But, in fact, there are positive attributes to many of the devices targeted here as losers and failures. Case in point:

I have shot dozens of 8K videos and 120p 4K videos using the "overheating failure" Canon R5 with no overheating stopping my shoots, over many hours (short takes only, of course - there are limits due to heat). In Summer heat. And I can make 8K videos from 12bit 8K RAW clips from the R5 using an 8GB MacBook AIR M1 (the "slow and low core") computer and DaVinci Resolve Studio, with no problems. 8K 12bit RAW clips or 8K 10bit HEVC 422 clips.

Now, I am not claiming that an 8GB MacBook AIR is the best for multi-cam, noise-reduction and stabilized in post video-making, but it works better than my gaming computers for specifically the R5 clips - which have among the most challenging (for higher quality) specs.

There seems to be a preference for flowers here, so this is an 8K example from 8K RAW edited on the 8GB M1 AIR:

And a 120 4K video:

And an HDR video (shot in 8K and rendered in 5K):

Yes, no 30-minute interview videos in 8K, and yes, probably an 8GB M1 portable computer is not for cinema producers.

Searching for a new camera companion https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13638/searching-for-a-new-camera-companion Tue, 01 Sep 2015 06:51:26 +0000 kolinko 13638@/talks/discussions hi everybody!

I've been following various posts for some days regarding research for a new camera for my video works after having used the canon sx200 for several years to shoot video. For my last work (degree show video at art school) I borrowed a gh1 and I quite liked it, but only due to the existence of this enormous lively community which enriches video life to such a high degree! thanks for that girls and guys!! For the work with the hacked (using mostly 100Mbps Max Latitude Settings V2) gh1 I bought myself two voigtlander noctron prime lenses, one 42.5mm (equiv. 85mm) and one 17.5mm (equiv. 35mm) which I quite enjoyed. I also used a photo tripod, one LED extra light and the great sound device t702 with a great 20 yrs old neumann mic from my school. I search for a camera that works well with these two micro4/3 prime lenses.

I now think about getting either the nx500, gh2/3/4(?), nx1, maximum 1000 EUR. But then I still want to have a lot of extra equipment like for sound, tripod, monitoring and so on. By the way is it possible to use a Mac-Book Air as a live monitor with any of these? I have absolutely no experience and I feel a little bit overwhelmed with all that extra research/equipment, trying to figure out everything here at the forum. Getting a lot of extra gear slowly is wanted, I want to grow up using more and more specific equipment for monitoring, recording sound, follow focus...

For my approach to video/cinema I never worked for money (except for one apprenticeship) so far, my personal projects are non-funded projects and I do operate everything myself (sound, video, editing, even standing in front of the camera) so far. I’d like to shoot either still or handheld mostly, considering the possibility to buy a rig or something similar one day. I’m not so much the studio and big team guy until now...

Since I'm so unsure about what I need maybe I should for the start just go for the gh1 body only costing me 240EUR?

The fact that panasonic goes to three years of guarantee (gh3/4) sounds tempting to me as well. I guess I'm too unsure/experimental and too easy to manipulate.

Thanks in advance! kolinko

FS MacBook Pro Retina 2.7Ghz 16GB 512GB SSD GeForce 650m 1GB + 128GB Hyperdrive https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13078/fs-macbook-pro-retina-2.7ghz-16gb-512gb-ssd-geforce-650m-1gb-128gb-hyperdrive Sat, 30 May 2015 05:15:39 +0000 thougts2uk 13078@/talks/discussions Hi Guys,

I am selling my fully loaded MacBook Pro Retina. It has all the updates available at the time I purchased it such as fast processor (2.7GHz turbo boost to 3,7GHz), 16GB Ram and 512 SSD. It comes boxed as new with all the original packaging. It is in perfect working order and looks brand new. Since the day I bought it it has had a rubberized case on, a Moshi keyboard protector, Moshi trackpad protector and Moshi palm rest protector on. I can leave these on for you or remove them. I bought the laptop in Korea so as well as the normal western alphabet there is also the bonus of korean symbols on.

It works flawlessly with video production or graphic design. I run Davinci Resolve on it and also the whole Adobe Creative Cloud as well as FCPx.

I am only selling because I recently upgraded to an iMac 5k so I have no need for a laptop anymore.

I am also throwing in a Hyperdrive with 128gb micro sd card. This fits in the SD card slot flush and provides additional 128gb storage. perfect for documents or storing movies on leaving the SSD available for more intense applications.

I am selling for 1400GBP. I will post via Hong Kong Post or DHL via express and trackable method with insurance.

Email me directly if you have any further questions. (stuart.howe@gmail.com)

Detailed Spec:

Retina Display 15.4" (2880x1800) i7 2.7Ghz (Turbo Boost to 3.7Ghz) 16GB of 1600Mhz DDR memory 512GB SSD Intel HD Graphics Nvidia Geforce GT 650m with 1GB DDR5 memory 720p FaceTime HD Camera

Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite quicktime player and GH4 footage https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11609/mac-os-10.10-yosemite-quicktime-player-and-gh4-footage Tue, 21 Oct 2014 14:44:32 +0000 nobbystylus 11609@/talks/discussions Wow. Just installed Yosemite and opened up a bit of DCI 4K .MOV GH4 footage, which was previously totally unplayable on my MacBook Pro in Quicktime Player (used to have to open premiere to playback at all), and now plays absolutely perfectly in the latest version of quicktime player. This is a big bonus for viewing and checking out rushes when you don't want to open up FCP or Premiere pro and enables quick and dirty edits.

Great news!

2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card (epic) failure https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9739/2011-macbook-pro-and-discrete-graphics-card-epic-failure Fri, 28 Feb 2014 17:42:39 +0000 luxis 9739@/talks/discussions Wondering if anybody here has been through the 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card failure which is becoming more and more common and yet Apple inc are ignoring the issue. I was finishing a multicam project in Premiere CS6 and Premiere kept giving me errors and shutting down. Eventually the mac froze while in full screen preview in premier and I had to do a hard reset. after this the "saga" has begun...I could not even log in to the os. After checking HD, Putting back original ram,etc,etc...Everything else is fine but found out that is the Radeon that is the issue(not that card is bad but its the apple design that is plain wrong or quality control has been sedated before they release this model in a rush). After manually removing the radeon kexts I am back on line using just the motherboard intel HD3000 512mb. This emergency recovery effort came with a price of severe blue tint and lower resolution altogether plus the screen is at full intensity and it is not possible to adjust any of this, at least in the usual GUI way. Slowness is also an somehow issue(not severe as others report after the kexts fix)since I have 16gb of ram and strangely enough I can finish my project in premier without hiccups now!?! Since the computer runs on the default Intel HD 3000 video card why do I still have issues video/monitor. 512mb should be plenty to run things at a decent level meaning normal color profile etc. Not like before but c'mon the bare minimum should be covered! Any solutions/suggestions/ideas(like custom kexts, command lines, etc.) to resolve the issue will be greatly appreciated!

Here are some links to the issue(s):

AppleInsider:

"The problem, as highlighted by multiple threads on Apple’s Support Communities forum, first presents itself as a graphical glitch — or, in more serious cases, complete system lockup — when an affected MacBook Pro switches from the integrated Intel graphics chip to the discrete AMD graphics processing unit, or GPU. Reports of the issue first cropped up in February, but have become more frequent over the past month."

Also the second GPU is only available for the top model starting at 2600€? They economized DVD drive and FireWire Port without lowering the price. No more DYI RAM upgrade and only 512GB or 1 TB SSD. Only as direct order when you buy the MBP. Bummer.

GH2 to Macbook for live monitoring - wired options? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7209/gh2-to-macbook-for-live-monitoring-wired-options Mon, 10 Jun 2013 11:11:04 +0000 Social 7209@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I've been looking around for info on how to use my new 2013 macbook pro to show live video primarily, and images if possible, that are being recorded/photographed live from my GH2... essentially using my Macbook as a monitor.

There is a thread on PV that is a couple of years old which I have posted to, but through I'd open this up as a new topic as well, as I'm sure there are people out there in GH2 land who could do with this info as well. Here's a link to the original topic: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1207/gh2-live-streaming-solutions/p1

I'm hoping that in the 2 years since the original thread, the tech options have moved on. My macbook has thunderbolt, which, from experience connecting macbook to tv, works well with hdmi, and as thunderbolt connectivity can be used to transfer data from a hard drive back and forth, it must be a 2 way connection, so theoretically should allow for possible hdmi data being inputed to my mac.

I am relatively new to this and am trying to gather information, as this forum has been so informative in the past, I wanted to ask you guys what you would do in my situation? I would appreciate cheaper options if possible, primarily wired options as from scouring the web, there are issues with data signal interruptions and signal distance on wireless options.... plus wired is, I expect, considerably cheaper!

Can you help?

Thanks, Rob

No problems at all. But now suddenly my boot disc died. My local shop, who are repairing this, told me that this second hard drive is not a good thing to have in a MBP, because this second hard drive never goes into sleep mode and would damage the computer in long terms... Anybody heard about this, do you have experiences about this?

Editing FCPX on an old/cheap Macbook https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6848/editing-fcpx-on-an-oldcheap-macbook- Tue, 30 Apr 2013 01:01:46 +0000 gameb 6848@/talks/discussions I will be shooting and editing a documentary in Central America in a place where a few things could happen to my equipment (kind of "risky" area).

So I thought, I buy a cheap old Macbbook take it with me also for viewing, put all the footage on a lower quality and do an offline editing (original footage will be shot on GH2 and be sent to a "safer place").

Anybody has experience down to which Macbook and OSX, FCPX still works, RAM etc?

External HDD (or SSD) for Premiere CS6 and Lightroom https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6582/external-hdd-or-ssd-for-premiere-cs6-and-lightroom- Tue, 02 Apr 2013 15:36:15 +0000 atticusd 6582@/talks/discussions Hi guys!

I'm looking for a new external harddrive. For some months I've been editing on Premiere CS6 using a Macbook Pro non Retina (you probably know the drill: i7 2.6 8Gb Ram and 750 Gb HDD). The footage is in 2.5" USB 3.0 Western Digital HDDs which I know is a suboptimal solution but I normally have all the HD footage (mostly GOP1 and GOP3 from a hacked GH2) on one track and playback is smooth 90% of the time. Since things are not always going to be that simple and Lightroom (which I also use profusely) would certain benefit from a faster harddrive I'm thinking about buying one. Caldigit has some solutions that are expensive but seem sturdy and reliable. I have my eyes on the AV Pro wich they sell on HDD and SDD flavors with USB3.0 and optional Firewire. They claim that with the UASP USB 3.0 protocol the SDD option can reach speeds of 430 Mb/s on new Macbook Pros and 200 Mb/s for the HDD option. There are a couple of reviews around the web that seem to confirm that. Normally manufacturer's speed claims are not reliable at all, so one can't never be sure. But, if we were to trust their speed claims, these are my questions:

Do you think that the SSD option is overkill for my current setup? Should I be better spending the premium on more storage? (The 4TB HDD option costs more or less the same as the 256 SSD one.)

Here's the product page:

http://www.caldigit.com/avpro/

By the way, I live in Berlin so the fact that Caldigit has a European Store is a plus (the dreaded customs and whatnot). That's why I ignored some other nice options out there. Of course if you know of other offers here in Europe, they will be more than welcome!

Thanks!

anyone recomend me a way to improve my macbook pro for editing https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6517/anyone-recomend-me-a-way-to-improve-my-macbook-pro-for-editing Wed, 27 Mar 2013 11:34:04 +0000 jakepowell 6517@/talks/discussions hi, was wondering if anyone could recommend me some equipment and computer parts (external graphics cards etc) in order to speed up my current editing system. im afraid im a student so spending loads on equipment is a no go, (do not tell me i need a new £5000 desktop etc as this is not practical for me) i want to add bits bit by bit as i can afford them to improve my system gradually .

i currently own a macbook pro 15" 2011 edition with: 2.2ghz i7 , 4gb 1333 ddr3 ram , AMD radeon 6750m 512mb graphics card, 500GB TOSHIBA MK5065GSXF sata hard drive.

how can i speed this system up? i am looking at getting 16gb of ram (which this series of macbook pro accepts) and a solid state hard drive of some sort with fast read write speeds i presume?

is there anything i can do on the graphics card front to speed up programs like premier , speed grade, after effects and davinci resolve lite? (i know i cant change mine as its solderd in but can i plug an external one into my system?

also my max resolution on this screen is 1440x900 - not large enough for davinci can someone tell me if there is a way to get an external moniter running from my macbook with high enough resolution to work on davinci? how do i do this?

im running lion 10.7.5 by the way.

ps sorry vitally i know this thread is a bit of a mess , but i simply do not understand computers enough to be able to find the information i need.

thanks in advance everyone

Issue with Macbook Pro 13 2011/SD Card https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6161/issue-with-macbook-pro-13-2011sd-card Sun, 17 Feb 2013 16:33:50 +0000 Hakosuka 6161@/talks/discussions Hi I done a search but couldn't find anything related to my problem.

When using my Sandisk 64GB 95Mbps card and Macbook Pro I get error code 36 when trying to copy MTS files to the desktop. It's very temperamental and I haven't been able to fix it. It works fine if I use a USB card reader. The only issue is when I'm using OS X and the in built reader. Ironically the in built reader works fine when I boot into a Windows bootcamp so I believe the problem lies within OS X. Has anyone else got the same combination and have the same issue? I also get this issue with the 8GB version of this card. I've tried formatting both within camera and software.

The only way I'm able to really copy files from my card is to keep taking it out and putting it back in until it eventually copies over completely.
