GH2 or GH3 for green screen?

Hi, I own a GH2 and a GH3, quite happy with both. I'm going to shoot videoclip on green screen. I already have some experience with GH2 and green screen, and I've already searched and followed all related discussion here on PV (and outside), but one thing I couldn't come up with a decision is basically wether using the GH2 (hacked) or the GH3. What appeals me of the GH3 is essentially the improved DR, while for the GH2 the main factor would be using a hack (Driftwood or CM Green Screen). I would not use the horrid All-I with the GH3. I'm not asking tips on green screen, I just want to know it anyone used both for this task and has some thoughts to share.

Lumix gh3 blurry display problem ?

I have a problem with my Limix GH3 camera. The picture which I see through the viewfinder or internal display is blurry. Like it have been downscaled somehow. Especially it's obvious then I use non-kit lens and Ex. Tele Conv mode. Therefore it's impossible to catch focus right. The picture becoming perfectly sharp when I start video recording so this in not a problem with viewfinder or display. Do you known something about this issue? Maybe there is some workaround to cope with it?

GH3 back from service, is now 60P instead of 50P?

Hi,

I just got my GH3 back from service where they swapped the main board. The problem is that it now has NTSC framerates instead of the PAL framerates that I need. It also has some kind of service menu now called ROM BACKUP as you can see in the attached picture.

It was returned with firmware 1.0 and I have upgraded to 1.1 without that making any difference.

Is there any way to get it back to PAL framerates, or do I have to return it once more?

And what else can be said about the GH3? I've never had such a better time color grading footage. So glad I brought this camera over the GH2

I used to have to do lots of post processing when I had the GH2 to get the miniature effect, but most of this footage is straight off the GH3 with a little bit of grading It's been done a lot of times before, but I thought I'd try it out in my home town

Sorry if this question has been proposed before.

I shot some footage at 50fps on my GH3. After ocking a movie on Premiere (at 25fps) I moved it to Resolve 9 Lite via an XML file. For some unknown reason some clips (only some of them) show different in/out points than the Premiere version. All clips were shot in a 30 min time window. I suspect that it might be because of the Timecode settings of the original clips, inherited from GH3 settings (maybe cause it shifted from 3:xx:xx to 4:xx:xx during shooting?).

What have I done wrong? If it's related to Timecode settings: How should I set my camera to prevent this from happening? How can I fix it in post (either Premiere or Resolve)?

Panasonic GH3 vs Sony FS100

Wondering if anyone has any experience or videos/comparisons between the old low light king, FS100 and our new-ish Panny flagship the GH3? Haven't had a chance to try both out side by side for a test or comparison but I figure someone must have. I would assume the FS100 would still have the edge in lowlight performance (i.e. grain/noise) but what about other aspects like actual resolution tests/comparisons (lines resolved), Dynamic Range, Rolling Shutter, Moire, Slow-Mo, Codec, Grading Capability. I would assume the GH3's 50Mbps would be far superior in color grading latitude and for Green screen compositing than the 24Mbps AVCHD of the Sony? Just be interesting to see if anyone's done any tests or have some insights between the two cameras as I cant seem to fin any online anywhere (all GH2 vs FS100). I've got a GH3 (and a GH2) just curious if the Sony's worth the extra few $K if you don't need XLR and Super 35mm DOF and extreme low light performance. Grateful for anyone who could share some insight on their observed differences between these two great cams! Thanks!

Premiere CS 5.5 PC and playback freezing with GH3 mov files

Lately my CS5.5 with cuda enabled on windows 7 64bit has been crapping itself with a large amount of scrubbed GH3 50p mov files. I get random green preview boxes on the timeline with playback freezing that causes the program to freeze. Rendering also produces green screens in random spots of the timeline also. In order for Premiere to restart and load the media files properly I have to shut down Adobe QT32 Server. I suspect it has something to do with quicktime and mov codec. Never came across this problem with GH1/GH2, only recently with GH3 footage. Its making editing impossible, its driving me nuts. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

I am thinking of doing a system restore and reinstalling CS5.5 again.

Problems Sandisk Extreme Pro 32 GB class 10 95MB/s card on Panasonic GH3

I tested my new memory card - a Sandisk Extreme Pro 32 GB class 10 95MB/s card. I was very surprised the camera mentioned I only had 0,5 hour of recording time - also when I re formatted the card twice. I was using the AVCHD mode 50 p 28 Mbps.

Same amount recording time, also when I switched to MP4 and Mov. I double checked the card on my notebook just to be sure they didn't place a wrong sticker - but it actually is 32 GB.

Then I tried some more cards and it's not the camera - it's this card. Have bought another card and it has the same problem here.

Then I tried resetting the whole camera to factory defaults - still the same problem. I made a recording of 0:30 hour and then checked the memory card on my macbook. It sais I have still 25,4 GB memory left. When I putted my card back into the GH3 it said I have again 30 minutes despite the fact that it told me earlier that it was full. Then I initialized the card again, getting again the 30 minutes. Shoot spent 60+ euro's spend on a 32 GB card that's runs so poor!

Hope somebody has an answer as I will have lots of problems returning these cards. Guess the card maker will blame Panasonic and vice versa.

I bought these lenses about two weeks ago at Adorama in NYC. I have all the original receipts. I tried to return because my company decided to go in on a C300 package. But because I'm missing the warranty card, they won't take it back. Lesson learned - don't throw any paperwork away. Either way I checked with Panasonic and they will honor the warranty so long as you got the original receipt with date of purchase. It's US law. In short, they're are under warranty.

They've only been used once for a camera test on the GH3. They're spectacular lenses but for my productions the GH3 doesn't meet my needs.

Forth bridges - GH3 timelapse and video footage

Here's a wee video I did almost entirely on a GH3 over the past few months (two clips are GH2)

It's a mixture of video and time-lapse of the Forth road and rail bridges around Edinburgh in Scotland. Initially I was just using it as a learning exercise about the GH3, but the bridge folks liked it themselves and started using it.

There are some dust bunnies in there, but I have learned not to go beyond F16 these days

I managed to get 510 feet up to the top of the Forth road bridge, but the barriers were moving so much my timelapse photo's were all blurred, so it's only shaky video footage from the top (I will take a proper tripod up next time)

GH3 codecs and workflow

I'd like to start a conversation about the pros and cons of the different options with the GH3.

I primarily work as an editor, but im not super "tech". For the past few years i've been using a hacked gh1 for my personal stuff, editing on an imac with FCP 7, log and transfer to prores. As far as i have experienced h264 has not been good to edit with? every time i have had footage shot with canons sent to me for work, an assistant editor would trans-code to prores.

so with one of the main selling points of the GH3 being ALL-I, and the talk of "edit ready" h264, im confused.

like everyone else, i want to get the most out of this camera in terms of image quality, so my question is, to transcode or not? if you were to transcode ALL-I footage to prores, would it defeat the purpose of shooting it in the first place? what are the pros and cons of working with H.264?

the primary size and frame rates i'd be using are 1080 24p and 1080 60p for slow motion.

what are you guys doing for post? what are your opinions on codecs and workflow?
