It is amazing. From wide angle to portrait closeup. Constant f/4 with constant light when zooming. Face and eye detection continous autofocus works great if the person moves slowly. And the best thing: zoom ring is super smooth and it is PARFOCAL!!! A fast zoom for action scene or a slow zoom for a poetic scene can be done.

I think there is no best alternative to it. The combination of a good enough f/4 constant aperture with a complete zoom range, smooth zoom, parfocal and good continous face/eye autofocus, in a small and lighweight lens is just perfect.

It is not a great low light alternative but fast prime lenses are made for this, and a 2.8 zoom will not improve low light so much.

You can ask about shallow dof. Yes there is some background blur in 45mm f/4, enough to priorize the person face, but not too much. Shallow dof is not the main purpose of a zoom lens. This lens is great for video zoom, face focus tracking, gimbal and slider use, all focal lenght needed.

Press release:

Owners of full-format and APS-C DSLR cameras have a problem and Olympus has created a camera to solve it – the OM-D E-M1, the new pinnacle of Olympus’ digital imaging range. A DSLR is often too bulky to carry, which is why the new OM-D E-M1 is more compact than its main rivals – and the ideal size for shooting on the go. It combines the portable dimensions of the Micro Four Thirds format with image quality that matches DSLRs. Thanks to a new Live MOS sensor and next-generation TruePic VII image processor, it delivers the best images in the history of Olympus cameras. The E-M1 trumps the autofocus performance of its OM-D predecessor with DUAL FAST AF – one of the world’s fastest AF systems – now available for sequential as well as regular stills. It has an electronic viewfinder with the magnifying power of a high-end, full-frame DSLR and the unique* 5-axis image stabilization system that made its OM-D debut on the E-M5. The E-M1 is splash-, dust- and freezeproof** and – thanks to DUAL FAST AF – compatible with an ever-growing range of interchangeable lenses. It is available for pre-order in black with a special offer, and in the shops with an additional offer for E-System users from mid-October 2013. Prices start at £1299.99 for the body only, £1499.99 (UK prices) for the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 12-50mm 1:3.5-6.3 lens kit and £1949.99 for a kit that includes the new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 12-40mm 1:2.8 lens.

Olympus’ fastest ever AF: Alongside the design specialists who gave the OM-D E-M1 its perfectly proportioned casing, Olympus clearly employs some of the world’s best autofocus engineers. E-M1 owners reap the rewards with Olympus’ fastest ever AF system. DUAL FAST AF delivers very quick autofocus performance with both Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds lenses, which can be mounted on the E-M1 using an adapter. The camera detects which sort of lens you are using and switches automatically to the more suitable AF technology – either phase detection or contrast AF. Four Thirds lenses work with phase detection, whereas Micro Four Thirds use Contrast AF. Both AF technologies can accurately focus on any one of 37 focus points to pick out, for example, a single stallion among stampeding horses, or on 81 target areas to automatically track the whole herd.

Olympus' best ever images: When a company with the optical pedigree of Olympus claims a new camera delivers the best image quality of any consumer model it has ever made, that device has a lot to live up to. The OM-D E-M1 more than matches expectations – and rebuffs DSLR sceptics – thanks not least to three key, complementary components. The Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds lens system (63 lenses and growing) combines with a new 16-Megapixel Live MOS sensor and the seventh generation of its powerful TruePic image processor series. TruePic VII uses New Fine Detail Technology II to get the very best still image quality out of every lens by adjusting processing in line with the type of lens attached and aperture setting.

Olympus'most powerful electronic viewfinder: Olympus gives creativity free reign and breaks new ground in electronic viewfinder design in the shape of a new EVF with fully 1.48x magnification, which is approximately 1.3x larger than a typical DSLR. In addition to high, 2,360,000-dot resolution, DUAL FAST AF and automatic backlight adjustment, the EVF scores over optical viewfinders with a new feature that is unique to the OM-D E-M1. HDR Preview Mode allows you to monitor HDR images in the EVF before you shoot and you can likewise experiment with four key settings before shutter release: aspect ratio, magnification, colour and highlight & shadow. The OM-D E-M1 also introduces a new way to adjust colour. Instead of graphs and numbers, the newly developed Colour Creator lets you intuitively play with colour by tweaking dials on top of the camera. You can check the result in real time on the Live View EVF. The time lag is a mouth-watering 29ms, which is too fast for the human eye and results in natural movement even with very fast-moving subjects***.

Olympus' most reliable camera ever: Olympus’ record-breaking Hybrid 5-axis Image Stabilization is exceptional because it compensates for movement around the axis of the lens as well as horizontal and vertical shift, and the usual yaw and pitch. This makes it noticeably easier to capture sharp, hand-held stills, especially at large zoom ratios. In fact, the Hybrid IS is so effective that you can record a shake-free Full HD movie literally on the run – even with long focal lengths – easily framing shots with the viewfinder or LCD in real time. Just as reassuring is the E-M1’s rigid magnesium body, as well as its dustproofing**, splashproofing** and freezeproofing**, which protects your investment with another Olympus world-beating system. The OM-D E-M1 is the best camera guaranteed to work perfectly in temperatures as low as -10°C*.

Olympus’ smartest ever WiFi integration: Among the E-M1’s many other strengths are built-in WiFi, which lets it communicate quickly and simply with a compatible smartphone. You can send selected images straight to websites and social media via your phone and effectively use it as a remote control to avoid touching the camera during long-exposure shots. Pairing is quick and easy via a QR code. You can mirror the Live View LCD on your phone’s touch screen, then focus and release the shutter remotely via WiFi (in P, A, S, M modes) directly on the display. Even the unique and spectacular Live Bulb effect can be previewed on your smartphone. Live Bulb updates the Live View image at pre-set intervals during bulb exposures.

Olympus’ most pro-friendly system camera: The OM-D E-M1 was designed in close collaboration with pro photographers who gave Olympus a wish list of ways to make cameras more ergonomic. With an eye on the fate of unwieldy DSLRs, re-assignable dials, switches and rings are big and beautifully laid out to ensure the camera sits comfortably in your hand and is easy to use. For example, you can adjust aperture and exposure using two dials on the back, then flick a lever to change the function of the dials and adjust ISO and white balance with the same movement.

Specs

Hobbyists, photo enthusiasts and professionals alike will be captivated by the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8mm f/1.8 PRO Fisheye lens' 180-degree diagonal angle of view. Like the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO, this lens includes dustproof and splashproof construction, for unlimited wide-angle adventure. The lens is also compatible with a custom dome port for use with an Olympus underwater housing.

The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8mm f/1.8 PRO Fisheye lens is constructed of 17 elements in 15 groups and can capture high resolution at the very edges of an image, even at the maximum aperture of f/1.8. ZERO Coating minimizes optical flares and ghosting. The lens also comes with a fixed lens hood and a pinch-style lens cap LC-62.

From under the sea to the night sky, the record-breaking new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8mm Fisheye 1:1.8 PRO is an unprecedented opportunity to add stand-out creativity and a uniquely dynamic and abstract look to extremely wide-angle shots of the natural world. Unprecedented, because – in this category – the Fisheye PRO is the world’s brightest fisheye lens*. The super-large aperture ensures photographers top-notch optical performance in any conditions, especially in low light. The 2.5-cm minimum focusing distance (measured from end of the lens) and maximum magnification of x0.2 make it a logical choice for nature photographers with a passion for quirky perspectives and eye-catching bokeh.

But the Fisheye PRO is also ideal for fast-action sports photography; landscape, nightscape and sky panoramas; as well as crowds, interiors or architecture. For underwater specialists, it likewise opens up exciting new opportunities – it’s compatible with a range of accessories via the new underwater lens port PPO-EP02.

Like the other lenses in the M.ZUIKO PRO family, it’s extremely compact and lightweight, especially compared to equivalent D-SLR rivals. The build quality is top notch. In pre-launch tests, professional photographers were quick to praise the blur-free performance of the Fisheye PRO at both ends of the f stop scale. Light fall-off at the edges is negligible, as are both chromatic and comatic aberrations, particularly when compared to equivalent rival lenses.

With 10.7x magnification, this versatile Micro Four Thirds® lens features incredible zoom capabilities in a compact, lightweight body. A dustproof, splashproof construction makes this lens durable enough to withstand the toughest shooting conditions when paired with the Olympus OM-D E-M1® or OM-D E-M5 Mark II®. With the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 II included, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL dustproof, splashproof lens lineup now offers five exceptional lenses for all of your professional shooting needs.

An improvement upon the M.Zuiko 14-150mm f4.0-5.6, released in June 2010, this new lens also features ZERO (ZUIKO Extra-low Reflection Optical) Coating on the surface of the lens to eliminate scratches as well as reduce ghosting and lens flare, even in very bright situations, for the clearest images.

Covering focal lengths from wide-angle to telephoto, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 II is perfect for capturing any type of scene, from portraiture to travel photography featuring a wide variety of subjects. The lens can capture subjects at all zoom ranges from a closest shooting distance of 20 inches (approx. 13 inches from the end of the lens). A maximum shooting magnification of 0.22x (35mm equivalent: 0.44x) is possible with close-up photography.

Smooth Controls

The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 II features an internal focusing system utilizing an MSC mechanism making high-speed, silent autofocus possible for seamless still-image and movie capture. Olympus Pen F https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14427/olympus-pen-f Wed, 13 Jan 2016 14:46:48 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 14427@/talks/discussions image

PR

Olympus is pleased to announce the PEN-F, a compact system camera created by fusing cutting-edge digital technology with craftsmanship handed down from 80 years of Olympus camera manufacturing. As the digital update of the original PEN-F, the world s first half-frame SLR, the new PEN-F is packed with incredible performance advancements for photographers seeking superior image quality and creative control. The 20 megapixel Live MOS Sensor is combined with Olympus 5-Axis Image Stabilization, a built-in 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, and a new Creative Dial on the front of the camera that accesses a host of controls to deliver a captivating shooting experience, all included in a design that exudes timeless beauty.

Elegant, Meticulous Design

The PEN-F s classic body lines and silhouette are inherited from its predecessor, which debuted in 1963. The top and front covers of the body are crafted from magnesium, and the precision metal dials (along with the bottom of the body) are crafted from aluminum. Olympus engineers devoted extraordinary resources to ensure superior quality and craftsmanship, so much so that even screws are undetectable on the camera s exterior. Simple, stylish touches like the included camera strap and the leather-grained exterior of the camera body and the back of the articulating LCD monitor provide a unified look and feel. Customizable buttons and dials are positioned for easy operation while the user looks through the viewfinder, and the new Exposure Compensation dial and four custom modes on the Mode Dial offer instant access to registered settings for simple, direct control.

Ultimate Image Quality in Every Situation

The newly-developed 20 megapixel Live MOS Sensor is paired with the latest TruePic VII Image Processor to bring out the amazing image quality of Olympus M.ZUIKO; lenses. The sensor s low-pass filterless construction delivers high resolution and a low sensitivity ISO LOW mode equivalent to ISO 80. In addition, the powerful 5-axis VCM (Voice Coil Motor) image stabilization compensates up to 5.0 steps* of shutter speed for one of the world s highest levels of compensation performance.

This technology allows users to capture clear images of night scenes and other low light situations with minimal noise, without raising the ISO. Focal length may be set manually, so that even legacy manual-focus lenses can be image-stabilized. The PENF s High Res Shot Mode captures 50 megapixel equivalent images that reproduce incredible subject detail in ultra-high resolution, perfect for architecture and still life work. Plus, Olympus Viewer 3 Ver. 2.0 image editing software has been updated to process High Res Shot RAW images.

Complete Freedom of Expression

The PEN-F s new Monochrome and Color Profile Control functions allow photographers the ability to emulate their favorite films of years past. These functions differ from using photo editing software after shooting, as they allow users to apply and check effects in Live View while shooting to create their own original images. Both functions include quick-select presets designed to give images the look of classic film. Or, settings can be completely customized to achieve specific looks. The camera has front mounted Creative Dial accesses Monochrome Profile Control, Color Profile Control, Art Filters, and Color Creator, all with a simple twist.

Monochrome Profile Control combines five photographic effects

Monochrome Profile Control combines five photographic effects Color Filter effect, Shading effect, Film Grain effect, Monochrome Color, and Highlight and Shadow Control for a variety of monochromatic expressions. In addition to the default setting (Preset 1), there is also Classic Film Monochrome (Preset 2) for a monochrome film effect with high contrast, and Classic Film Infrared (Preset 3) for an effect that mimics infrared film.

In Color Profile Control, users are able to adjust the color saturation of 12 individual colors in 11 steps. This is combined with Highlight and Shadow Control for limitless color expression. In addition to the default setting (Preset 1), there is also Chrome Film Rich Color (Preset 2), which provides deeper tones in images, and Chrome Film Vivid Saturation (Preset 3), which creates high levels of color saturation. The PEN-F s rear lever lets users easily toggle through the various effect controls, including Highlight and Shadow Control, a feature that also allows for the adjustment of midtones within plus or minus seven steps for advanced customization.

High-Visibility Interactive Viewfinder

The PEN-F is equipped with a built-in 2.36 million-dot high resolution OLED Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with a 100-percent field of view and a magnification rate of 1.23x (35mm equivalent: approx. 0.62x) for a clear view without aberrations, even at the edges. Simulated OVF (S-OVF) Mode expands the dynamic range and provides an image similar to what would be seen with the naked eye. The magnified display function and Focus Peaking (which offers three levels and four colors) allow for extremely precise lens focusing. In addition, the PEN-F s vari-angle, touch-enabled LCD monitor lets users compose Live View shots from a variety of angles, high or low.

Super-Fast Response for Comfortable Shooting

The PEN-F features blazing-fast speed with the shortest shutter-release time lag of any compact system camera** at 0.044 seconds. The 1/8000-second, high-speed mechanical shutter provides superior performance for capturing fast action, and shutter functions can be customized according to the scene. Silent Mode is useful for shooting in situations that require complete silence, and Anti-Shock Mode allows users to prevent shutter shake. The AF Targeting Pad enhances control by allowing users to set focus points by touching the rear monitor with their thumb while composing their shot in the viewfinder. Face Priority AF and Eye Priority AF detect and continuously adjust the focus on faces or eyes for easier portrait shooting. Enhancing the detail of every shot is AF Target Spot Metering, which links the AF Target and the metering area, while Super Spot AF and Small Target AF make it possible to focus on small subjects.

The PEN-F offers additional compatibility with users legacy lenses by enabling them to register the information of lenses without electronic contacts for inclusion in images EXIF data. The lens information may be recalled with the press of a button. Up to 10 lenses can be registered, including the lens name, focal length and aperture value.

Even More Creative Control

Other creative features include Live Composite Modewhich allows users to extract and composite the brightest areas from multiple, sequentially shot images to capture incredible cityscapes and star trails. With the PEN-F s built-in Wi-Fi@reg;, users can utilize the Olympus Image Share app for Android@reg; and Apple@reg; to adjust settings and monitor the progress of the image as it develops in real time on a smartphone or tablet. In 4K Time Lapse Movie, the camera captures up to 999 images automatically at intervals ranging from one image every second to one image every 24 hours, and combines them into a stunning high-resolution 4K video, all in-camera, without the need for additional software.

For those who enjoy macro photography, Focus Bracketing captures multiple shots at the touch of a button, all with slightly different focus depths. The new Live View Boost 2 makes it possible to easily focus and compose shots while checking visible stars in Live View. The PEN-F s high-speed sequential shooting capabilities let users capture all the action at 10 fps with the mechanical shutter, 5 fps with C-AF, and an extraordinary 20 fps with Silent Mode.

U.S. Pricing and Availability

The PEN-F will be available in early March, for an estimated street price of $1,199.99 (U.S.) and $1,499.99 (Canada).

Olympus adds to its powerfully simple and growing PEN family with the first fully-compatible interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lens to incorporate an electronic motorized zoom. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ (35mm equivalent 24–100mm) delivers smooth, quiet zooming that gives you versatility, portability and maximizes the performance of the Olympus PEN® compact system cameras.

The sophisticated new lens has a zoom ratio of approximately 4.2x, allowing photographers to capture anything from detailed, wide-angle group shots to medium telephoto-range images so you can get up close and personal for intimate portraits of children and pets – even indoors. The photographer can control the zooming speed by turning the barrel – slowly for drama, quickly for performance, or at an intermediate rate. Manual zooming is also available for those looking to take full control.

In macro mode, which can be set by pushing the zoom ring forward while depressing the macro button on the side of the lens, focusing is possible between 8 and 20 inches for close-up shooting with a maximum image magnification of 0.72X (35mm camera equivalent). The L-Fn (Lens Function) button suspends the autofocusing operation temporarily to avoid unintended focusing on obstacles that appear suddenly between the camera and the subject.

Perfect for brilliant still images and high-definition (HD) video capture, the Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ has also been enhanced with a linear motor that drives smooth and quiet autofocusing for stress-free shooting.

New lens elements and glass materials ensure the clearest possible imaging performance, and the proven dust and splashproof mechanism originally featured in the Four Thirds SHG (Super High Grade) series lenses is now incorporated for the first time in a Micro Four Thirds System lens. Multiple sealing rings, fitted throughout the lens body, prevent water splashes and dust from penetrating, making the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ a versatile zoom lens for the toughest conditions.

Super telephoto lenses are right at home in harsh environments. The M.Zuiko 300mm f4.0 IS PRO lens keeps dust and moisture at bay with an astonishing 11 separate hermetic seals so you don't have to worry about the weather when you're tracking an elusive osprey or photographing a rainy soccer match. It's nimble, maneuverable and easy to carry.

The Highest Resolution in Olympus History

The M.Zuiko 300mm f4.0 IS PRO's cutting edge internal lens architecture virtually eliminates peripheral chromatic abberation and color bleed while ghosts and flares are minimized by nano-technology lens coating, delivering the highest resolution in Olympus' storied history of innovation in optical glass.

Sync IS

The in-lens stabilization works in perfect harmony with the 5-Axis Image stabilization of OM-D cameras to deliver 6 shutter steps of performance, ensuring crisp, clear telephoto images, even off tripod. Explore unique angles like low to the ground macros and overhead nature shots

Fast, High-Precision Autofocus

Smooth coordination between a camera's autofocus and image stabilization is especially important when shooting with long focal lengths. The powerful 5-Axis Sync IS ensures harmonious operation between the in-body and in-lens stabilization units for focusing times of under 400 milliseconds.

Impressive Construction

Three difficult-to-fabricate Super ED lenses, 1 Extra-High Refractive Index lens and 3 High Refractive Index lenses are lavishly combined to produce excellent resolution and a compact size. Advanced design techniques and manufacturing technologies result in these high-precision, large diameter fine-polished lens elements that offer excellent image quality.

Extreme Portability

Weighing in at a mere 27lbs (1,270g), the M.Zuiko 300mm f4.0 IS PRO is a fraction of the size of comparable 600mm DSLR lenses. It's so small and light that it can easily fit in your carry on luggage or hiking backpack.

Lens Function Button

A dedicated Lens Function button on the lens barrel can be programmed to any of 27 different functions such as Focus Lock, Test Picture and Preview, allowing for quick changes on the fly without diving into the camera menus.

Silent Telephoto Shooting

In combination with the completely silent OM-D electronic shutter, super telephoto images can be taken in areas that can not tolerate camera noises like a concert performance.

1.4x Teleconverter MC-14

Enhance the versatility of the M.Zuiko 300mm f4.0 IS PRO lens with the addition of the 1.4x teleconverter for an impressive maximum focal length of 840mm (35mm equivalent). Weather sealing is maintained with the teleconverter.

7-14mm Panasonic or 9-18mm Olympus https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5238/7-14mm-panasonic-or-9-18mm-olympus- Mon, 19 Nov 2012 08:00:37 +0000 chocobanana 5238@/talks/discussions Hi there,

I'm really interested in a rectilinear Ultra Wide Angle lens for my GH2 but can't decide between these two. I intend to do video and long exposures with it in all conditions (including bright daylight), that's why I'm interested in the ability to fit filters. On the other hand, the idea of going for a wide angle lens is to get that massive perspective, I'm really fond of it for architectural shots.

These two lens seem to be those that offer the widest rectilinear perspectives for the M4/3. I'm not interested in a fish-eye because I would like to shoot 1080p/i without loosing quality after de-fishing. If you aren't already familiar with these two lenses, I would sum up the plus and cons that really matter to me like so:

Panasonic 7-14mm (+ widest reach) (- can't fit filters)

Olympus 9-18mm (+ can fit filters) (- doesn't go as wide)

Price, constant aperture, small quality differences don't really matter to me.

In summary, as far as it goes in terms of what matters to me, what one has the other doesn't. That's why it's so hard to choose for me. Yes, I already researched this comparison thoroughly but never saw it applied particularly to video. Perhaps someone here faced the same dillema and managed to make a decision or could provide a recommendation based on something I'm unable to see here.
