Yes, it's true. When you see the word "USB" you think you can plug all your USB cables into it. But you have to go to Dongle City...price of admission is probably $10-20 minimum per Dongle. Should be law...must keep at least 2 USB-3 ports per computer for another 3 years.

Note that it will be more cable nightmare soon, as USB 4.0 new USB-C connectors will have options for wiring and such. And may require new active chips also.
After this it seems like we will see full stop of progress, as Thunderbolt 3 is already extremely restricted and it is no progress in sight, as USB-C connector just have too few pairs, and most probably we will see new wide USB-C within 1-2 years.
