So I thought: would it be possible to combine best of both worlds? Would it be possible to have LED lights which also work as a Fresnel lights? Then I found out that this is the newest cutting edge thing that ARRI offers in it’s L-series, and LightPanels is releasing its own early models too, and they cost tens of thousands of dollars!

I wonder if I can make it DIY?

After all it shouldn’t be that difficult. I thought of getting a 312ASZ led panel (which, correct me if I'm wrong should give me a 250W equivalent) and sticking one of those plastic Fresnel lenses that old people use to read newspapers. But then the question becomes, are these good enough Fresnel lenses for purposes of cinematic lighting? And how to make it so that the lens moves back and forth, so as to focus the light?

What do you think? Any advices? Any suggestions? Any links to such DIY tutorials?

I backed this Kickstarter project. At a minimum I was happy to get a lightweight portable second screen for my laptop on the cheap. But I'm wondering if it could be used as a field video monitor. It has HDMI input. I am guessing the power would need converted to run on a battery in the field. I sponsored at the level of $135 which gave me the option of 13, 15 or 17 inch. I was thinking of I were to use it mounted to a camera rig the 13" would be nice.

Any opinions?

I need 3 backdrops: green (for chroma key), black and white.

For this I already have 3-roller background paper support system (similar to this http://www.ebay.com/itm/400373022462 ).

The background paper will be about 2m wide. Haven't found any place where to get this custom size though. Any ideas?

I will put this in between cheap man's Manfrotto Autopoles: http://www.biltema.fi/fi/Rakentaminen/Vari-ja-Saumaus/Tyokalut/Kattotuki-86034/ . That's the best version in Finland, in US I guess it's this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000067S12/ref=asc_df_B000067S122575981 . Reason for "autopole" is that I don't want to drill extra holes to the wall and the "autopole" provides attachment point for lights etc.

Hope them will be enough. This way I would not have any extra tripods on the floor for the green screen lights.

Office parks and convenience stores across the country rely on fluorescent lights. These flickering gas-filled tubes suck down far less energy than the incandescent bulbs they replaced but still consume some 200 terawatts of electricity every year. This new super-efficient LED prototype from Philips, however, puts florescents to shame.

It's a matter of lighting efficiency—how much light, measured in lumen, you can squeeze out of every watt of electricity consumed. Incandescent bulbs pull a paltry 15 lumen per watt on average, fluorescent bulbs produce maybe 100 lumen per watt. The prototype Tube LED (TLED) from Philips—200 lumen per watt. That's not only double what a flourescent can do, it's nearly double what existing LEDs, like the Philips T8, can achieve as well.

Vitec Group Plc’s Litepanels unit won its bid to block U.S. imports of lighting for television and movie studios made overseas by competitors.

The competing lighting modules infringe two Litepanels patents and should be barred from entering the country, the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington said in a notice today on its website. The decision can be overturned by President Barack Obama on public policy grounds.

It seems to be the big brother of the popular 312. It came with a nice bag with two layers of padding; accessories go in the bottom and are held in by elastic straps, then a padding lay closes over them. Put the light in and another padded layer protects it. It also came with to np750 style batteries and dual charger, like the 312, as well as mains cables and a nice mini ballhead:

So far, the only negative is the extremely thin diffuser. It might be thicker than a business card, but just barely. The Z96's diffuser makes this look like tracing paper. Plus the darn thing does not fit in the bag. Seems like it was an after thought. I'll have to find something to replace the thing with:

I haven't done any real testing with it. It is a little blue, but could easily be gelled. A custom diffuser would make that easier.

I'm looking for a box with one USB connection to a computer (which software?) and several DMX outputs to hook up the lights. I know you can daisy chain the lights, but to have 2 or 3 output sockets would still be of an advantage.

In fact, I think that Wi-Fi must be mandatory for led or fluo modern lights.

@Vitaliy_Kiselev I had a look at aliexpress, but I didn't find a DMX controller for my DN2. The DN2 has a 5 pin connector, all controllers do seem to only have 3 pin connectors (looks like XLR plugs to me).

Any information or experience reports with DMX controllers are appreciated.

But I notice that the 508 costs more than two of the 312AS. So I'm wondering if putting together two 312s will give you the same or more power than one 508? I am currently searching for an affordable lighting set-up as I'm going to do more interview stuff etc. in future.

The only thing I am sure about is that i want softboxes as light-modifiers, but what kind of light sources should I use? There are so much options. Halogen - Fluorescent - HMI - LED... As far as I am concerned, LED is the new trend in terms of lighting, but whats the reason for? Low energy, portable? Do I need a softbox in use with a LED for example?

I have a budget of approximately 100-350USD.

Interview with charlie Collias of Zylight about their new LED fresnel. I think what's really noteworthy about this new unit is that it really seems to be an effective workhorse fresnel, but it's not a big bulky housing- it accordions down to a pretty low profile in full flood for packing and moving. The accordion design struck me as both innovative and intelligent. This unit also has a nice hard-edged shadow on the beam; it gets away from the mushy multi-shadow thing that is such a hallmark of LEDs. Remote controllable, daylight balanced, battery-powerable, this light looks like it may rise above the new pack of LED fresnels. An associate of mine at B&H was predicting this one to be a big seller once it's in wide release. Downsides? Regular tungsten fresnels are still pretty cheap to buy and rent. Until Electricity and replacement bulb prices rise up a whole lot more, I don't think there will be a wholesale adoption of this unit by the general rental house market. It's a little pricey still compared to tungsten, about 2400$ for a unit that compares outputwise to a 650w fresnel. Being daylight balanced, though, it compares favorably to the small HMIs on the market, especially when you take the replacement bulb costs into account. Overall, I think this light will be a winner for smaller productions where the production company or DP owns a lot of the gear themself. It's portability and versatility appealed to me for that market.
