New Black Magic RAW Cameras: Pocket and S35 4k, general talk

  • I suspect that they have sorted out their supply somewhat, if not for the 4K cam, for the 1080p cam. They must be anticipating a high volume of orders for the 1080p cam right out of the gate with it priced so low, I can't imagine they would green light it without a fairly hefty manufacturing setup in place. The BMCC was their first ever camera, and they probably learned a lot first round.

    Maybe not . . . but I don't think they're idiots.

  • @B3Guy

You don't know all the things. May be they know that some big guy will announce external raw recording optionf for their cheap HDSLR cameras in next 2013 models.

  • Just completely insane. Unlike 3k for 3k I expect these guys will deliver, eventually.

  • Don't hold your breath Vitaliy.

  • If there's a DR trade, it's for Global Shutter

Yea, this sounds like it could be the case. I remember the original BMC2.5k sensor specs had a global shutter mode with a DR reduction of a stop or so. This new 4k model could be something like 13stops of DR with rolling shutter, or a "Global Shutter Mode" option with 11-12 stops for situations that might bennafit from the trade off. It would still be cool even if that was the case...

  • For ordinary guys like me, global shutter is more important than extra stop of DR.

  • LOL What's an extraordinary Russian like?

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev

    Of course I don't know.

But I'm with you all the way on global shutter. I've been trying to shoot some car/vehicle stuff this month . . . yuck. Rolling shutter really is frustrating in some situations.

  • I bet the BMCjello will be discounted soon. Seems like these guys are full of surprises.

  • @tinyrobot

It won't be discontinued, as whole prices thing show that they made entries on bottom and on top.

  • Is it too much to hope for a some original BMCC updates?

-Global shutter mode option with reduced DR (11-12 stops instead of 13)

    -60fps Prores

    -New price of $2000?

Probably not, but I'm calling it out anyways... :)

  • Someone please tell me there is 50fps 1080p or 2,5k

  • Original BMCC must go down in price.

Who's going to pay 3k$ if for 1k$ more you have 4K and S35 sensor?!

  • It seems that the 4K super 35 BMCC will come in m4/3 mount : http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/blackmagic_cinema_camera_4k_mft

Maybe it's an error on the website but let's hope !!

  • M4/3 mount diameter may be too narrow for 4K S35 sensor size. Might have to be Sony E-mount, FZ-mount, or other. If EF-mount only released first, grrrrrrr. I can't use my cine glass with an EF mount adapter, again...

  • It seems that the 4K super 35 BMCC will come in m4/3 mount

It is just speculation, m43 mount must not allow to proper lens mount without vignetting.

Or may be they plan to put Metabones stuff on it?

  • If there really is MFT version of 4KBMPC then I am sold. ( unless and unlikely Panasonic offers anything near in options or pricerange). Looks like my ship just headed to the Black Magic woodooland.

Should be interesting to see what others have to offer.

  • More infos here : http://www.newsshooter.com/2013/04/08/blackmagic-design-4k-super-35mm-cinema-camera-ready-to-pre-order/. It seems CVP says it'll come in EF mount and m4/3 mount. Strange.

  • @Trankilstef

It is not new info, some shops just like to jump on preorders :-)

  • @shian,

"Yup, that's what I'm saying. I'm saying fuck Canon and their stupid lenses. but you're right E mount or X would make more sense than EOS - except they still can't get past the fact that they seem to think Canon is competition - if you do this right - you make 2 versions - one for those idiotic Canon lenses, and another for the real filmmakers."

    LOL +10

yeah fcuk Canon lenses, i have always avoided them like the plague. Nikon is not far behind

  • LAS VEGAS, April 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- NAB 2013 -- Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, a beautifully designed, pocket sized digital cinema camera that includes powerful features such as Super 16mm sized 1080HD sensor, super wide 13 stops of dynamic range, built in SD card recorder for Apple ProRes, lossless compressed CinemaDNG RAW capture and active Micro Four Thirds lens mount, all in an attractive compact design for only US$995.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2013 booth at #SL218.

Since the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera was launched at NAB 2012, it has been celebrated by industry professionals for its amazing film look and accurate and cinematic color. The new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has most of the features of its bigger brother, including its feature film look, but has been redesigned with a dramatically smaller size that is less than an inch thick and can be held easily in your hand.

This compact design allows the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to be used in more situations where a larger camera would not be practical. It's so small that it can be used in situations in the field where a larger camera could be dangerous. The camera's film look even allows personal video to be shot with the style and creativity of a motion picture film!

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera features an industry standard Super 16 sensor size, so it's perfect when using Super 16 cine lenses via MFT adapters, as the shooting experience is the same as using the same lens on a Super 16 film camera. The 13 stops of dynamic range look of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is almost identical to shooting on a professional Super 16 film camera. The Micro Four Thirds lenses offer a wide range of low cost lenses with amazing image quality, and they are compatible with mount adapters such as PL mounts for large lens and professional motion picture film rigs.

One of the most important features of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is its super wide dynamic range of 13 stops, allowing feature film quality images. A common mistake in the television industry is the assumption that more resolution means higher quality. Most cameras, even ones with higher than HD resolution, can produce"video" looking images that suffer from highlight and black clipping that limits details. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera's wide dynamic range eliminates this problem and provides film quality with dramatically more detail retained in black and whites in the image. Once the shoot is complete, DaVinci Resolve Lite color correction software can be used to adjust images and take advantage of this extra range in the images.

To eliminate the damage that low bit depth and high compression video storage creates, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes a easy to use SD card recorder that allows the full sensor dynamic range to be recorded in professional ProRes 422 (HQ) format, as well as 12 bit Log RAW lossless compressed CinemaDNG format. These files can be read by high end video software as they are all open standard. In addition to the regular CinemaDNG RAW format, Blackmagic Design will also be implementing a QuickTime wrapper for the open standard CinemaDNG and companion codec, allowing the camera to record in a format that allows RAW editing in popular editing software.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has been designed as the perfect companion to editing software such as Final Cut Pro X and Avid Media Composer. Unlike other cameras, which require the use of custom video file formats, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes absolutely no custom video file formats, and every file type included is open standard.

The built in large LCD display makes focus easy, and allows playback of captured files. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes a built in microphone, as well as external jack based mic/line level balanced audio connections. When reviewing recorded clips, audio can be played through the built in speaker and routed through the headphone port or micro HDMI output. The HDMI output includes all camera data such as timecode, transport control, shutter angle, color temperature setting and ASA information overlaid in attractive anti aliased fonts.

"This is an extremely exciting camera and its been amazing to work on. Our original Blackmagic Cinema Camera was small, but this new model is so much smaller than the original, we almost cannot believe it features very similar image quality," said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. "We think customers are going to really enjoy this new model and use it both personally and professionally. It's going to allow shooting in situations that could never have been achieved at this quality level previously. It's also going to be the camera that thousands of new up and coming cinematographers use as their first camera for their independent films. It's going to be exciting!"

    Availability and Price

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is available in July for US$995 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide.

  • For me this is a kick between the nuts to Sony/Panasonic, they never have the courage to do something like this, although it was always my dream, a small camera with the best possible video quality and totally versatile.

  • So you get a S16 Sensor and a top frame rate of 30p on a pocket sized camera with 13 stops DR.

I still think the lack of higher frame rates i.e. 60p 1080 and or 720p 120 in this day and age is constrained.

It's a great interview and 24p camera in your pocket with 13 stops DR. Still to see what kind of low light and Rolling Shutter it exhibits, I expect it to be poor in low light compared to DSLRs and GH2,GH3.

Unless you need 13 stops, a GH2 or GH3 camera is already more versatile and has many more features like EX Tele mode.

  • Or take the 30 minute limitation off their pocket 1080p, the LX7 LOLOL...
