Zhongyi Optics (ZY Optics) has unveiled the world’s lightest f/0.95 lens, Mitakon Speedmaster 25mm f/0.95 lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras.

This new member in the Mitakon Speedmaster family is a ultra-fast prime lens which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 50mm in the Micro Four Thirds system. A maximum aperture of f/0.95 makes it extremely convenient to shoot at a low light conditions without flash and . Most importantly, this lens weigh merely 0.51 pounds and 1.8 inches long. The compact size and fast aperture make it an ideal companion of your camera for everyday shooting in a wide variety of conditions.

Despite the extreme light weight, the lens incorporates a 11 elements in 9 groups optical design, including 1pc of Extra-low dispersion elements, 4 pcs of Extra-high Refractive Index elements and 2pcs of High Refractive index elements. This structure effectively controls the chromatic aberrations and deliver excellent image sharpness even at f/0.95. The lens also features a 11 pieces of aperture blades to form a close-to-circle aperture for a creamy depth of field. Optimized lens coatings also help to suppress lens flare and ghosting.

Manual focus design and a click-less, silent aperture ring promote smooth handling and are especially well-suited to video applications. The lens is built in metallic enclosure with additional protective process and finest finishing, which gives extra durability and aesthetic.

I suspect that all the elements here are made of plastic. They refer to the optical design as "elements", not glass, and the weight is half of the equivalent Voigtlander.

Plastic is OK for the right price, and $400 is certainly right, but people should be aware of this fact and not to expect the same optical performance 5-10 years down the line, especially if living in a hot and humid region, due to water vapor absorption of plastic elements.

They use terms usually applied to glass like high extra-low dispersion, extra-high refractive don't think plastic comes in those flavors. That being said there could very well be some plastic. Though when you think about it it's basically a 50mm with built in speed booster so does that have to be expensive? Only time will tell just how good this lens maybe.

Well, it is just bullshit. Such optical design descriptions exist for very big amount of lenses. Same is true about statement about weight.

The good news is that, at close range, the lens is already quite sharp at the center at f/0.95 and continues to grow sharper up until f/2.8 where it reaches its peak performance. The lens remains reasonably sharp up until f/8, at which point diffraction starts to set in. Corner sharpness is quite poor at all apertures except f/8, f/11 and f/16 but this is less of a concern for close-up work where out-of-focus edges can actually contribute to the artistic look of an image.

Wow! This is the lens I have been waiting for! Only thing I think is an issue, is the flare. It is way too present in my opinion.

This lens will not appeal to those who like to see high figures in reviews. It will appeal to those who see the lens as gelling with their particular style, be it portraits, dreamy landscapes or whatever creative use is seen for it. It handles very well indeed, and is a pleasure to use. It is easy to focus when the intention is to stop down afterwards, thus allowing the depth of field to cover any errors. It is hard to focus and hit the point required when used for shooting wide open.

Now, Mitakon has 25mm f0.95 and 42.5mm f1.2 lens for micro43. Would they complete the lineup with something wider? I certainly want to see Mitakon 17.5mm f0.95 added to their lineup. I might consider to buy one.

looks very nice. Could be a all around lens for video..And maybe would match well with Nikkor AI glass? So far anyone has this lens? maybe with a gh2? think I'll hold my gh2, and spend the money on this lens and wait till oly and pannasonic manage to make a proper hybrid camera. Do you guys think this lens would work on the BMPCC?

I did not have high expectations of the ZY Optics Mitakon Speedmaster 25mm f0.95. Such a small F/0.95 lens for such a reasonable price seemed to be too good to be true. However, the Mitakon positively surprised me
