This forum was fantastic for me with the GH1) which I started this filmmaking journey with (although technically it was my girlfriend's Nikon D90 or my sister's Canon T2i that I borrowed for the first handful of shoots), but in recent years I've been considering an upgrade. First to the Panasonic G7, simply to get 4K, but as the price of the Panasonic G85 kept on coming down on eBay that tempted me instead for the better low light, the live HDMI out, and of course the IBIS! But this is a slippery slope, because as I wait... then the Panasonic G9 got that big 10bit firmware update, and their prices were coming down with time too. (& more firmware updates came out too, such as better AF for the G9, and being a USB webcam for the G9)

Never really seriously considered the Panasonic GH5 or GH4, as they always got the most attention, thus I felt they always kept up the highest prices on the secondhand market, compared to the value that the Panasonic G series offered instead. But I still kept half an eye on the GH4/GH5 sales, just in case. Even considered a few alternative options such as Fujifilm, or for instance the Panasonic S1 that I bid on last week until the price shot up far too high for my tastes. In the end I kept on coming back to Panasonic MFT as offering by far the best value for money. (& the fact I already owned MFT lenses helped too)

However, today I won an action for a Panasonic GH4 for only NZ$417! (less than US$300) That was a price too good to ignore (but I doubt I'd have bid a penny higher), thus to my surprise I find out I've settled with the old Panasonic GH4 as the upgrade from the G6 I'm going with. Even though I'd like the IBIS / better high ISO / etc of the G85 or G9, it isn't such a bad thing to have settled for this cheap deal of a GH4 because it is just going to be for casual vlogging usage to create simple content for my YouTube channel. (https://www.youtube.com/SoundSpeeding/)

One very small benefit of going with the Panasonic GH4, is that when the price of the Panasonic G9 finally tumbles down to sub US$300 (right after the Panasonic G12 gets released?), then I'll be able to use the same Panasonic DMW-BLF19 batteries in both! (which wouldn't have been possible if I'd got a G7 or G85)

Now, how many more years until I upgrade my "big camera", the Sony PMW-F3? The F3 is a truly fantastic camera! I still think there isn't a better 1080 camera at this price point (but the world is moving onto 4K). Had it a fair few years, unfortunately the F3's popularity didn't last too long because the Canon C300mk1 got released shortly after and the C300mk1 just dominated the low / mid end professional work for that generational cycle. (interesting how the secondhand F3 has seen a bit of renaissance in 2019/2020 thanks to Caleb Pike & others)

Been wanting to do the natural upgrade to a Sony PMW-F5 for a while now, but can't justify it because as a Sound Mixer I don't do a high enough volume of camera work. The FS7/FS5 or even a secondhand FS700R might very well make more sense! (I like for instance all the work done with the FS700R by this guy: https://vimeo.com/paulbates However the FS700 isn't as nicely ergonomic as the FS5! That compact size is fantastic)

Just keeping my eyes open for the right secondhand deal, in absolutely no rush whatsoever. (as I'm still primarily by far a Production Sound Mixer, as what I do day to day)

Lumix G6 vs GH1 vs GH2 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24742/lumix-g6-vs-gh1-vs-gh2 Thu, 19 Nov 2020 02:14:34 +0000 pablomorado 24742@/talks/discussions Hi! I am new to the photography world and am currently looking for a overall good-for-video camera on a REALLY tight budget (mainly for people close-ups, YouTube related content). I've found an used Lumix GH1 which I would love to hack for about 70€, which I think is a really nice price... The thing is that I also have available an 80€ used Lumix G6, which I've heard is a bit better than the GH1, but I dunno with the bitrate improvements on the hacks available... And to top It all I've been offered a 130€ almost brand new GH2, which I think would give me the best results out of the 3...

What do you think? Is it worth it the 40€+ for the GH2 compared to the G6? I've seen some footage comparisons and they seem to be really close, but that is without the crazy 100+MBs bitrate you can get out of some GH2's hacks...

Is the GH1 just good enough with stable 50MB's±? Maybe It is worth it to expend more on a way better lens? I am not focusing on features btw. Just pure IQ. Man I just love the Lumix look! but if you know of other hackable/Bang for buck (better than any of these in any case) cameras I should look for, please just tell me!

I know it's a lot but would really love some feedback. :) Cheers and thank you!!

Australian Panasonic G6 - Can anybody upload a ROM-Dump? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19322/australian-panasonic-g6-can-anybody-upload-a-rom-dump- Sat, 31 Mar 2018 05:25:14 +0000 Scyte 19322@/talks/discussions Hey guys, can anybody who ownes a australian G6 (PAL without 30min Limit) upload a G6U.TXT with the contents of the USER-ROM?

I own the european version: If a change the Version between european versions The ROM-Dump changes at position H017/Ld( the last 2 bytes changes)

eg,e -> 02
ef -> 08
eb -> 09
ec -> 11

the other number can be found in the service manual.

May be it is posible to remove any recording limit with such a ROM-hack.

Can anybody upload a australian ROM-DUMP? Has anybody tested to change the region code over ROM? The service manual discribes 2 MainPCBs: one with suffix A(Rest of the World), the other with suffix B(Europe). Does anybody know if these are different or have only other ROM entries?

Panasonic G6: overexposes 1 to 2 stops https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15813/panasonic-g6-overexposes-1-to-2-stops Wed, 28 Sep 2016 23:59:54 +0000 gameb 15813@/talks/discussions I am still using 2 good old G6 for a documentary project, but I have an issue (not new) with it. When I choose the exposure through the viewer and it looks fine to me, the result, after transfering to the computer, is an overexposure of 1 to 2 stops easily. Is there anyway to control what the viewer indicates me, so I can do the right exposure straight away? I am using only primelenses (Nokton 25mm, SLR 17.5, Takumar 85mm), so I have the ... "shoot without lens" button selected in G6 menu. Thanks for helping.

G6 Basic Movie Mode & Legacy Lens Questions https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11473/g6-basic-movie-mode-legacy-lens-questions Thu, 02 Oct 2014 15:11:19 +0000 redstar17 11473@/talks/discussions Movie Mode Question: So I'm setting my REC FORMAT and REC QUALITY on the touchscreen MOTION PICTURE screens. All set, now ... I want to set the ISO and shutter speed. Can I do this and shoot a video in Shutter priority (S)? Or do I have to shoot in Manual or Movie? Can I set the settings as if they were a stills setting and then push the red button and these stills settings will control video also? I'd like to avoid Movie mode so that I can allow the aperature to grab the correct light. I'd also like to avoid Movie mode because I need to snap stills while shooting videos (I know the video interruption danger). What I need to do is to keep the big stills button active so that I can shoot stills while shooting (ending) a video record. And a crazy thought -- can I set video and stills at different settings? ANOTHER way of asking -- When I set up settings for still photos do those same settings become part of the video recording set up?

Legacy Lens Questions: I have three Oly M3/4 auto-focus zooms that I want to use with my G6. I have a Lumix Pany-to-Oly adapter. Do I lose the ability to auto focus (it seems like I do)? If they should zoom and focus correctly what settings on the camera will make this work? THANKS!

Newbie looking for lenses recommandations https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11316/newbie-looking-for-lenses-recommandations Wed, 17 Sep 2014 15:50:41 +0000 monks19 11316@/talks/discussions Hi. I do some events filming with Lumix cameras (G6 & GH2) using Sigma (Nikon mounts) zoom lenses with RJ adapters. All lenses are at f2.8 max for speed and luminosity. I know that the lowest can go down to f1.4, but I havent been able, so far, to find zoom lenses like this, whatever the brand, especially at a good price (lower than 500 $, used or new).

Does any of you have any recommandations/suggestions on which zoom lenses (whatever the brand, as long as an m43 adapter is avalaible) I should get with my cams (and which adapters, if needed and unavalaible with the RJ m43 ones) ?

Thanks to answer.

Bit of a long shot but I managed to swap a GH2 for the G6 in the first place through here so why not try eh?

Comes in original box, works perfectly and in great condition. Has been a solid little performer.

Reasons:-

  • GX7 cuts better with GH3 (A Cam for me)
  • GX7 is smaller (I work with two cameras on a belt system, and this will make this easier)
  • I don't need mic input on G6, or swivel screen
  • G6 has 4:3 viewfinder, which I do not need for video work. Therefore GX7 will give me larger image on eye

long time PV user - first time poster.

I'd like to ask some opinions - Here in the UK Panasonic are about to launch a spring promotion (it's a bit hush hush) the deal is, you buy a GH3, and get the battery grip and a 22mm 1.4 Panny lens thrown in for good measure. (could be a 24mm though) anyway, I currently shot with a G6 making music videos and youtube stuff, but I do occasionally shoot higher end stuff. Do i trade in the G6 (and pray it then doesn't get hacked the week after) and trade up to the GH3, or stick with the G6?

I like the weather sealing feature, and the higher bitrates, but i'll miss peaking...

I read somewhere that the GH3 has a smaller sensor - is this right?

Will i see a big jump in quality? And if not is this deal too good to miss?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Great lens, little distortion, sharp with good contrast. This lens comes to life as most do around F4-8, but can be pushed either way and still produce a nice image. If your a m4/3rds shooter, I would go for it in that mount to do away with an adapter due to the size. This lens is smooth with a follow focus, although for this vid, I shot it stock, focus was all done in hand.

What camera/ lenses for action https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9632/what-camera-lenses-for-action Sat, 15 Feb 2014 16:07:36 +0000 Duly_noted 9632@/talks/discussions I am a stuntman and free runner looking for a good camera for video and some stills. I have never used a dslr or M43 for any great length of time. I need 1080 p and 60 fps for slow motion. In my price range I'm looking at the Panasonic G6 or the new Nikon D3300. I'm having trouble deciding and was wondering if anyone with the G6 has experience shooting sports video with it. Also what glass would you recommend? Most shots will be during the day in Texas sun. At least one with shallow depth of field for some artistic shots and a wide angle. Should I get the kit on Amazon with the 14-42mm and add from there? I saw some people recommending cannon lenses, cheap but good I think. Which camera do you think would have better video quality in 60 fps? I know that can effect editing with plugins like twixtor.

Thank you for your time, responses, and patience, I am a noob now but hope to be good at this eventually.

G6 or GX7 or...? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9511/g6-or-gx7-or... Fri, 31 Jan 2014 15:48:12 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 9511@/talks/discussions Im planning buy another camera to midyear . But with a budget limit of U$700, with the marketing war I'm not crazy bringing a lot of money for in less than a year and have obsolete equipment.

Currently I have the GH2 with Sanity and a NEX-5N which use 95% for photo still.

The GH2 has a great performance in video, but the latest Lumix issues have improved considerably as the High ISO, less noise. I also interested in 60fps for slow motion; in the GH2 only available in 720p, the NEX let record 60fps in 1080 but the video from Sony isnt as good as Panasonic.

My major candidates are the G6 is a kind of GH2 improved and the glorious focus peaking is a success whether in stills or video. The GX7 having even higher quality (in the level of GH3), I love the design, still photo quality in the level of OMD and NEX . I could not use a monitor for its HDMI output while recording with G6 and GX7, but can via WIFI. Can the GH3 price drops something from here to there, but after having a NEX consider any camera must have focus peaking mandatorily.

Which of them advised me that they see pros and cons in each, or better invest in some good optics for GH2 as 45mm f1.8 as the Zuiko 25mm f1.4 or PanaLeica?

Thanks!

Did a search, only a few things came up... but these are posts from 2011. New cameras pop up all the time etc.

I'm in need of a decent camera that will act as my "C" camera (a backup body, also as my wide-perspective for weddings and other events). Price should be about $400US. What would you suggest?

The cameras I've been looking at are:

  • Lumix GF2
  • Lumix GF3
  • Lumix GX1
  • GoPro Hero 3+ (out of my price range, but it's on the list because I originally considered it)
  • Used GH2 (I can't seem to find any on eBay AU, and other websites have them still sitting on a price of $600+)

Some help here would be great.. as I have looked and looked, but I have no idea what to expect. I just want a camera that slots in with these two cameras but also not break the bank. If it comes with a lens, that is helpful.

Cheers; Daniel
