I can't for the life of me remember the title, and can't seem to dig it up through searches - so hoping someone might be able to help.

It is a slow-paced film, no narration, just simple, clean compositions of russian soldiers in between combat in Afghanistan. 4:3 format as I remember. Not much in music or dialogue either. Very quiet and beautiful film.

Anybody have an idea?

GH5 photojournalism in PARIS "Revolution" https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/22081/gh5-photojournalism-in-paris-revolution Sun, 19 May 2019 09:39:14 +0000 eurocameraman 22081@/talks/discussions Since 6 months, demonstration against government and neo-liberalim politics are taking place allover France every Saturday, know as Yellow vest protest.

This means 27 weeks of street demonstration with, violence from both sides and repression is now out of limits with new laws allowing abusive arrests and violence with hundreds of severely wounded protesters. However, protesters are not willing to give up.

I personally followed 14th of those events in Paris, as photojournalist. I own a wide range of cameras such as Nikon D750, Nikon D5500, Sony A7M2 and GH5.

After different test and try, I decided to stick to the GH5 as I can easily switch from photos to videos. Also, having more depth of field at wide aperture is an advantage in this kind of environment.

I just wanted to share some of my shots, to show what M43 can do in a difficult working surrounding.

I am using Lumix lenses : 7-14 mm f/4, 12-35 mm f/2.8, 35-100 mm f/2.8, 100 - 300 mm f/4-5.6

Update: I created a Flickr Album here with 118 pictures, most of them with explicative caption : https://www.flickr.com/gp/eurocameraman/kH0H7X

The family has some unique media we could use, but would more likely would need to use different resources that are available outside the family. More likely will also talk to an attorney this week, but like to get some input from filmmakers here who may have used that type of media before /Thanks for any input

In my opinion, there's more to that than meets the eye. This is the story of Latvian outdoor lifestyle photographer Filips Baumanis.

This is me attempting story-driven filmmaking for the first time, as previously I've mostly done landscape and travel content (a seen on www.eaglewoodfilms.com). Shot on the trusty Sony A6500 and Phantom 4 Pro for aerials. Did all the shooting, editing, grading and sound design myself.

Interview shots in documentaries https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15906/interview-shots-in-documentaries Wed, 19 Oct 2016 01:39:04 +0000 inqb8tr 15906@/talks/discussions For people that frequently shoot this kind of footage, it could be useful to share interesting interview shots from documentaries in this topic, discuss them and get inspiration and ideas for our work. Something like a reference database.

Interesting in terms of lighting, composition, and general cinematographic approach - how does it relate to the story, characters, atmosphere

Let me start with some random examples,

Man on Wire (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155592/

Interview with the main guy in the film is done in very minimalistic way. He emerges from the darkness, just like his story unravels from his memory, presented in very suspenseful manner.

http://imgur.com/lglkTFe

X-ray Audio

This is very good documentary about production and distribution of 'prohibited' records cut onto x-ray sheets in USSR times. Really interesting topic and characters. The film features interviews with people who were involved in that seemingly crazy actions back in the days. Interviews show their passion and determination despite the danger they put themselves into. But they are also very funny and original characters:

This man surrounded with bunch of items that directly correlate to his story:

http://imgur.com/rf3nLGo

Or this guy filmed on location that bring us to the atmosphere of back alleys where 'trades' usually took place. I particularly like the light setup of this one:

Just few examples for now, but hopefully this can grow.

There's a ton of info in the crowdfunding link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/invisible-hand#/story there's only a few hrs left in the campaign so if you dig the topic every pledge takes us closer making this our best production from Public Herald to date. Here's the trailer, mostly GH4 field shots, except for the opening blue street scene (shot on hacked GH2 w/ driftwood 88mbs). Audio is mostly Rode NTG2 & NTG3. Much love to personal-view who's always been a valuable resource for our team.

Any feedback would be great! This film asks the question, "If a corporation can have rights, why not an ecosystem?" And we're documenting the collision between the free market and democracy, out of which the rights of nature has been born...so in a way, capitalism could be creating its own death.

Secure storage solution on a travelling documentary shooting https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8931/secure-storage-solution-on-a-travelling-documentary-shooting Sun, 01 Dec 2013 00:40:29 +0000 gameb 8931@/talks/discussions Early 2014 I will be shooting a documentary and travelling in Central America for about 2-3 months. I have two 2TB Western Digital USB 3.0 External hard drives, for storage and backing up copy on the go. But I was thinking, that after lets say 1 week, I will have so much important footage that it would be a desaster to loose any of it. Literally anything could happen in these countries.

I can see 3 options:

  1. Having somewhere in the region a central backup point, where I would take the footage and back it up every 1-2 weeks. But that will cost me a lot of money and time.
  2. Uploading somewhere in the cloud... The problem is, that the internet is very basic over there and also I don't know if its possible to upload this amount of data to any cloud-provider, lets say anywhere between 30-50 GB per day average.
  3. Hoping that nothing would happen and hiding always one of the hard drives far away from the other... Very risky. Anybody has some ideas?

Best camera for a documentary project? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13008/best-camera-for-a-documentary-project- Tue, 19 May 2015 20:48:24 +0000 tomasawyer 13008@/talks/discussions Hello everyone.

I will potentially be shooting a 'documentary-style' like shoot for a client that wants his house to be documented over the period of one year. As of now it is still a building site and the house's outer structure is almost done. The client wants the show to be stylised in the style of 'Grand Designs'.

I currently have a Lumix GH4 with 14-35 F2.8 lens.

I also still have a Sony HDR-FX1E from past projects.

The client does not care about 4K option and would want the final product be in 1080 anyway.

Might be a silly question but what camera should I use from those two? I don't want to shoot 1080 on the GH4 and the 4K transcoding and editing in 1080 would be painful especially for a project this long (and the size of the footage and backups would be exponentially bigger)

There is also a budget for a possibility to buy a new camera just for this project - any recommendations?

Thanks!

Animate Photos and Create a Parallax Shift https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11820/animate-photos-and-create-a-parallax-shift Fri, 21 Nov 2014 16:10:28 +0000 goanna 11820@/talks/discussions

Doubtless, you’ve seen it dozens of times: a still photograph within a video that somehow manages to appear three-dimensional. It displays depth, varying planes of motion, and perhaps even animated particles or lighting effects.

http://blog.visual.ly/the-2-5d-effect-how-to-animate-photos-and-create-a-parallax-shift/

This effect is often used in documentary films when they do not have film of an event, but only still-frames. Using the effect makes the image more interesting, and makes it seems like someone was there with a video camera and was panning back and forth.

We are now going to Italy through France and then — Greece.

If you guys have time/ideas and enthusiasm please don't hesitate to contact our crew.

As our previous experience showed nobody knows the situation better than the folks on the ground.

What we are looking for are people's stories, characters, plots, stories which can tell us something new/unusual about the current crisis.

Use this chance!!!

SOLD: GH2 + Fujinon B4 ENG/Documentary Kit https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7727/sold-gh2-fujinon-b4-engdocumentary-kit Thu, 08 Aug 2013 22:31:53 +0000 BobbyMcDonald 7727@/talks/discussions Selling my trusty GH2 basic kit. This setup has covered the large majority of my video needs for awhile now, but trying to raise some extra cash for Burning Man, and cleaning out the old camera shelf. The camera is in great shape and comes with: 1 GH2 (obviously) grey, hacked (can return firmware to stock or any patch on request) 3 Panasonic batteries, all keep full charge, 1 Panasonic charger like new, 1 64GB Sandisk Pro Extreme SD card - this is the king, what you need for driftwood's and others top shelf patches. Has yet to fail me. 1 Fujinon Pegasus III B4 lens w/ rubber hood and hand brace 1 Cieco7 B4 -> m4/3 adapter with tripod mount 1 77mm circular polarizer, uv filter and homemade vari-nd

Everything is in great working order, and good to great cosmetically. The lens covers the equivalent of 31mm-438mm, a 14x range! This lens is a legend and a workhorse, not clinically sharp, but still holds great detail, especially in the center... a great match to the super sharp GH2. Comes with hand mount and the power zoom should work fine if hooked up to a 12v power source.

I'd prefer to sell as a set, but would be willing to part it out if the lens were to sell first. Asking $885

I'll get pics up tomorrow, I'm happy to answer any questions.

Thanks.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera ENG style! https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7825/blackmagic-cinema-camera-eng-style Mon, 19 Aug 2013 04:31:22 +0000 plegilink 7825@/talks/discussions Check out this excellent blog post by Marco Solorio about how he's using the BMCC (ideally MFT version) as an ENG style camera... I have very interested in this

Having had the original Cinema Camera EF for about a year now (since before its public release), I’ve had the opportunity to use the camera in countless situations; jibs, dollies, cranes, sliders, glidecams, various interior/exterior car mounts, and of course, handheld and shoulder mount. The latter has been a little tricky to develop, but with a little ingenuity, a few components, and a drill, I have what I feel is a very capable ENG style rig for the Cinema Camera.

image

Using this rig I built for shooting our BMW documentary film is incredibly functional. I’m able to combine the powerful image quality the Cinema Camera delivers (12-bit RAW, ProRes HQ, and DNxHD), along with the flexibility an ENG camera provides.

It is about a guy here in Stockholm who is called "The Magnetist" because he is obsessed with cassette tapes. I used a pair of GH2s and Voigtlander 25mm and SLR Magic 12mm, a cheap chinese 35mm cctv lens and a Konica Hexanon 135mm vintage lens in two shots. I also converted the files with 5D2RGB to get rid of the diagonal rain pattern in Premiere.

"THE MAGNETIST is a short documentary about Micke, also known as 'The Magnetist', whose life revolves around cassette tapes.

Most of Micke's time is spent on varius tape-related projects; he blogs about them, he makes music with them and he got a monthly tape club in his hometown Stockholm. Sometimes it's a struggle. Here we get an insight to Micke's life as a tapeologist and joins him to his tape-only club to find out the motivation behind his interest."

Does anyone have problems watching since it's in 1080p, I'm not sure if some computers might struggle?

Wilting Flowers, Fading Songs: A Documentary Project about a tribe from the Western Himalayas https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7533/wilting-flowers-fading-songs-a-documentary-project-about-a-tribe-from-the-western-himalayas Tue, 16 Jul 2013 12:23:28 +0000 feonn 7533@/talks/discussions Hi there! In the last 3 years I've been involved in documenting the oral traditions of a very small ethnic community in Ladakh, India near the border with Pakistan. Much of the work was done on self funding until now, but this time not possible :/ so we started an Inidegogo campaign - http://igg.me/at/fadingsongs

They are called "Brokpa" (aka 'Highlander' - a bit neglectful name given by the Ladakhis) and are quiet popular nowadays with tourist because of their aryan origin, Mediterranean features and gorgeous traditional dresses and ornaments. But no one knows a bit about their culture, as they are not documented at all and local government is treating them quiet bad also!

The problem is that they are less than 2000 in population and due to the impact of modernisation and sensitive politic situation with Pakistan and China, all their traditions are very rapidly diminishing... Nowadays they are kept only by a very few members from the older generation with not much hope to be passed to the younger one :( This will very soon lead to an irretrievable loss of identity :/

I saw it myself and that was my biggest motivation for starting this documentary project. The idea is to make at the end a series of short documentaries and bring all of them along with music recordings and research papers online accessible for everyone and to the community as well. We've managed to do much of this work, but still need one more really extensive fieldwork (~50 days on spot or two and a half months the whole trip).

This thread is not really to ask for money (though every $ will be welcome :p) but just to let you know about this. It will be much appreciated if you could spread the word about the campaign, share it etc. As you know campaign fundings depends very much on clicks and activity... so a bowing thanks for every share! - http://igg.me/at/fadingsongs

The above footage was shot in 2011 when we had a 5d mkii and a GH13. It's a quick edit, as much of the footage and audio are still being edited. This year I have a GH3 (really hope for a hack soon) + some minolta md glass and SLR magic 25mm & 12mm and a BMPC if I'm lucky enough to get it before 15th September. The audio will be on a Marantz 661 + NT-4 and NTG-2 with lots of batteries. They don't have electricity yet in those villages, so we had to charge all batteries and laptop on the solar panels of the locals. That was very time consuming and it's another reason we decided to try to raise some more money to cover a generator.

I'm be happy for any feedback, suggestions and support! If you know new budget ways to charge in the field, please let me know!

PROJECT SUMMARY:
For 20 years (1993-2013), I got used to go with my girlfriends to New York, and set my love memories on film...
WOMANHATTAN is a film from my point of view as an obsessive director: the obsession of filming my girlfriends in New York, the obsession of magnifying them, the technological obsession of finding the camera shots that best reflected my feelings.
WOMANHATTAN is a trip back in time, before and after 9/11, where I take us to the heart of New York and its urban landscapes, my thoughts on the passing of time, on love and the possibility of being free one day from my obsessions, and living fully the present and my love life. It's a small personal film I shot December last year. I tried to use as little resources as possible and focus on the emotional side.

The second short came about when I first saw the author Ivan Dimitrov, during a literary reading called "The Homeless on Sunday" held at a hostel in Sofia, Bulgaria. He seemed to live on his own terms and I hope I made at least a bit interesting character-driven documentary.
