Digital Noise in Blue Sky - Vanilla Hack https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4967/digital-noise-in-blue-sky-vanilla-hack Tue, 23 Oct 2012 02:19:40 +0000 mattodowd 4967@/talks/discussions Hey all -

Wanted to throw this out to the community and see if there were any thoughts. Going through footage from this weekend's blue sky shoot, and on top of the expected mild posterization, I'm seeing some subtle but noticeable digital noise.

Any thoughts? Here are the specs:

GH2 running Vanilla Hack Firmware V1.1 ISO 160 Nostalgic -2, -2, 0, -1

It was very bright light, but properly exposed with an ND / Polarizing filter.

Thanks, Matt

Adapting Mamiya 645 to GH2 (flange distance) https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4899/adapting-mamiya-645-to-gh2-flange-distance Mon, 15 Oct 2012 10:40:33 +0000 kazuo 4899@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

I've been looking at medium format lenses for sometime now, and have half a mind to slap them onto my GH2. I have seen footage produced by such lenses on an unhacked GH2, and even then, the images are quite out of this world.

I managed to track down an adaptor in the market that interfaces 645 mount to m4/3, but it's exorbitant. A cheaper alternative would be to use a 645 to EOS or Nikon adaptor, and then adapt a second time from EOS or Nikon to m4/3.

Does anyone know if this workaround will cause me to lose focus to infinity? In the first place, will the flange distance be right?

Cheers

GH2 1.4x Teleconverter? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4955/gh2-1.4x-teleconverter Sun, 21 Oct 2012 10:22:12 +0000 JohnBarlow 4955@/talks/discussions Some excellent and classic <10mm lenses for small camera formats exist (and quite cheap) but unfortunately cause vignetting because the circle of illumination does not cover the GH2 sensor or they are extremely soft at the edges.

OK there is the tele mode but some report that as noisy etc.

A 1.4x TC would be nice, but none exist,

So what about removing the optics from a TC and rehousing them in a GH2 Macro extension tube? The tubes fetch <$10 on ebay and an old Hoya 1.4x TC is reported as good and cheap

Camera Bag broke my GH2? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4335/camera-bag-broke-my-gh2 Wed, 22 Aug 2012 20:33:43 +0000 sonowake 4335@/talks/discussions I have a little interesting story and wondering if you've ever experienced it or heard anything like it. So after shooting a wedding video (non professional) for a friend with my hacked GH2 i decided to treat myself to a more discreet camera bag for doing street photography, i ended up buying a Golla Focus medium camera bag from amazon. I bought it because it's small quite fashionable, and a friend had recommended it, but the thing that interested me was the fact in addition to a velcro strap to secure the the front flap, it had magnets to keep it shut but allow fast access. So i get my new case, put my camera in and go out for a shoot around edinburgh during the fringe. I pull it out of the bag and hit the power switch, camera doesn't boot up, press the shutter a few times and it jumps to life for 1 second flashes off. I strap the camera around my shoulder with my strap and try it again about 30 mins later, works fine, end of shoot put it back into the bag, get home take it out attach the camera to my computer, doesn't boot again. next day i try the camera and it's working again fine, going to see my new born niece, pack the camera in the bag, go and when i come to take it out, camera doesn't work again, frustrated i sling the camera over my shoulder and an hour later it works, i'm suspecting the case at this point. So i keep it slinged around me and everything is good for a few days, out of the case. Now i thought i'd give it one more chance, put it in the case, go out to the fringe again with camera and lenses, pull it out camera doesn't work, leave it out, camera still doesn't work. Now my camera only works in about 5 second chunks. I've tried different official batteries, 3rd party ones, with/without/different memory cards, changed lenses. Nothing. I've had the camera for a year with the Hack with nothing wrong, the moment i got this camera bag it's all stopped working.

I suspect the magnets but i don't know.

Noobie here with a few questions https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4917/noobie-here-with-a-few-questions Wed, 17 Oct 2012 12:50:45 +0000 cam_boy 4917@/talks/discussions Hello all, I am a bit new to this forum. While I have been tracking driftwood/cbrandin progress with the recent GH2 Apocalypse patches, I haven't been quite vocal.

Anyway, being a student studying film/animation, I found that the GH2 was the perfect choice for me to experiment with cinematography and filming my own short stories. I bought this wonderful camera back in July and I absolutely love it.

Now, I have been searching around the forums reading up on many different types of lenses, filters, etc, and have took in quite a bit of knowledge over the past few months.

Recently I purchased a Century Optics 1.33x adapter (focus through), and from what I have read up on this lens, it is wonderful for run-and-gun type work. Now here are my questions pertaining to this anamorphic; I understand that this adapter combined with a Tokina achromatic diopter is an absolute gem, however, I cannot find this diopter anywhere, and I understand it is incredibly hard to find.

I have however, found a few achromatic diopters manufactured from Century Optics, but I cannot find much reviews or opinions on this diopter in conjunction with there anamorphics. Would the two make a good fit in terms of image quality? Or should I invest in some other achromatic diopter?

I am sorry if this has already been covered, but all I seem to find is information pertaining to diopters with a LA7200 and other lenses, nothing specifically about the Century Optics.

HELP - Getting CINESTYLE results from the GH2 ? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4056/help-getting-cinestyle-results-from-the-gh2- Thu, 26 Jul 2012 17:40:41 +0000 Electric_Haggis 4056@/talks/discussions Well, I'm stumped.

As a new & and proud owner of a GH2, I've downloaded the latest (V1.1 25p) firmware and am investigating hacks.

A higher bitrate is obviously desirable - around 50Mbps will hit the spot, so I'm currently trying: "Driftwood Quantum X v5b and v5c 'β Pictoris' (baby Quantum X) VBR" (35 - 75Mbps variable)

The REAL question is about capturing more dynamic range and squeezing maximum latitude out of the GH2 to get results that resemble Cinestyle. I see evidence here...

... yet trying that hack, I see zero latitude difference.

Come to that, I've tried several hacks now, and they all look identical (apart from bitrate).

I'm trying to research this, but struggle to get real answers. What should one do to get Cinestyle results as above???

Thanks in advance...

The power output is the same on both models. (7.2V 1200mAh 8.7Wh)

This is the first material I share here. I shot it completely at 720p50 (I wanted 60p, but the band couldn't keep up, they had to play too fast!), with the GH2 of course. The hack was 88Mbps, but the 50p footage wasn't up to par, and ended up showing compression artifacts I had to get rid of.

This was the first work I made with the GH2, only 4 days after it arrived! It was crazy. I used the kit lens for the few wide angle shots there are (the 14-42mm), the 20mm f1.7 and a Minolta MD Rokkor-X 50mm f1.7, which I still have and love it (although I want to get a PG f1.4).

The video was shot in a single day, kind of in a hurry. I actually like narrative stuff, just didn't have the chance to do it here, but I'll be showing a couple more videos I made that actually tell a story later.

Please tell me what you think!

Canon's Picture Style Editor necessary for color grade? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4798/canons-picture-style-editor-necessary-for-color-grade Wed, 03 Oct 2012 02:33:09 +0000 RyanPW 4798@/talks/discussions I recently came upon this great short film shot with the Canon 550d, and I found the color grade just blew me away. I noticed that their was some film grain added, and some other work done, but I found something about the quality of the image to really stand out from a lot of other 550d footage. It was in fact the Picture Style Editor that Canon has which allows you to create a preset that does a color balance without affecting your skin tones. This was mentioned in the comments of the video (the 8th person down) as a main reason why the director doesn't work with a gh2, as their is no form of this for doing a proper color grade while maintaining the skin tones.

Here is the video:

But could you not do the same grade in after effects with something like the Color Finesse tool? Or perhaps in CS6's speedgrade program (I have not used this yet)? It would seem quite compelling to me that panasonic does not have an option like this for their camera's as it does make a pretty big difference, but perhaps it is only because their is another work around that the director of this video did not know about? I'm curious to hear if anyone knows a solution to this problem, as I'd love to keep my skin tones intact for future shoots as I really do like the color grade of this video.

Thanks for the input!

Getting to the bottom of the noise https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4609/getting-to-the-bottom-of-the-noise Mon, 17 Sep 2012 07:54:05 +0000 Bania 4609@/talks/discussions Hi Guys.

I've just started reviewing footage from a recent shoot and am a little perturbed by the amount of noise showing up in shadow details. The problem has occurred on a range of shots in different lighting conditions and even at very low ISOs.

I was using a GH2 for the shoot, with LPowell's Flowmotion 2.02 hack. This was the first time I had used a Gh2 (let alone a hacked one) so it was certainly a baptism of fire. For the majority of shooting I was using a lumix 7-14 ultra-wide lens.

I've uploaded a short clip with three different shots, each displaying the telltale noise. In the first, the noise is visible above the character's foot, on the side of the piano. This was shot at a ISO800 so it makes sense that there will be noise. Still, it seems like there is more than there should be. the second clip was shot at iso160 yet there is still a fair amount of noise showing up in the man's beanie. In the third clip, also shot at iso160, again there is a lot of noise in the man's sweatshirt.

http://www.mediafire.com/?1m7c10p98tvy883

I didn't fully test the patch and cam before the shoot so at the end of the day it's my problem, but I'm hoping someone can shed some light on the source of the issue so I can avoid this next time around.

Cheers
