Seems that Auntie is losing her touch.
'BBC says "issues with sound levels" marred its adaptation of Jamaica Inn, with many viewers forced to turn on the subtitles.'
Too many funding cuts! Then again, " too dark and too much mumbling" is often used to describe the latest Hollywood movie!
I work in post production and there is a new sound spec filtering through...its called R128 spec. Its supposed to balance the overall audio throughout a program. -23dbfs is the target peak with a + or - of only 1dbfs. When doing a QC on some ch5 stuff that had been run through R128 hardware or software, i noticed the vocals were being overpowered by background SFX on some scenes and FAILED it. Dont know how this passed through BBC and Sub company QC departments..thats an instant QC FAIL.
Say hello to more complaints about unintelligible sound - concurrent with an ageing population, cost cutting and NSNI (New Staff, No Idea).

I listened to episode 2 last night, and it was a massive improvement. Personally, I don't think it was R128 issues, as the balance and relationship of things in the mix sounded good - the dialogue just sounded muffled on ep1.
