FS: Genus Bravo Follow Focus

Hi everybody,

I am selling my Genus Bravo Follow Focus. It has done a good job over the last years but has now been replaced by a newer version.

The dampening fluid of the FF was replaced recently and it turns buttery smooth now. The only drawback is that it has a backlash of about 20 degrees when changing focus direction. I assume this is caused by a problem inside the gear box that could probably been solved by someone with good fine mechanics knowledge. The Follow Focus is built like a tank and is in a very good condition aside from some marks and spots around the rod mount.

I'm based in Germany and I'm asking 200€ incl. shipping anywhere in EU or 250$ + shipping for anywhere else in the world. If you've questions please send PM.

Foley / Music - audio sampling kit

I am looking for some advice on audio sampling kit. I want to pick up a good quality microphone with very low self noise that I can use for high quality audio samples to be used for music production and foley, probably a condenser as I want to use it outside for field recording as well as in the studio. A wide frequency response seems the way to go for audio production, but this probably means getting a new recorder (I currently have a Sony pcm-m10) which is quite low noise but probably not good enough for music production?

Price wise (I understand this can soak up all I am willing to throw at it) I have been looking at the Earthworks qtc40/50 Mics but would prefer to spend a bit less (around £500/$800) for the mic especially if I need a new recorder.. I have also been researching portable dat recorders which seem to have a good frequency response, but not sure if old tech is a good option? Analog tone?

It would also be nice if I could use the sound kit with the GH4 too..

If I need a new recorder and mic I'd like to keep it around £1200 - £1500 ($2000-$2500) for both.. It would be great to get some input from others as over six months of research has still left me confused about the right kit to go for to get the best quality on a budget, thanks :)

Few important things to remember.

1. BIN prices are mostly very strange, do not buy using them.
2. Wait for auction of the same item or contact seller directly.
3. Remember that they have their site with shop now - http://www.gini1.com/
It looks pretty strange with many cloned products, etc, so be sure to contact them first.
4. If you do not like particular design or need extra items - also contact them directly.

Overall - same as ThrusMT for follow focuses, Gini is best option is you want really quality item for small price.

I hope that they will be present on our forum soon, so feel free to ask some questions or write suggestions.

Anamorphic newbie..

I think this is really nice community that is able to help each other..
I have hackable GH1 .. and I'm preparing for a really large project next month and I think this is the right time for the anamorphic lens for my GH1..
First .. There are two types of anamorphic lens squeeze, right? 2,0X and 1,5X? .. what is the general output difference here? Like the final aspect ratio?

And second thing.. I decided to buy a anamorphic lens for my GH1 of the eBay.. and I need some good tips for cheap (you know.. I don't have lot of money as a digital multimedia, motion advertising and motion picture student at this moment) anamorphic lens and also some converter (adapter) (?) to mount it on GH1? I really have no idea how this works.. so maybe you can help me to get started with this stuff.. :-) Basically, I need a great anamorphic setup for a lower price (I really don't have hundreds dollars for this.. you know) for my GH1..

So maybe this can be a really helpful information for others, with a idea of buying an anamorphic gear for GH1/GH2..

STEADICAM SOLUTION FOR GH2

I wonder if anyone tried using steadicams with micro43? It should or should not make sense given our lightweight bodies. I bought a Glidecam pro 200 after Manfrotto's 585 modo didn't work completely (you can have your camera balanced when you are standing still only). So what are the options? I heard somebody was using Glidecam HD1000 with better results. It does have better controls for setting up the weights. It is important because one can't spend 2 hours balancing the system before going out to shoot. So if anybody is able to share his experience on this matter — please do that. Btw theoretically speaking which camera is easier to stabilize: heavier or lighter? My GH2 with 20mm pancake weighs almost nothing, but I can't say it helped.

Well, I've held off on this as long as I can. Non-paying clients have forced my hand – so I have to part with some beloved gear that I put a lot of time, research and money into acquiring together. This is a nice "full package" of GH2 shooting accessories. It includes:

• Anodized Cage with handles, rails, allen wrenches, and threaded holes, even has lips to secure camera and allows battery change without removing camera.

• Matte Box (vertically adjustable) with flags and different sized rings,

• Rails (vertically adjustable on tripod mount), both top and bottom rails

• Monitor with three batteries, hood, charger, short HDMI cable, and AC plug. Not a high-end monitor, but works well, reliable, and is great for focusing.

• Follow-focus, including two different mount heights, I can forewarn that this does have some play, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's an easy fix.

• Threaded arms and shoes mounts – work for mounting any items on cage or camera.

All is in good cosmetic and working condition (and in a nice Pelican Case), except the minor play on the follow focus which was mentioned. If possible, I'd like to sell the kit or as much together as I can. Check out pictures and make me reasonable offer if interested please.

*note this does not include the camera bodies themselves.

GH3 Cage

Hey guys, I wanted to show you guys how the Wooden Cage works with the GH3, I did forget to point out 2 important features on the cage because I wont be using them, one is the fact that it comes with a small plate that can help prevent your camera from slipping if you use a follow focus and the 2nd one is that you can also use the hotshoe as another point to tighten or secure the camera. Hello, By default (if autofocus AF is on : when I click AF/MF button, MPAS is enabled) , the lens ring of my 20mm f/1.7 does nothing (unused).

Is it possible to assign the lens ring to some parameter ?

Fancier FC-470 tripod

This is not a review yet.
Just initial observations.

Good quality and handy tripod. Not very cheap.
Legs. Better than EI717 legs.
Adjustable mid spreader and locks are more handy.
Legs have spikes and removable rubber boots.
Head. Very good.
Counterbalance is adjustable without steps, this is big plus.
But. Not really suitable in current state for small cameras.
As actual minimum of normally working counterbalance needs full rig with monitor, battery, counterweights, not small lens. :-)
Even then weight can be small. You need something around 3.5-4.5Kg at minimum CB adjustment.
Otherwise initial impressions are pretty ok. Drag adjustments work. Head do not have micro stucks with largest drag.

GH1 with Samyang 14mm looks small on this head.

I'll update this topic after testing it with full rig and 35mm Rokinon lens:

Nikon D7100 or Lumix GH3, next investment

I am hesitating into my next camera and perhaps other are in the same situation, I use my gh1 mostly for private work, interviews, backstage's and teasers for personal projects, Know I am looking for an upgrade, I have leica r lenses that can be fitter on to nikon or m43 so that is not a concern, from what I've seen so far (not much) the D7100 has more noise on the shadows but that is also with much more flat profile compared to the gh3, so it is not fair to say. Resolution wise I think the gh3 wins here but in the dynamic range area the points go to the d7100.

What I need is headphone jack and stop doing double sound for unimportant interviews, so the d5200 is out of the question for me.

d7100 pros The plus is the extra superb photo mode that is great for some stopmotion project I happen to have sometimes. (Communicates with dragon frame) The low gama profiles that combined with a external recorder could develop into something interesting if I wanted to. Low Moire (as far as I've seen) Big Sensor Nice nikon zoom lenses with aperture ring that work with every camera. Aps Sensor 1.5x

cons The sadness of not getting a swivel screen and the unhackability of the camera nature (a big thing). No timelapse, No silent shutter so shutter wear will be a concern. 730g

Gh3 pros The video camera wholeness, The screen, and evf, silent shutter and timelapse mode. posibility of combining it with the metabones adapter to make it 1.3x (we would need to wait and see if it is worth it) (add 400$) Crazzy hacking possibilities Nice to have as a compliment to the bmcc, same adapters and lenses. (possible bcam perhaps) 550g

cons A little moire has been reported Smaller sensor than my gh1 !!!!! need to buy metabones Price is with some big boys. No stopmotion DragonFrame control.

questions for the d7100 Does the camera has histogram with manual leica lenses???? this is really important Does anyone know if the hdmi output is 25p or 50i for pal land or is it 60i like the d5200??? and 422 ???? Do the low isos of the d7100 also have so much noise.????

Glide Gear Stabilizer Review

Just got the Glide Gear Stabilizer and thought I would do a quick review. It's modeled off the Steadicam Merlin design. The build quality is very good. Bottom line - it works, and for $73 on amazon, it's pretty cheap. I did some test shots walking up and down stairs, as well as around the house, moving forward at times, panning at times...and it's smooth. It definitely removes all the microshakes you might get when trying to walk. I watched their 3 minute YouTube video which gives instructions on balancing, and spent 5-10 minutes working on balancing my GH2 with lens, lens adapter, and small rubber hood, and it was fairly easy to achieve nice balance. By the 3rd test shot, I had gotten the hang of it. A bit heavy after awhile, but nothing too bad, and I suppose that's normal for stabilizers that require you to operate it with one hand. At $73 it's a good deal, and with a reasonable amount of practice, I believe you could achieve some very smooth moving shots.

Gear pitch on ENG Broadcast lenses

I know the gearing on ENG broadcast lenses have a denser pitch than the standard mod 0.8 found on cine lenses, but what is the actual pitch of the gears? Is it the same on all brands of ENG lenses (Canon, Fujinon mainly), or are there variations? This topic includes lenses with B4, B3, C-mount, and 1/2" bayonet mounts.

So fellow PV'ers, Cine Gear 2013 is just around the corner and I was wondering if anyone else in the LA area would like to team up and cover the event for PV with Vitaliys permission of course.

We could pick a day, head over and tag team the booths as correspondents covering all the major exhibits people request here. Maybe have a few people with us as experts in each field of production. Something like that. Who knows. Maybe even Bed Bath and Beyond. I don't know if we'll have time!

I don't mind at all and I pretty much have any and all gear we'll need.

As you may know, Sound Devices presented very interesting recorders at NAB.
Price for lower model will be not low - about $1600 as far as I remember.

Two XLR inputs, etc.

Important question is - does it have any form of audio monitoring?
I do not see any mention of headphone output.

2012 is drawing to a close. I'm right now trying to optimize my workflow and sell a few pieces of equipment I don't necessarily need anymore.

My own opinion about this lens is not very good.

Recently available Samyang 35mm F1.4 is better is every regard (build quality, sharpness, focus, etc). Except size and weight :-)

Suggestions for Best Camera + Lens for ~$1K

Hello,

I've spent weeks researching, and I've decided to turn to some aficionados.

First up, Camera: I've found that the GH2 is the best price/performance camera. Is this still true today, or are there better ones, such as the Olympus E-M5? Or, would it be best to wait -- do you think there will be anything extraordinary worth waiting for in the first few months of 2013?

Lastly, Lens: I've seen some people use old TV SD 2/3" Lenses, like B4 and C-Mount, etc. Are these worth it? I've heard that (for the most part), the IQ isn't very good, and there's a large amount of work (modifications) to get them to work.

Should I instead be looking at native lenses, like the Leica 25mm? Lots of people talk about anamorphic lenses, and the Voigtlander f/0.95. It seems like almost everyone raves about the Voigtlander, and while it seems expensive, is it truly worth it (price/performance) over say the Panny 20mm or even the Leica 25mm?

15mm rods are base for every gear.
It could be very simple camera support or complicated shoulder support with cage and top handle.
In any case, you need rods.

**Best option:** Varavon carbon rods, available usually on mondays deals.
