GH2 Hack (Don't kill me for asking this question) lol https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9786/-gh2-hack-dont-kill-me-for-asking-this-question-lol Mon, 03 Mar 2014 17:18:20 +0000 bman 9786@/talks/discussions Please don't kill me for this question I've searched these forums for 2 days. I know there's answers out there but can't quite find one to fit me.

Yep I want to hack the GH2. I just am doing green screen and want a nice clear image. Want a very reliable hack that's not going to destroy my camera.

Question 1. Which one do I buy?

Question 2. Once hack is installed do you just press record on the hacked settings to get the best video?

Once again don't kill me, I am just lost. I'll even donate money to the person that helps me out if I need to lol.

Does anybody know lens pinout for Panasonic gh bayonet? I need to remotely control focus of mft lens connected to gh body. Can I cut some wires of bayonet connector and connect external encoder to control the focus? Or can I do this by adding some DIY electronics? Of course I mean partial disassembling the body. And I need iris still controlled by body controls as usual. Thanks in advance.

1/2-inch ENG zoom lenses and mounting solutions https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5862/12-inch-eng-zoom-lenses-and-mounting-solutions Mon, 21 Jan 2013 21:08:50 +0000 balazer 5862@/talks/discussions The 1/2-inch format has an image circle diameter of 8 mm, which is very close to the GH2's 1080 ETC-mode diagonal of 8.3 mm.

1/2-inch format ENG lenses are made for 3-CCD cameras. The standard specifies an amount of glass behind the lens for the prism and color filters. It also specifies slightly different flange focal distances for green than for red and for blue. Since the GH2 has no prism and has its color sensors all in the same plane, these lenses are not perfectly matched for the GH2. In my testing, at wide aperture settings the image becomes hazy due to some focus aberration - I'm guessing mostly because of the absence of glass behind the lens. Stopping down to f/4 or so mostly fixes the haziness. In theory, the lack of glass behind the lens could be corrected with nothing more than a flat block of glass between the lens and the sensor. It would take more complicated optics to correct for the differences in the flange focal distances of the different colors, but I don't expect the longitudinal chromatic aberration to be very bad if this weren't corrected.

There are two 1/2-inch mounts: standard, and Sony. Most 1/2-inch lens models were made in both mounts. About two thirds of the used lenses for sale are in standard mount, and one third in Sony mount. I have attached sample images of the different mounts. The standard mount has a flange focal distance of 35.74 mm. The Sony mount has a flange focal distance of 38 mm.

ciecio7 on eBay makes a 1/2-inch Sony mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter: http://en.foto-akcesoria.com.pl/index.php/shop/product?idproduct=321&productname=1-2-quot-38-mount-mft

He also had a 1/2-inch standard mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter listed for sale, but I ordered the adapter and it was wrong. I'm sending my adapter back, but I'm sure someone could work with him to get him the proper specifications for a 1/2-inch standard mount adapter. The 1/2-inch standard mount is quite similar to the 2/3-inch B4 mount, except with a different flange focal distance. He already makes 2/3-inch B4 mount adapters.

Canon 1/2-inch ENG lens models:

  • KH: portable high def
  • H: portable
  • PH: studio/field
  • YH: portable pro standard def and pre-HD (semi-pro)

  • SX or SY in the servo unit model number indicates a Sony interface. IX, HX, or BX indicates a standard interface.

Fujinon 1/2-inch ENG lens models:

  • HS: premiere series high def, standard mount
  • HSs: premiere series high def, Sony mount
  • ZS: high def, standard mount
  • XS: high def, Sony mount
  • S: standard def and pre-HD

  • -38, -D38, -18, or -D18 suffix in the servo unit model number indicates a Sony interfaces. Suffixes with other numbers usually indicate a standard interface.

Standard definition lenses in most cases are more than capable of delivering HD resolutions, though not necessarily across the entire frame and at all focal lengths and aperture settings. HD lenses are made to a higher standard, and they cost a lot more.

Avid / Edius GH2 workflow 25pfs wraped in 50i (also works for Canon and other formats) https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9750/avid-edius-gh2-workflow-25pfs-wraped-in-50i-also-works-for-canon-and-other-formats Sat, 01 Mar 2014 12:43:50 +0000 fm4fan 9750@/talks/discussions Hi,

I just post a few workflow ideas for Avid and also Edius to get around some common problems.

Some cameras (eg GH2) wrap the 1080/25p in a 50i (25fps) container or do other weird stuff like show you a very strange framerate.

Workflow Avid MC6 or higher:

  • create a 1080/25p project
  • AMA link your card (don't rename your files otherwise your AMA Link doesn't work)
  • In your bin enable the "field motion" column/heading and with a click on the line(s) Avid interprets the file(s) as progressive or progressive strobe.
  • Transcode to Avid DNX and hope for the best because Avid struggles a lot with GH2 files (Avid is king with pro files but h.264 isn't pro for him).
  • When you run into transcode troubles you have to transcode the files that didn't work with a 3rd party program like usually Squared5 (doesn't like my GH2 files too), so like Adobe media encoder.

if you have files with weird frame rates

  • Open the Console (Under Tools) and type eg. "SetAMAQTForcedFrameRate true 25.00" and hit enter
  • some message appears and your linked AMA's are now 25fps (or whatever you typed in)
  • you have to type in the commando every time you start your Avid (doesn't remember it)
  • to stop type "SetAMAQTForcedFrameRate false 0"

If you have different framerates / resolutions you can mix and match them in Avid

  • work in another project on a different framerate / resolution
  • open your main project
  • import the bin(s) from the other project(s)
  • Avid will handle everything

And because I'm on field in the middle of nowhere with a small laptop I take this approach to check my files, make a rough cut or transcribe an interview.

Workflow Edius: Basically you don't have to think about anything

  • drag in whatever you like
  • change some files to another field motion
  • mix other framerates/formats,...

I don't love Edius, but you have to love some features of it like working with everything native on a small laptop or ...

hope this helps ciao, Hans-Peter

Panasonic GH2 AVCHD Files transcode or not? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9726/panasonic-gh2-avchd-files-transcode-or-not Thu, 27 Feb 2014 11:42:19 +0000 arsharif4620 9726@/talks/discussions I am new to the GH2. I have shot a few shorts with the camera since having it. Right now, I use sony vegas pro 12 to edit my videos. I import the MTS files into vegas, edit, then export to wave. I have read a lot on this forum about transcoding mts files to prores and other formats to get the most out of post processing. I am wondering, should I transcode my mts files before importing them into vegas or is it fine to just load the avchd files drectly into vegas pro and leave it as that? What i've read on the forum so far about this topic has just left me more confused as before. Should I transcode the mts file or not?

I must say that I have been very impressed by the quality of the videos i've shot so far using only the MTS files. But if transcoding the mts files will make my videos even better I would like to know.

Thanks

We used hacked GH2 and GH1 cameras through out, see if you can tell where - although I'm sure you'll be able to pick out the obvious ones. 3 person crew mostly, mad low budget and a lot of time and care went into it.

Which music works best with the trailer... version 1 or 2?

We are trying to get as many YouTube hits as possible before approaching a few networks and FX Canada,

Thanks!

Can't decide which one I should pick so if the community here could help me it would be very wonderful.

SETUP 1: Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

SETUP 2: Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Nikon 28mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor , Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens

I'm going to be filming for the most part, short films, and I want lenses that will give me a nice cinematic feel? (can't find the right word to use here) But, just want to get your guys' opinions on these setups and what you guys think I should do. I am on a budget here so if you are going to make other suggestions for setups please try to keep it below $850. Thanks!

I am wondering about the right decision in choosing an anamorphic option. There are so many, that have become rareties in some respect. There is the Panasonic AG-LA7200 16:9 Anamorphic Lens Adapter, which is average price is 1000 dollars. Than we have a Century Precision adapter, which is harder to find, but a cheaper pick-up, that seems to provide intense flares. Now we also have the endless array of anamorphic projector lenses, adapted with lens clamps and such, that some say is better, and some say not so much. These include Kowa(which do look pretty nice sporting a 2x Anamorphic, ranging from 100 bucks to over 700, Isco-Optic focusing ana proj lens, and the Sankyoscope anamorphot 1.5x including a +0.5 diopter, focus through, which I haven't found for less than 1000 dollars, and I'm not sure how much the diopter will assist me, but anyhow there are many more, which I'm sure most are aware of. I am just hoping to get a little more insight into what the best and most effective options are.

Thank you Kindly, -Trev

Looking for the best hacks for shooting live video. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9570/looking-for-the-best-hacks-for-shooting-live-video. Sat, 08 Feb 2014 22:02:47 +0000 Ravage 9570@/talks/discussions Good evening everyone. I have had my GH2s for over a year, and have only dabbled with hacks because I am nervous to use them in a live shoot incase something goes wrong, I could loose out on having footage. I typically shoot live Rock bands. This year I will be filming 3 Cruises in April. (Monsters of Rock cruise, Moody Blues Cruise, and Cruise to the edge) I have 3 GH2 cameras (2 I bought new, and 1 I just purchased used) I would like to try one of the hacks that would be best for my type of shoots. Think Concert stage, can be inside with concert lighting and outside poolside or on the beach. I will also be doing a lot of meet and greets and interview stuff. The end result for everything I am shooting is for a DVD / Bluray disk for the People to buy (It will be a few months after the cruise) I have a few different lens, the 14-140 HD Panasonic lens looks the best over all. I did just purchase the 45-175 HD Power lens, I have only gotten to play with it a little, I got it to be more like a video camera with w/t toggle. SO far not to impressed. I also have a Large Canon lens that is modified to work with the camera. It is pretty good but I still need some time with it to use it better. (Canon BCTV lens with Powered w/t) I realize that I could record at much faster data rates that would make it look better but that would cut down on how much I could record. So I would like to keep my record times to allow for a 2 hour show. I already have about 8 of the San Disk Extreme 45MB/s and I have a few 40 and 30 cards as well. I would prefer not to buy anymore at this point. Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. Dave "Ravage" Stabley

Nikon D600 or Hacked GH2? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9563/nikon-d600-or-hacked-gh2 Thu, 06 Feb 2014 21:14:36 +0000 mjwhitaker 9563@/talks/discussions Hey guys,

I've been using a hacked GH2 for a couple of years and have been really happy with the results. Just recently though, I had a shoot and the GH2 gave me some issues. My camera froze several times while using Moon T7, even with a 95mb/s Sandisk, causing me to miss several key shots. Also, when lighting conditions changed unexpectedly, the GH2 once again let me down with its poor low light performance. There were 2 other cameras on the shoot that picked up my slack, both were Nikon D600's. They smashed my low light performance and of course had no difficulties with their firmware. I've been wanting a full frame cam for a while anyway, so today I decided to buy a Nikon D600. Obviously I haven't really had a chance to do much yet, but after some brief initial tests, I think I'm coming down with a case of buyer's remorse. I was wondering if any of you guys had the opportunity to use both cameras on actual shoots and why type of results you got.

Family fishing trip I shot a few days ago. It was totally improvised. I didn't know the location or what I'd be able to capture until we arrived. Shoots like this are fun - you have to think quickly about how to develop the story with what you're given. I wanted to share this with you guys as it was my first shoot that I can post where I used the c/y speedbooster. Great piece of gear. I've shot a couple commercials this summer with it as well - but they are not public yet. I used a c/y to m42 adapter which worked flawlessly with my 35mm f2, 50mm macro f4, and 135mm f2.5 lenses. Shot using smooth all -2, and on a monopod 561hdv, and a mini hi hat with a manfrotto ball head. Edited and graded in fcpx. I'm also using a Lee CC30M gel cut and fixed in front of the sensor to give me a more even color distribution of RGB. (You must manually white balance when doing this, but I always do anyways.) Utilizing a CC30M gel is an effective form of pre grading your footage before it hits the sensor. I've tested this out all summer and credit Aki Hartikainen whose initial tests with the gh1 sparked my curiosity for experimenting with getting rid of the gh2 green cast and better post grading using this method.
