GH2 High Quality GOP3 Settings, Series 2: 'AN' Valkyrie, GOLGOP3-13, GOP3ZILLA, Duke, natural :-)

Because my English is poor, there may be many unclear things, but I do my best in some questions to answer enduringly.

[The common feature of my settings]

For example, if some setting tries to use low qp with the frame size limited like Intra, many level lines of the high qp macroblocks will also appear in each frame pictures. Although it is unclear for appearance in looking with eyes, it means that the codec is not committing this correctly. I am making the settings which can use the lowest possible qp appropriately, avoiding this isuue by using the biggest possible I-frames. On the high detailed scene, if the minimum qp is too low, the range of qp will spread and, as a result, many of these level lines of the high qp macroblocks will appear.

Therefore, in my settings, on the high detailed scene, it has adjusted so that the minimum qp may become high appropriately. On the other hand, it has adjusted so that the lowest possible qp can be positively used under the lowlight. I think that 3GOP can realize this all-round performance with the motion. Therefore, when using my settings as only for lowlight, you may feel thing insufficient only a few, although sufficient dark place performance is still given. However, also in a bright scene, the codec hardly wavers with my settings. This is the point that especially I am scrupulous.

And

My top priority is "recording does not stop by any means in any situations."

*The issue which the high bitrate hacked GH2 cannot often span more over 4GB is not contained in this.

In order to adjust so that recording may not stop in a high stress scene, you have to test supposing the stress beyond it. I have spent many hours also on the torture test for it.

*The purpose tested with this screen is the check of durability or reliability to the last. About image quality, it cannot check at all by this test.

I understand that this test exceeds the stress assumed practically. However, in the settings which cannot clear this test, the Risk of Freezing Camera momentarily practically is large.

Moreover, although the issue of "freezing the moment a focus suits" is recognized in many other GH2 settings, about it, it cannot necessarily solve only by this test. I have also solved this issue now by the test which repeats focusing for several minutes.

I aim at the setting not freezing.

If my settings may become unstable with SanDisk 95MB/s SDXC, please give me feedback.

*The spanning is possible perfectly in 24p with SanDisk 95MB/s SDXC.

These features are common in almost all my settings.

Valkyrie 444 'Apocalypse Now'

"Valkyries" are 3GOP settings in 'Apocalypse Now' series by @driftwood and @cbrandin. First of all, since it is only for 24p as Chris says, this 444 matrix cannot be used in principle in other Mode.

Then, I prepared 3+1 lineups, TYPE-ZERO1 , TYPE-ZERO2, TYPE-ZERO3 and Lite.

"TYPE-ZERO" means being based on the pure original matrix of Chris.

"TYPE-ZERO1" is the experimental series in which the pure matrix of Chris is applied to all the modes, without being corrected. In the modes other than 24p, artifacts often appears.

"TYPE-ZERO2" is the practical series to which the optimized matrix was applied in the modes other than 24p. About 24p, it is completely the same as TZ1.

"TYPE-ZERO3" is the more practical series to which the optimized matrix was applied in the modes other than 24p. About 24p, it is completely the same as TZ1 and TZ2. This series is the version as which "balance of gradation and resolving" was considered in all the modes. And spanning is used as the requisite element

"Lite" is the series in which the playback in a camera in all the modes is possible, and is somewhat economical in 24p.

*Since TYPE-ZERO and TYPE-ZERO1 will not be updated from now on, please use the newest TYPE-ZERO2, TYPE-ZERO3 or Lite.

GOLGOP3-13

"GOLGOP3-13" series is the settings for using low qp under lowlight positively. Simultaneously, it has tuned up so that a codec may work also in the high stress scenes as correctly as possible. The value of "Q13" to which I have stuck from last year realizes high image quality by practically lowest qp.

Furthermore, the original matrix is adopted in the newest GOLGOP3-13s. It is the middle of a Sedna matrix and a stock character. If I say plainly, it will be the Sedna matrix optimized in 3GOP structure.

"MAX" versions in each types are the settings using maximum I-frame size which GH2 can use in 24p mode. However, with MAX version, playback in camera may not often be available in 24p. This is because the maximum frame size which can be played back by GH2 may be exceeded. Of course, the file which cannot be played back in camera can also be satisfactorily played in PC. Supposing you consider that the playback in a camera is important, I will not recommend you this version.　Please use 'A' version. However, IQ of MAX version is better than 'A' versions in 24p, IMO.

"A" means "Almighty" or "All-around". Since former GOLGOP3-13s were not able to use the too much low base Q all around, "standard" and "lowlight" were prepared, but since latest GOLGOP3-13 controlled qp appropriately on all the scenes, it was taken as "A." Unlike "MAX", in this "A" edition, in-camera-playback can be available in all the modes also including 24p.

GOP3ZILLA

"GOP3ZILLA" series is the all-round settings which covers all the scenes with the mean bit rate. In a general shooting, this series realizes the highest image quality with the value of "Q15" to which I have stuck from last year.

This is the simple setting which harnessed the feature of the stock as it was. I recognize this to be the normal evolution version of the stock.

Also in this series, the in-camera-playback is available in all the modes.

Duke

"Duke" is a new setting based on the new concept, but it is in the structure high reliability at the same time.

If the character of Duke is denoted by a word, it may be said that it is "middle of the GOLGOP3-13 and GOP3ZILLA".

Or more simply, it will be the setting "which raised resolving of GOLGOP3-13 more."

I prepared the standard type and the Lite type also in Duke. In the Lite type, the frame size in which the playback in a camera is possible is used in all the modes also including 24p. In the standard type, in-camera playback is often impossible in 24p, but a higher image quality is achieved.

Hey @bkmcwd, just wanted to share some frame grabs from my film. Of course I've used some other tricks to contribute to the image but we ended up using cinema smooth and we filmed some fantastic images. As an early original Red One adopter, I have to say the gh2 hack image/usability it's miles ahead (of course with some post magic), but the end result is easier & better for web and 1080p delivery. It's been fun getting these weekly upgrades to test too. It's just like when Red was working out their firmware kinks when we started using Red for jobs some years ago. Great job and keep it going!

Here is my test of the Valkyrie 444 TYPE-ZERO2 Candidate1.5e. I didn't expect to edit anything as there were hardly any light in the different places I went and all is handheld, sorry for the shaky shaky. Thanks alot for your work, I will continue to donate, I feel like every month I buy a new camera thanks to your evolution of settings and it helps me a lot to improve my work.

My bad, it is GOLGOP3-13-A2_BETA4. I will test valkyrie TZ2 tonight... I am testing its stability right now and it seems to be fine in 24L but to stop in 24H after 4 min recording on sdhc 95m/s...

It simply cannot record further than 4 min 20-30 sec in 24i/s (both L and H). Always around the same time when I push record.

sdhc 95m/s...

I assume that it can be used satisfactorily on only "95 MB/s SDXC." Although I am imagining that it is the cause which you used on SDHC, I also check again.

@tusoli5 I also did the spanning test with SanDisk 95MB/s SDXC again. Although all stress was given and tested, about spanning, spanning was possible for any number of times satisfactorily at all.

24H of Valkyrie uses the highest bit rate in my settings. For the moment, if it is not 95MB/s SDXC, I cannot say that spanning is possible. Thanks. :-)
