Consolidated Specs for Cinema Cameras with RAW

I went through the list of topics in Raw Cameras and did not see a list like this, so since I had been compiling some for the blog I posted today at http://www.pasadenapulse.net, I thought I would put them here so that others can add to it (and correct any errors that are statistically likely to have been added. :)

These cameras all have (or are slated to have soon) RAW recording capability in some form.

Max Horizontal Resolution

BMCC: 2.4K
Arri Alexa: 2.88K max horizontal resolution.
Sony FS-700: 4K expandable with 1.92K at release.
Sony F55: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2160).
Canon C500: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2960 RAW max).
Sony F65: Greater than 4K.*
Red One/Red One MX: 4.5K max horizontal resolution.
Red Scarlet: 5K max horizontal resolution (but 4K max horizontal resolution at 24/25/30P).
Red Epic: 5K max horizontal resolution.
Red Dragon: 6K max horizontal resolution. Unreleased.

*As for the Sony F65, I don't want to get into that can of worms. With it's 20MP sensor, let's just say "easily 4K, probably more in the future" but not get too far into it other than to say that the current recording format is 4K.

Cameras with Global Shutter

Sony F55

Max Framerates at 4K and Highest Resolution (with the color depth recorded)

BMCC: Cannot do 4K. Max 30P 12-bit log at 2.5K.
Arri Alexa: Cannot do 4K. Max 60P 12-bit log at 2.88K in 16x9 mode.
Red One MX: 30P 12-bit at both 4.5K and 4K.
Canon C500: 60P 10-bit at 4K.
Sony FS-700: Upcoming 60P at unspecified RAW bit-depth in 4K.
Sony F55: 60P 16-bit linear 4K.
Sony F65: 120P 16-bit linear 4K.
CMV12000: 90P 12-bit or 150P 10-bit at 4K.
Red Scarlet: 30P 16-bit at 4K. 12P at 5K.
Red Epic: 150P 16-bit at 4K. 120P 16-bit at 5K.
Red Dragon: Unknown 4K (expected to meet or exceed Red Epic at all framerates but guaranteed 120P at 5K). At least 85P 16-bit at 6K. Unreleased.

Native DR

Sony FS-700: Untested in RAW.
Red One (not MX): 11.3 stops official.
Canon C500: 12 stops official. (Though the highlight roll-off has been garnering praise)
BMCC: 13 stops official.
Red MX (as used in MX/Scarlet/Epic): 13.5 official. (Some sources measured at under 12 but I'm not invested in one measurement over the other).
Arri Alexa: 14 stops official.
Sony F55: 14 stops official.
Sony F65: 14 stops official.
Red Dragon: Over 15 stops official. Unreleased.

And of course, the Red Scarlet, Epic (and upcoming Dragon) support the HDRx mode that some people like and others do not, which is officially specified as increasing dynamic range to 18 stops (with a lot of caveats to go along with it).

Now… here is the new pricing:

5K EPIC-X Brain- $19,000

5K EPIC-X Monochrome Brain- $20,000

5K EPIC-M Brain- $24,000

5K/4K Scarlet Brain- $7,950

4.5K RED ONE M-X Battle Tested- $4000 (includes CF or SSD recording module). The RED ONE is End of Life. Battle tested is all that will be available from here on out.

Due to high anticipated volumes, plan on extended response and processing times.

Dragon sensor upgrade is not included for any EPIC system purchased at the new pricing going forward.

Tripod head that can handle both a dslr and a red one

Hi! I'm wondering if there exists an affordable fluid head that can handle the weight of a red one while still being able to properly balance a fairly lightweight dlsr rig (GH2 with rails and monitor). I know there are heads in the $3000+ price range that can do this, but that would blow my budget. I'm prepared to pay around $1500.

Red Scarlet versus GH2, any special requests?

Doing a week shooting with the scarlet with a bunch of gh2s. May have some time to do some side-by-side comparisons. If anyone has anything they are curious about, let me know and we'll see what we can do.

Driftwood Sedna q1 vs Red Epic 5k

Here's a comparison video between my friend's r3d EPIC and my gh2 with driftwood's sedna q1 hack. we're planning a feature and wondering if it'd b better to shoot on 3 gh2's or one EPIC.

first impressions were that the r3d footage made the gh2 footage look like I'd turned my contrast all the way up in the gh2 I couldn't believe how contrasty the gh2 footage looked in comparison. and I used smooth -2,-2,-2,-2

anyone have any experience using an ultra con filter to flatten the gh2 image?

also, noise @ 320 in the darks on the gh2 was pretty bad. about 2 times worse than the epic. maybe it was the iso bug we'll have to test again. or maybe i need to turn noise reduction up it was pretty much a dealbreaker as far as planning to use the current gh2 to make the feature

good news was sharpness was on par with the 5k image. In fact, I actually added sharpness to the epic footage to match the gh2.

is there anyway to flatten out the gh2 in the matrix?

UPDATE: turns out my friend's monitor was exaggerating the difference between the cameras. I color corrected, sharpened and denoised the clips to match each other. Check out the vid and let me know which u think is which:

They absolutely lift the bar when it comes to camera upgrades. 6K resolution, 15+ stops DR, 120FPS at 5K coming to Epic in 2012

You have to admit, nobody else treats their customers as well with this kind of brand loyalty.

GF2 Flicker Reduction Behavior

GF2 is a strange camera in Video mode. Panasonic say in their manual that Flicker Red (Flicker reduction) when set to 1/50 >1/120 in video mode will lock the shutter. I agree from the tests i have done in bright daylight that it does, however it appears SOMETHING is changing when large amounts of light or dark is introduced quickly, it seems to have a trigger point. If you use a manual lens, set aperture, use an ND or VariND and set iso to 100, it appears you can shoot and lock shutter between 1/50 and 1/120.

In dark situations where the camera needs gain, i think the iso will follow a similar pattern, jumping at trigger points, but shutter and iso will be locked at what you set it to unless you pan the camera to a very bright or very dark area, this seems to trigger some change but not enough to correct exposure. Weird. I throw this out there for discussion, as there seems to be conflicting opinions on this and no real explanations on what the camera is doing.

GH2 and Red Pro Zoom- Wich hack

Just bought a Red Pro Prime 17-50mm ( t2.9 ) and would love to know wich is the best hack to make 1080 24P at a great quality. I have a GH2, currently on the Quantum 5 Beta patch. I love it. Is there a patch that reunite 1080 24P, 720 60P and 2K at bitrates around 100Mbps and stable as hell ? . My card in the Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB at 95MB/s. I really want to exchange footage with with users on this great forum full of ressources.

GH2 with the 35-100mm Zuiko lens can deliver a slightly better image sharpness at 1080p resolution on every than Red EPIC.

Infrared modifications

I currently bought a small surveillance camera with 6mm lens, for 15 usd on ebay. i was surprised that it can film in almost complete darkness- and this is done by auto switching into the infrared light spectrum, BUT it does NOT have lights on it. It uses the Infrared spectrum of the normal street and house lights.
Does anyone have thoughts on this and- why this is not available on hdslrs as night shot mode?

GH2 red interlace issue? Or is it a premiere cs5 issue?

I've found out a very strange phenomenon with gh2 footage in (at least) premiere cs5. The reds look interlaced (jagged) while everything else is normal. Iv'e found that the same footage looks better in VLC aswell. I've of course matched the sequence to the footage and it has occurred with several different camera settings - it becomes obvious only with strong reds.

I wonder if someone else have encountered a similar problem and if you have any suggestions as to why it happens? (possible solutions?)

In this post scarlet world- where do the high level 5k+- cameras fit in?
Who is now interested in purchasing a Sony- Canon for 5k+- if for 9k you get RED? (forget about the new Canon 15k that was comedy relief).

Also - with GH2 being a prosumer camera (if not WTF is it really) what do Panny think will happen?
Semipros will even move up to RED (which will only get cheaper) and if your not a pro- you would buy that Pink Panny.

Point is - the mid range is endangered now with such high quality so close to the masses fingertips? (or am I totally nuts?)
The GH2 is endangered (and GH3) if Panny don't get REAL and unlock the potential of that sensor.

It's been almost two years since we first got a peek at the specs on RED's EPIC-X, and the 5K-shooting, is just now shipping out to customers. That's not terribly shocking considering the company's notoriously long development cycles and, if you ordered one, you should be too excited about getting a new toy to worry about how long it took to build. Lets just hope the first batch of folks to start capturing gorgeous footage with this thing!
