Is the A7s 1080p really sharp? I'm watching a lot of videos but I always have the feeling they tend to be soft. Maybe it's just that people tend to use wider aperture on full frame. Note: I'm not trolling this thread, I'm just considering very seriously buying an A7s, and that would be quite an investment, plus I would have to sell some of my best m43 lenses ... so not easy decision :)
Maybe sharpness dialed out (in settings), as mentioned many shots are made with wide apertures - And for sure also because quite often adapted glass (also vintage one) is in use - And the vintage optics are normaly not as sharp as natvie / modern glass (especially wide open) =)

@flablo, I'm finding that usually my cheap plastic Sony 28-70 kit lens seems to be almost as sharp as my voigtlander 25 mm on my Gh2 with 2.8 aperture. I have sharpness dialed down to minimum in both cams. I have a feeling that the sharp look you are after can be achieved with a sharpening plugin.
Yeah i dial the sharpness all the way back. and it still looks sharp enough to me. No sharpness problems here. The 1080p is a downscaled in camera 4k output.
+1 on the kit lens. It's quite excellent.
Its very very sharp - trouble is a lot of people posting stuff online are heavily graining/filtering the original footage to get some hip 'retro' and /or 'filmic' look - even SOOC looks sharp enough for my eyes. Additionally - 120fps is only 720 so people are also blowing that up to 1080.
I'm interested in getting the A7s but i'm not sure what lens to get with it. I wanted to get the 24-70 for starters, but if you guys saying the 28-70 is actually really good then i might aswell get that one as it's much cheaper. Thoughts?
@albertdros If you do not need a modern zoom, I think you can try old legacy lens...even a cheap set of Minolta 28mm 2.8, 35mm f2 and 50mm f1.7 should be ok...I have seen reallt sharp video with the cheap canon fd 50mm 1,4 and this cam :)
For handheld video shooting, I strongly recommend getting one of the Sony zooms. Even the cheapest option, the 28-70, has very good stabilization. You can, for example, pan it or move up and down without issues. I can shoot without my shoulder rig and get very stable videos that require no post processing. I don't even think about taking a rig with me anymore.

Thanks for that link, Vitaliy – by far the most scientific approach I've seen about the real DR of such a camera!
As to the weird tones; this camera needs 10 bit. S-log simply needs it.
Sony omitted this from hdmi out (unfortunate...) To avoid strange green skin tones and banding, avoid s-log on a7s. This camera brings the dr stops, but not a professional solution.
@Sage do you have the camera? Use it much? I haven't seen any green skin tones (unlike with my GH2 all the time) and I shoot s-log all the time.
It is a much better camera than the GH2 (amazing hack aside). It falls short of ideal though; there is a dynamic quality missing when s-log is graded back to full contrast. While there is no green gain push of the GH2, the red saturation in skin takes a hit from the color crunching. The common s-log2 has been a problematic path. These are initial impressions; that said, I am sure with more work the camera can give great results. What are your settings/workflow?
