How long will my relation with panny last? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/603/how-long-will-my-relation-with-panny-last Fri, 05 Aug 2011 20:23:58 +0000 luax 603@/talks/discussions I found myself breaking my head over what road to go when it comes to buying into a (new) lens system.
As a PAL native and I felt a little 'put off/betrayed' by panasonic because of the PAL related issues when it comes to the our beloved gh2.
It raised pherhaps completely unnecessary questions like: Will I stick with lumix for the next couple of years? If not? Is it wise to infest a lot of money into a M43 system?
Since I feel that panasonic abandoned me and my PAL pals a little, will I stay faithful to them?
So my question is, what would be a good way to go lensewise that does well on the GH2 but could also soften divorce procedure when going into a potential new marriage in the future?

TrusMT T2 Follow Focus Review https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/118/trusmt-t2-follow-focus-review Fri, 20 May 2011 13:36:38 +0000 Hunter_H_Richards 118@/talks/discussions
I was looking for used follow focuses on ebay for dslr use- to my surprise I saw an Arri Mff-1 look-a-like followfocus for sale brand new $399 by "trusmt". $399 sounded way too cheap but after looking at pictures from their website, it felt low enough risk give it a try, keeping a realistic view that if it was only 1/4 as good as the arri I would be happy with it for dslr use (going on $399 vs $1600 for the arri).

It showed up 2 days later in a pretty little box with precision cut foam for holding the goods (wish I still had this to take a photo of the box but I threw it out when we moved a few weeks ago, I was impressed though)

Contents were:

1x Trusmt t2 follow focus http://trusmt.com/proview.asp?id=44

4x Gear rings (4 different sizes)

1x bag of tools and extra screws

1x trusmt catalogue

First reactions:

Visual build test:
I picked it up and looked around the unit for signs of poor manufacturing, I was amazed how well it was made, very solid and couldnt see with my eye anything showing poor work. Colors and anodizing looked nice too.

Gear rings looked good- reminded me of red rock micro (i dont really care much for these but they work and were included "free")

Follow focus feel test:
To make it fair, I have used every mechanical Arri follow focus from ff1 to ff4, including the mff1, the lwff, ect- most chrosziels, as well as most "affordable" ones like redrock/cavision/cinevate- I got spoiled on the arri's and chrosziels for sure.

I spun the trusmt followfocus wheel to see how the gear box felt, It was very well dampened and actually felt good (possibly too well of dampening, but ill get to this later)

"Wow, I cant believe this was $399" I thought

Two handed "play" test:
(no not what your thinking pervert)

I grabbed the handwheel with one hand and with my other hand, i held the drive gear to see how much play there was. it seemed like too much play- then I realzied I needed to tighten the drive gear screw and after that it was only maybe 2mm of play? Didnt take an accurate reading but what ever it was it was very close to the more budget friend followfocuses like redrock for example and much better than the origional redrock follow focus if you ever tried that one. Not to bad for such a cheap follow focus!

Mounting it on the camera:

I placed a gear on my lens and put the followfocus on the rails. It was pretty tight putting it on- maybe the rod spacing distance on the trusmt was slightly too narrow- I tried it on another rail system and it did the same- tiny bit of work to clamp it on to the rails (I was using chrosziel matte aluminum rods, maybe it works better with steel)

It felt pretty good, but I noticed it took a lot of effort to drive the lens with the follow focus- this was probably because the gear box had too much dampaning grease in it as I was using it on a very smooth focusing lens. But it wasnt terrible- Would actually feel perfect on an AF lens as they seem to have near zero dampening or feel to them in the focus ring.

Hard Stops:

This just got in the way for me so I removed the blue disk along with them using the included tools, they just kinda flopped around or if I locked them, wouldnt allow full lens rotation- you may like them on

Alternate opinion:
My friend who mostly produces but shoots some too came and checked out the rig- and after feeling the follow focus said he thought it felt amazing "So much better than my (XXXXXXX more expensive) follow focus I have" (im not going to name names)

4 Weeks later, pros and cons:

Pros:

Looks nice

Really great build for the price, I dont think you can get anything better here at this level

Versatile mounting from the articulating arm

Good "feel" to value ratio (no arri or chrosziel, but for follow focuses under $900- this thing competes well at its price point)

Comes with extra tools/parts

beveled magnetic marking disk

Drive gear can be moved front to back with one screw

Did I mention this is a nice working follow focus for $399!?!

Cons:

Gear Box is too well dampened (not good for cine lenses, but again I dont think its aimed here- its aimed at people using AF lenses)

Hardstops are OK but better to take them off unless you have an extremely short throw AF lens (just remove 2 screws on the handwheel, then 4 screws to remove the blue disk- put the hand wheel back on)

Some play (About 2 mm isnt bad, but I would prefer zero play- but then again who wouldnt!)

A bit heavy

Some torque in the Arm part if you have it up too high, could be beefed up here a bit

Conclusion:

Let me get real- This thing is no Arri MFF-1, its 1/4 of the price- what did you expect? With that said, I do think its more than 1/2 as good the the Arri, which is saying something. Is it going to be my follow focus on my f3? On a red? maybe not, I probably will have to go to Arri for that.

Will trusmt provide good customer support? I dont know

Is every unit made well? I cant tell you

But for $399, I feel I have a great value of a follow focus unit- perfect for any dslr and ideal for any dslr with AF lenses: I.e. The gh2.

If you have a dslr and your looking for something nice looking, well built, that will actually work as a follow focus and you only have $399 and you appreciate taking a bit of risk- I can honestly say this is the best cheapest follow focus ive tried and would recommend it. Hopefully Trusmt will continue to improve on the design and make it even better in the future.

(Disclaimer: I dont know trusmt people so I cant vouch for them, nor have I received any compensation- Im just basing this review and recomendation off of this one follow focus model I bought from them on ebay, do your own dilagence and get other opinions too!)

Some camera porn attached (again, not ideal for an f3, just showing you!):]]>

Hard to know, to my knowledge the manual doesn't mention anything of the sort. It'd be a nice thing to have though, one step closer to that walk around all day with a dSLR switched on and no significant battery drain. But then again with their pentaprisms SLRs have it easy in this regard.

The footage he had didn't show it (but they had emptied the cards), but I shot some time-lapes today that showed the same line! The odd part was that I had one short clip that was overexposed, that didn't show this line, but all the other ones did. I did use an ND filter on these shots, but it is not on the filter itself (as some clips didn't show it). Does anybody know what could be causing this?]]> Dream World https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/254/dream-world Mon, 20 Jun 2011 13:00:34 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 254@/talks/discussions

Free running with the Panasonic GH2 – Frank Sauer shoots the fast moving sport using autofocus

Short documentary Dream World is about Jason Paul, a free runner who tries to find new ways in his daily life to fulfil his inner needs. On his journey to London he discovers that friendship and companionship are essential values in life.

Jason Paul is an outstanding free running athlete and a good friend of mine. When he asked me to join him at the Red Bull Art of Motion event in London I was more than willing to break out of my daily routine as an animator and director. Free running is still a very young sport. An event like the Red Bull Art of Motion gives athletes from all over the world the possibility to meet, train and communicate in real life, instead of checking each other’s videos on Facebook.

On this particular trip my personal dream was to have a great time with all the athletes, while having the possibility to shoot my short documentary. From the beginning on I wanted to make a film about free running that is not based on difficult tricks or risky jumps, but on interesting characters and the philosophy that comes with it. We started our journey in Frankfurt, Germany, where we went to isolated run-down houses as well as crowded pedestrian areas. I myself had to climb quite a few times to get the shots I wanted or just to follow the guys on their run. I tend to let things happen or just let people do their thing, hoping to discover something within the moment.

All the equipment – including the light weight Panasonic GH2, GoPro HD, Panasonic 20mm, Panasonic 14-140mm, Panasonic 7-14mm, Zoom H4n, Rode VideoMic Pro, Joby Gorillapod and a small rig – fitted in one backpack and made it possible to follow the guys.

Video Plays Fine on Camera but Constant Blips on Computer https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/489/video-plays-fine-on-camera-but-constant-blips-on-computer Mon, 25 Jul 2011 19:44:31 +0000 surfr1121 489@/talks/discussions
I just installed the hack the other day and everything I have shot so far has been fine with the exception of the first couple of seconds of every video having the "blip," but today it figures when I go to shoot something important the video looks fine on the camera but when I do a log and transfer in FCP7, the video has constant choppiness and "blips" all over the place. It is now completely unusable. I thought that the problem might be log and transfer but then I tried to convert it with Toast Titanium and had even stranger results. The .mts file is almost 600mb but when I drag it into Toast, it says it's 2mb and when I export it, it just exports a 1 second clip of just solid green...?? What the heck!? There must be some way to save my video! I mean if it looks good on the camera playback then the file must not be the problem right? Someone PLEASE help me out here!! I was using recommended settings of 42000000 in 24H mode if that helps...

Thanks for any input]]>
What is going on with the "blip" https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/486/what-is-going-on-with-the-blip Mon, 25 Jul 2011 12:01:36 +0000 cbrandin 486@/talks/discussions
At the beginning quantization values for frames vary widely, from a minimum (best quality) of 18 up to 51 (worst quality). By the time the 34th frame has passed the codec settles into a pattern where all P and B frames use a quantization value of around 20 (an entire P or B frame uses a single quantization value). I frames typically use a range of 5 quantization values; it is usually in the range of 18-22. The absolute values can vary one or two values, but the pattern is consistent. For example, for highly detailed scenes I frames range from 18-22 and P and B frames are at 20. For lower detailed scenes those values may go to 19-23 for I frames and 21 or 22 for P and B frames.

Dark scenes seem to cause the quantization values to be low. Currently, the lowest quantization value I've seen is 18 in I frames and 20 in P and B frames. This is true with both hacked and unhacked cameras. Currently, Vitaliy and I are working on trying to lower that. It's not as simple as we had hoped so it may take a while.

The conclusion I have come to is that it might not be possible to eliminate the "blip" because that is when the codec in configuring itself. Note that the blip exists in an unhacked GH2 as well, though not as visible. I think Panasonic made the choice to at least record something, even though the codec isn't really ready yet. I think it was a good decision.

Shutter speed will be an important consideration, as the slower it is the more blurring (and the less detail) there will be. At fast shutter speeds minute detail will change considerably between frames.

With a static scene I frames dominate, and B and P frames don't play much of a role so quality improvements concerning those won't show up.

I'm going to play with this a bit. In the meantime - any thoughts?

Does hacking with ptool permanently alter my GH2? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/416/does-hacking-with-ptool-permanently-alter-my-gh2 Mon, 18 Jul 2011 16:51:58 +0000 jimtreats 416@/talks/discussions
I know that the first post of the main topic is linked to to describe how to actually apply the ptool patch to your GH2 camera. But the one thing I can't quite figure out is whether the current hacking permanently alters our cameras or does it only apply the patch whenever we boot the camera with the file on the SDCARD. I'm used to hacking my 550d in which the camera boots into the hacked firmware whenever the hack is on the SDCARD. This is good as you can always get back to the stock camera, but a bit of a pain as you have to ensure the hack is present on all cards, and you can not format this card without reapplying the firmware hack files to it.

So does ptool hack the camera permanently? If so can we revert to stock firmware?

Finally, I'm sure I saw some mention of a mac version of ptool before the hack for the GH2 was released, now i see that the windows version is recommended to be used instead, is the mac version just not an option right now?

Cheers, I'm just excited to try the hack at some point in the near future but I would just like to know exactly what i'm doing before i contemplate doing so.

Awesome work, and I really start to like this forum for all the other informative posts, not just the incredible hacking progress.]]>
