about that feature film i did with the GH2 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13561/about-that-feature-film-i-did-with-the-gh2 Mon, 17 Aug 2015 02:41:16 +0000 rozroz 13561@/talks/discussions wanted to share this with you guys, and anyone who's into making films, or just interested to hear the story.

if any of you remember, a few years ago i filmed a feature film using the non hack GH2, and made this preliminary basic "Shots" clip:

yea it was 4 years ago. and at the time i had to "bury" it because i felt it failed completely, i showed it to some producers who basically thrashed it and said it was worthless. it was very painful and traumatic experience.

well after 4 years, i suddenly decided to confront the project and see what can be done. i understood 2 things: my vital mistake then, was trying to edit the footage as a feature length, not thinking of the possibility it may not hold 80 minutes as i planned, so the first thing i did, was to cut 30 minutes and make it the best edit i could do. even if it's only 50+ minutes atm, it's still considered "feature length" at festivals, and at least now the film is "tight".

the second thing was the music. i tried composing my own ideas back then, and now it seems it was a mistake, a totally misguided feel for this kind of film once i gathered some new reference music (mostly tension drones, more horror feel), the film started to "work" much better, and this new direction guided me throughout the process. it made me produce a much more creative, efficient, interesting and better product.

so now i know exactly what's needed to complete the film. maybe a 1-2 extra scenes, i hope.

i will now start letting people watch it and see where it leads me. my main goal now is the target this to festivals that my have interest. i hope some producers/distributors here in Israel will now "dig" this film (which is kinda weird, dark, "arthouse" horror film) and help me finish it and sending it to festivals. i will even uses a kickstarter if i'll have to get the rest of the money needed.

anyway, i will be glad to hear your thoughts, experience, tips or any other words ;)

P.S - lucky i didn't sell the GH2. i already put it for sale but was too lazy to sell it.

BMCC EF vs Sony A7s for a feature film with a lot of night shoots? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11517/bmcc-ef-vs-sony-a7s-for-a-feature-film-with-a-lot-of-night-shoots Wed, 08 Oct 2014 02:33:24 +0000 IronFilm 11517@/talks/discussions How does the A7s and the BMCC compare against each other?

Because I've just joined on as the DoP to shoot a feature on a BMCC, but given the nature of the film (shooting most of the time late at night), am wondering if a Sony A7s is better.

Am curious about some direct comparisons between an A7S and a BMCC at night, and how they'd be able to grade, and how they'd be used in practise with lighting set ups (as if we can use a smaller lighting kit, that might help mitigate some of the cost of an A7S), their look, etc.

As if so, I might then recommend to the director trying to find space in the tiny budget to switch to a Sony A7S instead.

What I really wish Sony would do is make something like an A7S version of the Sony A5100. So perhaps an APS-C version with merely a 5 megapixel sensor and the same amazing low light performance as the A7S but with the cheap price of the A5100!

As I don't need a "full frame" sensor, neither do I need more than 5 megapixels so as to have enough for 4K video. I'm content with 1080p.(after all, even with the A7s, most are not shooting 4K because it doesn't do internal 4K)

Unfortunately I don't think a 5 megapixel camera would go down well at all with the typical 2014 consumer, even though I've shot plenty with my old Nikon D50 which was only 6 megapixels. So I think 5 megapixels would do just fine for casual photography, especially as it would be a very very good 5 megapixels. (plus of course I wouldn't be getting it for photography, but video)

GH2 feature film https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10748/gh2-feature-film Tue, 08 Jul 2014 10:51:51 +0000 mangotree72 10748@/talks/discussions Hi everybody - I just wanted to show you a trailer from our feature film shot on the GH2 - I used mainly an olympus 50mm. It is a very low budget movie, but comes in at 82 mins. I used the same patch as Musgo - I threw this trailer together and added the Musgo trailer music for fun. We're having some music written for the trailer so I can officially release it.

It took three weeks and some weekends to make - I know there are better examples of cinematography and imagery - but I love using the GH2 and was more than happy to use it for the film. Where it will go and end up - I don't know. Just glad I saw it through.

I'm not asking for shares or anything - just wanted to show that we used a GH2 and it never let me down.

Cheers.

It's bloody, noir, full of intrigue, and still missing a title.

Upstream Color - Hacked Gh2 Success - Case Study https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7889/upstream-color-hacked-gh2-success-case-study Sun, 25 Aug 2013 04:26:27 +0000 goanna 7889@/talks/discussions The cinema release of this movie deserves its own thread: it's no longer merely a Sundance entry or a good point earned as an SLR camera's entry to feature films, but finally we have a film getting real reviews by film reviewers. Hardly any critic uses the word "indy" or refers to the "look" of the hacked GH2. They go on the journey! Like Shane Carruth's film or not, they're talking about it in film terms: the story, the actors...

This, folks, is a coming-of-age of our il' baby, the hacked GH2!

One way to put it is like this: we now have a benchmark; an aesthetic which we know works, at least with a particular kind of movie genre. Now, some of us might like to take a closer look at every aspect of how Upstream Color was lit, shot and post-produced - and slavishly replicate this in every way with another script. Sounds stupid and un-creative, but that's exactly how film completion insurers and financiers like it!

Mission: Learn how to create and avoid GH2 visual hangups.

Setup: Flowmotion 2.02 24H Sony Vegas 12 (Basic Editing) External Recording setup utilizing Booming and Wireless

Concerns (How to cause it) (How to Avoid)

Vignetting:

Banding:

Judder:

ISO Bug (I am well versed on that one)

Not too concerned with shooting flat. Going to be lighting things pretty close to how I want them. No really dark scenes.

Action:

Hand to hand combat, A foot chase, Driving, but will use green screen and Go Pro for that.

Feature trailer for YES NO YES YES GO https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6369/feature-trailer-for-yes-no-yes-yes-go Sun, 10 Mar 2013 12:05:20 +0000 prorevolution 6369@/talks/discussions Hi,

So we're doing what we've coined "reverse-crowdfunding"...we put up the money for the film first and are now using the legitimacy of IndieGoGo to clear debt/deferred payments and distribute by offering a pay-what-you-want download for backers.

Our feature was really low budget, but feels and looks very relevant...especially to someone in their 20s....but you be the judge. I'm interested to hear what people think of this strategy. Surely we'll make lots of mistakes & learn a lot, let me be the guinea pig.

Here's our links:

Thanks for feedback & opinions...we've never quite seen anyone go about distribution this way before...

PTTools Feature Request - Camera/Owner ID https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3029/pttools-feature-request-cameraowner-id Fri, 27 Apr 2012 06:36:16 +0000 duartix 3029@/talks/discussions Would it be simple to have some kind of personal digital signature available as a hack parameter?

Something that would make it to every photo you took via EXIF information. I think it would be very useful if we could use PTTools to define a small text signature (ex: "This camera belongs to John Doe, 1000 - Planet Earth, North Pole: john_doe@earth.org").

This way, if your body gets stolen and assuming there is a 50% chance that it ends in hack ignorant hands, you have a meaningful chance to see some traces of it surfacing the Web in the form of pictures taken with that camera.

P.S. - I posted here because my searches for feature requests threads were fruitless.

Anyone know what happened to it?
