  • Blackmagic Pocket vs Digital Bolex - Audio Throwdown

  • @MikeLinn yeah, I recorded a trumpet player and some narration for my film with a Rode VMP (my own recording equipment was being used on another project, so I had to improvise) and the sound recorded into the D16 (with the preamps on) was so clean. I was impressed since it was the first time, after 1.5 years of having the camera, I've used it just for audio recording.

  • I feel like such a broken record, and I've filled the last 3 pages of this post with frames from my short film (here: http://goo.gl/WklpZl and here: http://goo.gl/qVLZbR), but I swear the trailer is coming soon (Anyone got kids and a 9-5?), as well as the film too. :

  • Interesting to see some of the latest vids on the Bolex line vis a vis audio. In December of 2013, following a video in which extolled the professional audio features of the Bolex, I asked a simple question, which was, does the Bolex actually output true, 48 volts phantom power under load. Still interested in the answer, if someone has one and can test it.

  • @DrDave here are some newest updates here: http://www.digitalbolex.com/post-nab-updates-firmware-lenses/ and there's another update coming with more features next month. If you want a more in-depth answer to your question, email Eddie Barton at his site at: https://iaremrsir.wordpress.com/author/iaremrsir/

anything you need answered, he'll provide tenfold. He's helped push the camera to it's limits and beyond. as well as working on it's color matrix. Great dude, and you'll be more than satisfied with his answers to your questions.

  • Just interested in having someone who actually has a camera, and is not affiliated with the company, to test the Phantom power.

  • He's not affiliated with the company. He's a user, like me, and he's a camera owner also; and probably more knowledgeable about the cam than the DB engineers. He'll answer whatever you have on your mind, for certain.

  • Really good stuff:

  • Thanks for posting all these videos, this is a great collection of really solid work. Some of these videos are the reason I'm getting DB, and will likely be shooting on that more than Blackmagic sadly. The image is just so good now... Like it's only been with in the last few months we've seen what this camera actually looks like, when it's corrected properly and shot well. Really had no idea DB can look this good.

  • @RomanLegion Thanks for watching them! I'll have my trailer up in a week, all shot on D16 (except slomo shot on GH4. 60p recording for the D16 will be in a future update), so hopefully you'll enjoy that video too. You can see view framegrabs from my film (shot on the D16) here:

It is a quirky camera, no doubt, and there's been issues, at times, these past 1.5 years that rattled me; but that image - and when you know how to work around the quirks - is something special; and DB has been rolling out solid Firmware updates every few months lately, which are quite fantastic, which helps reaffirm why I purchased this puppy. I recently received my MFT mount - Voigtlanders all day now;)

  • @lunalobo75 Sweet, looking forward to it! I have no doubt this will be a "fiddly" camera to say the least. I am fully prepared for that. I welcome it. It'll be interesting to get used to the quirks, and how to maximize its potential in any given situation. Will finally start lighting my scenes here instead of just getting away with bounce for the most part hah. I think it'll be fun. The image on this thing is absolutely worth working for imo.

  • Just got mine in. Jeeez this thing looks goofy haha. The image though is so freakin good. Can't believe how filmic it looks.

  • Unfortunately, after a handful of Digital Bolex user complaints in the last two months of SSDs dismounting, frozen cameras, and potential footage loss, we have discovered that these new monitors include a flaw in their signal that causes a major problem with the D16’s internal SSD drive that effects its ability to record and playback footage.

Well, I still wonder about depth of engineering genius in this cameras.

  • Yeah I don't know why the SmallHD 501/502 monitors would be causing such an issue on the D16? I haven't had a problem yet with mine, and as far as cameras go, it's been surprisingly solid. The first year of the BMCC was pretty bad, with a whole list of issues which were eventually fixed, but the D16 doesn't seem to suffer from most other common problems other small camera makers like RED / Blackmagic etc faced at first (black sun, IR pollution, moire / aliasing etc).

  • Well, here's my trailer for HALF KINGS. All footage besides slow-motion was shot with D16; slow motion, panny GH4. Enjoy:

  • Looks like DB team fixed the issue with the SmallHD 500 series: http://www.digitalbolex.com/statement-smallhd-500-series/
