Vivitar Variable ND Test https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6727/vivitar-variable-nd-test Wed, 17 Apr 2013 15:10:14 +0000 DailyFilmFix 6727@/talks/discussions Here's a test I did today with the Vivitar NDX variable filter. I have been in post on my latest doc, "Three Days at Foster," and I've been working overtime on color correction. I used this particular filter on my Zuiko 45mm because the filter was for 37mm thread. I knew there were concerns about color cast and loss of sharpness, but a lot of what I shot was lovely anyway. The rest, I'm fixing.

So, for this test, which is probably not well done, I set up my GH1 with the reliability hack and set it to smooth with everything -2. I manually white balanced on the white door with each test after I set exposure. I pulled focus using a loupe.

To my eye, the one with the filter on it and the extra LED light does look, perhaps, a little less sharp. When I sharpened, it became a little more clear that there may be a slight loss of sharpness. But you guys look at it and tell me if my eyes need to be reset.

I ran three cameras on my doc (two GH1s and an HMC150) and was able to find an angle every time that worked. But I did not properly pay attention to color on some shots and tried to dial it in. After this test, I'm going to manually do it moving forward. Actually, I did manually balance with my video camera (the HMC150) on each interview, which did make a difference.

My main question is: now that Light Craft has a 37mm variable ND available at Adorama, based on this test, how much better would it be?

Finally, I realize that the casting and focus issues would become more pronounced as I cranked the ND down (darker), however, mine was set in the middle of the scale on the side of the filter, which I thought would be good for this test.

Fader ND filters, cheap ones https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/477/-fader-nd-filters-cheap-ones Sun, 24 Jul 2011 06:51:10 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 477@/talks/discussions
Pros : One filter to rule them all, fast adjustment.
Cons : Color cast on some models, cross figure could appear on high ND values, resolution loss.

Most usable sizes of Fader NDs - 77mm and 82mm.
Buy metal conversion rings for each of your lenses.
It is good idea to have them all converted to 77mm or 82mm.

Also note diameters, as filters with higher cost have larger outer diameter usually.

Adapting 4x5 filters to 4x4 matte box https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6215/adapting-4x5-filters-to-4x4-matte-box Fri, 22 Feb 2013 12:21:49 +0000 bibiana 6215@/talks/discussions I am sorry if this is a retarded question, but i have not been able to find a clear answer to this.

I have a 4x4 matte box (2 rotating holders), and i am trying to get some Formatt graded ND filters for a landscape shoot in sunny California desert. I am thinking they will come in handy. They don't make them in 4x4, only 4x5 so that you can adjust where the horizon line falls. Makes sense. But, how do i make these fit my 4x4 holder? The adjustable 4x5 holders are too thick to put in a matte box.

B&H has Cavision 4x5.65" matte box holders for $56 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/627071-REG/Cavision_MBH4X5_65H_MBH4X5_65H_4x5_65_Metal.html) and Redrock dual 4x4 / 4x5.65 holder (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/672534-REG/Redrock_Micro_4_002_0003_microMatteBox_4x4_4x5_65.html). Would either of these work? What about that extra 0.65" on the long side, will the filter fall through?

Any other ideas/solutions? Circular filters won't work, i have too may lenses with varying diameters, even as small as 22mm.

Via: http://cinescopophilia.com/fujinon-nd-p01-optical-variable-nd-filter/

Text is quite bumpy, but main idea is that bu turning two gradient wheels in opposite direction you can get even ND from 90% transparancy up to 1/64 original light only.

And no cross and color shift issues associated with reverse poliriser filters. :-)

Heliopan Vario ND Lens Hood Solutions? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3769/heliopan-vario-nd-lens-hood-solutions Tue, 03 Jul 2012 15:24:37 +0000 pundit 3769@/talks/discussions After being less than happy with the loss of sharpness of my LCW Fader ND I just purchased a Heliopan Vario ND 77mm filter from B&H and a 77mm lens hood. I have a very cheap and crappy matte box (junk) and was in two minds whether to buy a proper matte box or go with the Heliopan Vario and a lens hood in order to keep things more compact.

In the end I decided to go with the Heliopan... (a decision I think I'm now regretting especially considering the price!)

Upon receiving it I discovered the Heliopan has no front filter thread. (The LCW Fader ND does) What annoys me is one of the reviews of the Heliopan Vario on the B&H website refers to the Heliopan having front threads... THEY DON'T!!

Short of a new matte box does anyone have any solution for fitting a hood to a Heliopan Vario or am I just dreaming? If I can't find a solution I will contact B&H and point out the misleading review concerning front threads and send it back to them.

Filters for video https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5368/filters-for-video Mon, 03 Dec 2012 12:50:33 +0000 Supaduparafael 5368@/talks/discussions Hi guys,

I'm a newbie (those dreaded words!)

I've recently got a GH2 and mainly use it for filming. I'm now looking to get some filters for it (polarising and variable ND) purely for video.

Initially I thought I'd just buy screw in filters, namely the digital ones from Hoya but it quickly dawned on me that that would be an expensive option as it would mean individual filters for each lens due to the different thread sizes on each of them, also I have one which doesn't take filters ( the Panasonic 7-14mm wide zoom).

I then thought that a good option would be slot in filters such as the Cookin variety, as a cheaper option to the screw in type. Also with the slot in filters I would be able to filter the Panasonic 7-14mm? However these filters I understand are made of resin (plastic) so would I be right in thinking that they would not be ideal for filming, not as good as glass screw in filters?

I'm confused to say the least!

I'm contemplating just buying uv filters for all lenses (for protection) and getting a polariser and variable nd one screw in just for my main lens ( the panasonic 14-140mm).

I'm just imagining myself on a sunny day and wanting to reach for 7-14mm panasonic but then thinking "Gee wizz Batman, I can't polarise or use an nd on this" colours could turn out washed out due to reflections, I guess the nd issue could be resolved by stopping down the aperture as I wouldn't get a shallow depth of field on this lens anyhow :-P

I understand a lens as wide as this just isnt possible to have a thread (vignetting issues, protruding lens,) so do I guess the best thing i can do is just stop down on sunny days but no solution for the polarisation?

Thanks

Rafael

ND Filters and Lens/Filter Flares Clarification https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3453/nd-filters-and-lensfilter-flares-clarification Sat, 02 Jun 2012 13:56:24 +0000 B3Guy 3453@/talks/discussions Hey, all. I'm not entirely clear on how an ND filter changes the amount of flare in a lens system. (i.e. how much lens flare do you get with an ND in front of the lens versus with an ND in the camera body).

Also, how an ND changes flare from a flare filter (star, streak, etc.) i.e. would and ND in front of a flare filter reduce the amount of flare from the filter just the same as if the ND was behind the filter, or would the flare filter flare more with the ND behind it?

Perhaps some more experienced DPs could clear all this up for me, Thanks.

Always learning-

For Sale: Canon FD Prime & Zoom Lens Package w/ ND Filter Set - Complete & Color Matched https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2148/for-sale-canon-fd-prime-zoom-lens-package-w-nd-filter-set-complete-color-matched Mon, 30 Jan 2012 19:26:12 +0000 cowpunk52 2148@/talks/discussions I'm selling a complete set of Canon FD Prime Lens + 1 constant aperture zoom with a screw-on ND filter set. I spent several months putting this lens set together, making sure all the samples matched as closely as possible with no visible color shift between them. This is a perfect budget manual focus lens package to go with a GH2, AF100, FS100 or NEX camera. The glass is pristine and they all function flawlessly. Each lens is also already geared with zip tie focus gears and are ready for follow-focus attachment and operation.

I just finished shooting a feature film with these lenses on a GH2 with the Quantum 9b settings created by @driftwood and the images came out f-ing amazing. This is a truly beautiful set of very high quality glass. However, I'm purchasing a C300 package now, and these will not be adaptable to that camera... so they must go, sadly. I hand-picked each of these lenses, and love them all. I'm 100% certain you will, too!

The lenses are as follows:

20mm f2.8 FDn

28mm f2 FDn

35mm f2 FDn

50mm f1.4 SSC

85mm f1.8 SSC

135mm f2 FDn

35-105mm f3.5 FDn

The ND filter set includes:

Tiffen 72mm ND 0.6

Tiffen 72mm ND 0.9

Tiffen 72mm ND 1.2

Tiffen 62mm ND 1.2

B+W 62mm ND 1.8

Step-Up Rings: 52-72, 55-72, 52-62, 55-62, 46-52

I'll sell the complete package for $1500, including shipping to CONUS. Payment is made by Paypal as a gift, or purchase payment with fees added. I would prefer not to separate, but if you want just one or two items, send me a PM with an offer.

I also have a Novoflex m4/3 to Canon FD adapter that I will add for an additional $100 if you want it.

Complete package will be shipped in a foam cut-out hard case. Two filter slings are included for the ND set.

I am accumulating as many things as possible that I need from USA, since I get to save on the freight charges.

I would appreciate your help on things I need for using the Rokinon (this is mainly for the video) on GH1 and some suggestion on other gears.

Here is my list

1. Rokinon 85mm 1.4 for Canon (going Canon as I have plans to buy some Canon FD lens, however no Canon lenses with me yet)
2. Which canon adapter would you recommend? Will the EF mount be able to take FD lens? Or you need a separate FD adapter as well?
3. Need a Vari-ND filter. How many stops will be needed if I need to use 1.4 in daylight on ISO 100 at 50 fps? Is Fader ND from Lightcrafts a good buy? Is 77mm future proof?
4. Would like to buy some FD macro lens. Any suggestions? This is also for video mainly. Any other FD lens that would be a nice addition?
5. What is the secret behind the cost of the Novoflex FD adapter?
6. Is there any focus help available for the Rokinon on a GH1?
7. Any budget follow focus with rods etc? This is not a priority, but I just might get one.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
