So rather than hijacking other threads and adding to the clutter, I've decided to start a ColorGHear thread as a more centralized place to handle questions, suggestions, demos videos (mine and yours), and other concerns.

So as not to be misleading, ColorGHear is an add-on of MODULAR PRESETS, and not a true plug-in.

The toolkit isn't just a collection of drag and drop "looks." It is a series of modular presets, or nodes, specially designed to contend with the codec limitations native to HDSLR footage. The Final Dance - Touches of Color (2012) - GH2 short film

Hi people,

I wanted to share this film with you to get some real critics from you. I'm active on a Swedish forum already and usually put my films over there to get some feedback but I wanted to hear your opinions as well.

The film is a school project I had, and I wanted to make a short film where I could really show my color grading. So even though I directed, edited and made the vfx in this video, I did it almost only to show my grading skills to then have something to show post companies as a portfolio after my graduation, which was a few weeks ago.

What do you think is good, what can I've been doing better?

I was using GH2, Orion v4b, Nostalgic (-2-2-2-2). Lens was Samyang 35mm 1.4.

Software used was After Effects CS5.5, Premiere Pro CS5.5, Twixtor, DaVinci Resolve. Converted all my files to Cineform .MOV before editing.

Adobe Subcription Plans?

Background music, jingles, loops, scoring, fx etc

А friend of mine introduced me to Apple Logic which has a great loops/fx/jingles library. All sorted by genres, bmp, moods etc. I find it a very convenient construction set for quickly creating music for video needs.

I'm looking for a PC alternative. I use Vegas for video, Cubase for music, but since I'm no longer in audio production I find Cubase being way too complex instrument for my basic video needs. I don't want to program custom drum loops and create midi score from scratch, tweak EQs and FX for hours - all I need is a quickie-bricky loop based construction toy where I can drop few loops and pre-made fx on a timeline to create a jingle for an advert for instance.

Any recommendations? Few years ago I checked Sony Cinescore before it got discontinued and SonicFire but I found them to be not as elegant as Logic. Any progress in this realm ever since?

Blocky DVX100 footage when imported into PPro or AE

OK, so this is a bit of a blast from the past. I was trying to import some old SD footage from my trusty old DVX100 and in Premiere Pro (CS5 and 5.5) and After Effects (CS5.5) I'm getting nasty blocky artefacts, primarily in the red channel. I don't see these artefacts in VLC though. I've got the footage interpreted correctly (Progressive)... really starting to pull my hair out!

Has anyone got any ideas?!

Which framerate to mix 24p and HBR25/30 footage?

I'm planning to do a comparison of various video modes and shutter speeds and I'd like in the end to export one video that mixes thge following material:

24p footage @ 2fps that will be speed up 13x
24p footage @ 2.5fps that will be speed up 10x
HBR30 footage @ 2.5fps that wil be speed up 12x
HBR25 footage @ 5fps that wil be speed up 5x

How should I handle this in After Effects?

How to down-sample with motion blur 60 fps framerate to 30 fps?

I know this isn't specifically a GH2-related question, but I've seen a lot expertise on this forum and thought someone might know how to do this. I've searched online but can't find anything relevant.

I've got some computer generated video at 60 fps (and higher framerates up to 120 fps) which I would like to convert to standard 30 fps, with motion blur derived from blending the intermediate frames.

Specifically, my question is, is there an After Effects or (preferably) Apple Motion plugin that does this correctly? Or some utility software like MPEG StreamClip?

To be clear, I don't want to change the playback speed of the video, just blend intermediate frames to simulate footage shot at a lower frame rate and corresponding shutter speed.

[edit] - on a hunch, I just checked the export options in StreamClip. There are "frame blending" and "better downscaling" options in the "Frame Rate" section. Does anyone have experience with using these for the purpose I described? Specifically wha's on my mind is, if downscaling a high frame rate video (e.g. 120 fps) to 30 fps, are ALL intermediate frames used in the blending? And in what proportion?

I have this vid of a violinist and I would like to add some flames coming out of the violin at the end of the video where the music gets fast, sort of a riff on Witches of Eastwick. Does anyone know of a plugin for premiere pro that will do this, or do I have to video some fire and track it in? TIA.

After Effects from a N00b

We shot part of our first short film earlier last year as a bit of an exercise for learning film making. The rushes were adequate in quality, but there were things all over the place that were wrong...and still are :-). Oh, and we're doing the acting ourselves for now, as we don't have the heart to involve anyone who can even remotely act, to our amateur film crew. This exercise has put us a few steps closer to feeling more confident however.

Anyway, in an effort over Christmas, having a little time to myself, I decided to embark on learning a bit more about After Effects. And what better footage to work on than our incomplete short. We'd done a few edits and quick grades, but nothing serious, so now was the time.

First of all, the script called for this to be set at night time, and we'd shot in the daylight. Plus, there was supposed to be a character that magically appears in the garage, and we'd left the bloody side door open! We also wanted to add some form of special effects, knowing full well it would look cheesy, we just didn't want it to look like we'd drawn them on with crayons.

I've put together a few screencasts of our learning process and what we did, and I just thought they might be useful to anyone that is very new to all of this. These are by no means tutorials though, just commentary around what we did, why and our learning experience.

As a director, I'm sick on waiting months for some VFX artist to do my effects for my films; gunshots, explosions etc it would save time and money if I could learn how to do my own after effects. So I was looking around the Internet when I found this,

Is it easy I use for someone like me with no after effects experience ( but is willing to learn)

Is it worth the $250?

Is Motion 5 (SmoothCam) in Final cut pro compared to warp stabilizer in after effects

Is it doing the same thing? Which one is better? SmoothCam or warp stabilizer? I find the warp stabilizer pretty good but would like to stay in FCPX with motion instead, should i buy motion 5?

What settings to use in post for Final cut pro X and After Effects???

When I'm done shooting I take the SD card put it in my macbook pro and open Final cut pro X. how should I import?? there are a few settings like apple pro244 and so on?

Then I edit my project. when I'm happy I want to send it to after effects to add some motion stabilizer and magic bullet looks cause FCPX can't handle looks yet. Now should I export it full size?? ok then I get it in AE C5.5 (this time the file was 1,8 Gb). I do my things but its extremely slow cause of the big file.

then I export it again and put it in FCPX again to add music and then I export it to vimeo (this time the file is 10,5 Gb?????).

I feel I'm not doing the right thing files are huge and the computer is suffering :).

would be nice if you (or someone) could describe a step by step how to do it!

Bitrate and render times

Just an FYI really - which I guess is perhaps kinda obvious - test your entire work flow when you're trying out different bit rates in the hack! I've previously had no trouble at all with the stock 24Mbps, but I've hit a wall with 88Mbps. It's workable in Premiere Pro, but my After Effects renders become completely disk and memory bound and the rendering times increase dramatically. (Keep in mind that PPro is using a different rendering engine to AE).

Anyway, just something to keep in mind! I'm off to test bitrates and drive configurations to find out what's best suited to my post-production setup.
