The review camera handled high ISO settings surprisingly well when the smaller area of individual photosites is taken into account. In our night shots, little noise was visible up to ISO 3200 but thereafter edges became slightly softened as noise-reduction processing was applied.

the vid with the singing guy seems to be a "quality joke" :-)
The Canon 5Ds has a lot going for it. You’ve got tons of resolution, versatile files if you mind the highlights, lots of color depth, a beautiful viewfinder, pretty fast burst shooting rates, and a crop factor that is completely optional if you choose to get more reach from your lenses. On top of this, the camera’s autofocusing abilities are excellent.

While the 50.6 megapixel sensor is capable of delivering the highest image quality from any Canon EOS camera to date in terms of out-and-out resolution (slightly out-performing the 5DS), it does limit its versatility, with the 5fps burst shooting rate not proving fast enough for sports/action/wildlife photography, and the expanded ISO range of 50-12,800 limiting what the camera can do in more testing low-light situations.

Under the right conditions, the EOS 5Ds certainly delivers the goods, recording visibly greater detail than the EOS 5D Mark III. The differences understandably become smaller compared to its 36 and 42 Megapixel rivals, but the fact remains it captures the highest resolution images outside of the Medium Format world - and in those terms it's both more portable and a bargain.
All in all, the Canon 5DS R is beast of a camera...in a good way. The camera feels great, is built well, and stays true to Canon's familiar 5D Mark III design and control layout.

If you have the desire to take extremely high resolution images, then the Canon EOS 5DS R is one of the most affordable 50 megapixel cameras available. Whether you should purchase the 5DS R or the 5DS will mostly depend on how worried you are about potential moire problems. However, in our opinion, to get the best results, we would recommend going for the 5DS R, as the camera has the edge when it comes to producing sharp detailed images, something that is particularly useful for Canon EOS DSLRs, which traditionally tend to opt for a softer image (straight from the camera) when compared to other manufacturers. Thankfully the new Fine Detail mode and additional sharpening options have been added to improve results straight from the camera, as well as get the most from the high resolution sensor.

Canon EOS 5DS, $2799
Along with the huge 50.6-Megapixel images, the 5Ds has the ability to capture wonderful Full 1080p HD videos as well. Offering full automatic to full manual, you will find almost as many control options for video as still image capture. With the camera having a mirror inside, it must be set to the video capture mode in order to record. It cannot just start recording from any shooting mode like most ILCs. Our sample videos play back flawlessly on the camera, HDTV via HDMI and on a computer. This lets you watch them just about anywhere if you are prepared. The camera captures great color and detail throughout, leaving the sound from the onboard mic as the weak point. The same as any onboard mic, its small and sensitive to the sounds closest to the camera. An audio input is built into the camera to add more accurate and better sound. Unfortunately, Canon did not include 4K video capture, which is becoming more readily available on consumer cameras. This is a big missing feature on a camera that offers the best of everything else.

Whatever you think of the pixel wars, you can’t deny the technological prowess of the Canon EOS 5Ds. Its ability to capture such fine detail allows us to document the world better than ever before. At the same time, our ability to express ourselves through the art of photography continues to deepen. This camera is at the forefront of its area of photographic technology. Many shooters will find it beyond their current needs, but, as we’ve seen before, those same people may just end up with a 50MP camera a couple of years from now.
