    So you want to know what computer system to build?

    The haswell e has just come out. I would spend a grand on the processor. That gets you 16 threads 8 cores.

    Then a nice 2011-3 motherboard for 300-400.

    Some DDR4 ram - fill it up for 1500.

    A good power supply.

    Get a 7979 gpu. For the price they are plenty fast for video. Currently you can get them used for half price. About 200.

    SSD drive for system. They are getting cheaper all the time! Now less than 300.

    Then spend the rest in your wife. ;-)
