distortion, which is not as easily corrected for video users. Still, if you have to have a large zoom range and don't want to splurge for the Sony FE PZ 28-135 lens, then this is certainly a viable option.
I wonder how huge/expensive this would be if it were a constant f/2.8 parafocal?
In general, decently sharp. Better than I expected. This isn't going to be as sharp as a prime lens or even something like a 70-200mm but compared to similar lenses I feel Sony did a pretty good job on this lens. Like many lenses f/8 seems to be the sweet spot for center sharpness. At the center this lens is decently sharp at all focal lengths. The sides aren't bad either. Corners? Well, not great, but still better than I expected.

The FE 24-240mm is not the strongest optically and ranks in the lower half of our lens database. That said, the image quality delivered by the FE 24-240mm is good for a superzoom.
The Sony 24-240mm f3.5-6.3 FE lens is a great option for someone who travels a lot, but even then it’s biggest strength is its versatility. It’s sharp, but nowhere as sharp as the company’s primes. It’s got a decent size, but it’s also still one of the largest lenses for the FE mount.
