  • I understand there was a picture of this thing, which has been removed. What's the form factor, does anyone know? More or less a cube (Z-cam like)? More like Canon with a side grip?

    The blurry lens part is to big for the the stated size in the leaked specs. It is about right for the bmmcc or bmmcc. Vitaly is this the image you saw on 43rumors before it was taken down.

  • those three BNCs must be minis to fit in 93 x93 x 78. This thing is a niche broadcast cam for multicam events.

  • @Sph1nxster yeah but if you're going for a small studio cam (no operator), why wouldn't you do a robotic PTZ setup? I could see the use case for events/concerts, but this has Genlock and TC, which is studio. There are no native broadcast m43 lenses (that I know of). Such an odd thing, this camera is.

  • Ptz is mostly what I install and help people to use. This paired with a olympus 40-150 is excellent for concerts, church, theatre etc. Reliable locked sdi connections and dc power. Blackmagic has the ursa line but it is too heavy. The micro series is bad in low light. If this can even do low light like a GH5 then this will be a winner

  • @Sph1nxster do you mean to say you genlock your sdi cameras at the church? Really.... Or do you just mean the physical connector :-) Again, I don't understand the combination of features on this camera. It has serious studio functions, but in a form factor not used in any large scale studio, and with no lenses to match studio use. It requires an operator, and not many will be willing to rig this instead of using a full size studio body. To witness, the smallest form factor to have Genlock and TC from Sony is/was the F3. Small studios would use PTZ cameras.

    Theater? yes, maybe. That's an actual use case to need genlock, where one frame delay from the mixer's TBC is one frame too many. Now, is this a big business? (crickets). I don't get it, but just because I don't understand doesn't mean Panasonic hasn't figured out a niche business case for the feature set and form factor.

  • Totally get what you mean. Budget is a huge consideration. Many churches want a multicamera feel but don't have the money to say buy 3 ursas. If you can get three of these bodies for the price of an ursa then this is already going to do well. Installations I am thinking of would of course have operators. Also gen lock not required, I just mean the physical locking connection. The amount of broken hdmi connections I have encountered is silly.

    I think Z-CAMs with ethernet used for connection is cheaper for multicam system.

  • @endotoxic u are 100.5% wrong. This camera has no bearing on the GH line, the codecs aren't there, the IBIS isn't there. GH5 could've be used unrigged in a pinch. This body is a mash-up of studio broadcast tech with the parts bin from S1 and GH5.

    Now, do I think I'd have a use for it? @ $2.5k I certainly would, but I live at the intersection of broadcast and videography, and I earn a living from broadcast. My use case would be "industrial" videos, not cinematography. I'd rig it to a pole, on a car mount, or a small crane. It would replace the GH2 I still use for those shots.

    For free-movement cinematography shots, this camera will require a gimbal (Moza Air 2) AND a monitor-recorder (Ninja V 4K with Prores RAW). Stationary shots will require full cinema rigging, but few DoPs see value in the m43 sensor size, they go for at least S35/APS-C, and rightly so. The use case of unobtrusive videography /documentary is lost with this camera body, no matter what.

    TL:DR not a successor to GH5, but useful for niche users already invested in m43 (lenses etc). (Larger) broadcast studios will have none of this, for a multitude of reasons. Smaller existing studios will consider it as a cheap upgrade path to 4K (update: I noticed SDI out is only 3G, so not even this upgrade path is posibile). Studio camera operators will complain about the lenses and focusing situation. Smaller multicam events will consider it too, if that market ever comes back when corona is done with us.

  • for 2.5g's you could rig an e2-m4 with the new evf, their eos speedbooster and grip . This camera is sounding like it's a pole cam or in a bullet time array....or buy an x-t4 or gh5 instead...w/lens. this is an institutional camera , made for institutions...who are the only ones , at the moment, with any liquid capital.
