My MacBook Pro can not handle files recorded with the Sedna AQ1 patch
  • Maybe this problem has been discussed (and solved) before but I could not find more specific information. Using a San Disk 32 GB 95 MB/s SD card I have recorded footage with the Sedna AQ1 patch. It plays back in the GH2 without a problem but on my MacBook Pro (V10.6.8, 2.8GHz, 4GB Memory) the files only show up as white document icons and can neither be opened with QuickTime Player nor with Final Cut Pro 7 (which quits if I try to import the .MTS files). I do not have this problem with the Sedna CQ20 footage where I am using the same GH2, the same San Disk card and the same MacBook Pro. Is it because the built in SD card reader of my MacBook Pro can not handle the Sedna AQ1 footage? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

  • VLC player usually does the trick...drop the footage onto your desktop before playing it...that's what i do with my Imac

  • first of all: if possible go for more RAM. 4GB ist not enough for any kind of work on graphics or video.

QT does not play .mts. VLC does but the data rate of SEDNA or MYSTERIUM is to high, it does not play well neither on my MacPro nor on my MBP i7 / 16GB RAM. Try mPlayerX which works on my hardware but imo image quality is worse. Anyhow it should be enough for fast footage review.

I convert my files immediately to ProRes HQ with 5DtoRGB. They are ready for editing and play well in QT an VLC too.

  • I have tried VLC player but when I try to open the .MTS file with the Sedna AQ1 footage the VLC player also quits

  • Are you using Panasonic’s AVCCAM importer plug-in? I’m using Sedna AQ1 as well, and not having this problem (I’m on 10.7.3, though).

If you have an older MBP with the card reader sitting on the USB bus, it’s very slow, so I suggest you move the AVCHD folder from the card onto your HD first.

I have tried VLC player but when I try to open the .MTS file with the Sedna AQ1 footage the VLC player also quits

In that case, try re-flashing your GH2 with Sedna AQ1 from scratch. Maybe there’s a setting that you changed inadvertently somewhere.

  • I have installed Panasonic's AVCCAM importer plug-in. Now I can see the footage in VCL, not in a great quality since it does not seem to play back all of the frames. After installing the AVCCAM importer plug-in Quick Time Player can no longer open any of the .MTS files, telling me "The document “Mirror test.MTS” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “data” format". Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 also could not handle the AVCCAM importer plug in.

  • VLC will frequently open a clip with high bitrate and then stop. If this is what is happening, drag the timeline marker back to the beginning after it stops, and it will play.

  • Thank you Mr_Moore and peaceonearth: the 5DtoRGB does the trick. The Sedna AQ1 footage looks wonderful. I am very impressed. Thank you all for your help.

After installing the AVCCAM importer plug-in Quick Time Player can no longer open any of the .MTS files

I think I know what the problem is. Are you using QuickTime Player X or QuickTime Player 7?

  • I am using Quick Time Player X

  • I forgot to mention (see @Mr_Moore above): don't try to play your footage from the card. Copy the entire folder to your Mac and then go for a review. If you want to screen your .mts before converting try mPlayerX. No high image quality but good enough for a quick review. As @CurtisMack mentioned VLC is running but due to high data rate you have to run your clip at a single blow. No stop and start play again, no tracking the play head to a specific point in your time line. Files with lower data rates e.g. SANITY play qwell with VLC.

  • @a_fulda

I am using Quick Time Player X

Ah, now that’s the problem. For QTP X you’ll additionally need to install Perian: http://perian.org

QTP 7 will open .MTS files with the ACVCAM importer alone.

  • Ok, I have installed Perian but the error message for Quick Time X is still the same ("The document “00001.MTS” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “data” format")

  • Did you relaunch QTP X after you installed Perian?

In any event, QuickTime Player 7 is your best bet here.

  • Are you copying the whole card file structure over. Ran into this problem with another mac user. Copy the whole shebang over because for some reason mac's need something in one (or more) of the files to recognize the MTS

  • For mac, I recommend getting mplayerx from the app store. It plays back high bit mts files pretty well, just not so great off the card.

  • Yes, @rockroadpix that's what I thought when reading this. VLC is A LOT slower and doesn't have an interface as good as the one MPlayerX uses. So there's no reason to recommend VLC over this one.

  • @rockroadpix as I wrote above ;-) I am not too happy with image quality compared to VLC.

Do you have any idea how to get rid of overlay of recording time? It's not concerned with OSD but I cannot find how to switch it off.

  • Switch off subtitles :)

  • thanks for the hint but "s" does not work. Any other idea? Thanks in advance.

  • @peaceonearth

Just switch Subtitle to Disable in menu. Done for me! :D

  • @alcomposer

thanks but I don't get that done. Maybe it's due to localized MacOS version?

  • Oh and make sure that you replay the video from the beginning... subtitles 'cue' in and thus don't switch off sometimes if it is reading a non-cueing text. So either close the media after switching subtitles off and reload- or play from beginning... YMMV

  • @Pechente

I agree, I hate the clunky interface of VLC.

  • Ok... MplayerX (new version) is fantastic... Fast, eats GH2VK for dinner... Nice.

  • VLC is only good for vintage innerweb porn. :^,
