DIY "remote" focus control (accurate, LEGO!)

Okay, so this is not a particularly clever invention, but it actually works and is quite useful, which makes it worth sharing. :)

Now, I've had an idea in my head for quite a while now; remotely controlling a DSLR's lens' focus ring using (I don't know the proper word) 'motor mirroring'. Basically using one motor as the "generator", and the other to control the focus. So it happens that I found my LEGO and made my idea! Really pleased with how it turned out, so I thought I'd make a video demonstrating it and to show it to everyone here, as I think it's of interest to the people who browse these forums.

It's pretty useful for me personally, because of my shooting style. If you have LEGO, try and build yourself one. Mine took an hour, but I'm sure if one was to invest more time a better device could be created!

"Hacking" my gear with Sugru

We all know the word "hack" is synonymous on this thread (with good cause) but I've also discovered something called Sugru (www.sugru.com) - a sort of moldable silicone that turns rock hard after 24 hours. Their tagline is "Hack Things Better". It's really fun stuff and I've used it to repair, modify or improve my gear.

The Trusmt cage - which I got through the generous deal through PP - was not tall enough to fit my GH2 setup so I stuck two spare rods on top of the existing ones to raise it up
Here I use coins (best thing I can think of!) to create some anti-twist plates) for the Ownuser GH2 battery grip
Stuck a Sony battery adapter onto the back of my monitor
Made the grip on my broadcast zoom lens a little more ergonomical for me
Replaced a lost screw & knob for my matte box
Added an extra cold shoe mount on the Modula 3 rig. Edelkrone sells cold shoe adapters at a ridiculous US$60 each!
Molded more grip on my tiny NEX-5N (ran out of black)

Got a few packs left so still thinking of ways to hack!

Ok, I made a quick tutorial on how to make a Matte Box that looks semi-professional. I know alot of you like to buy the high dollar items but for those who dont mind building one for about $ 2 dollars here is a good option and no this isnt using some sort of plastic bottle. Also included a tutorial i did for the dead cat which is the easiest ive seen on the internet and the best looking ..IMHO.

Hallo everyone
its my first post here.
I have my DIY rig which id like to upgrade. In using a bigger manfrotto plates and adapters 357. Im looking for a part like in this video 0.15

regular 15-60mm rods mount with possibility to fit manfrotto 357 plate adapter. Id like to have same quick realise on rig, tripod etc.
can you recommend something?

Sun hood for monitor, ideas?

Hey guys, i was at a shoot some days ago where there was a tv logic portable monitor.
It had a sun hood, and i thought i could make one of my own, for the cheap 10" hdmi monitor recommended by vitaliy.

My Question is: Does anyone have an idea, which material best to make the sides of? The tv logic ones have something like nylon-wrapped cardboard/plastic on the sides and top. thanks :)

Aside from being a bit tense thinking this guy will eventually cut himself with the knife, I think he has a good idea on how to make inexpensive, semi permanent, professional looking lens gears on the cheap. Just don't cut yourself making them :)

Kaydara is a fanfilm inside the matrix universe, made mostly by two french directors, what was supposed to be a two month shortfilm end up in six years of work for a film of an entire hour, good special fx, with no budget at all but tons of hard work, interesting tips in the two hour making of for those shooting guerrila DIY style.

Hello i´m starting this thread for those interesting in DIY gear can post some useful advices and their own DIY equipment
(speccially @bkmcwd :) and his lovelly DIY glidecam)

well here is mine snorricam, really straightforward (i don´t think i should place any instructions :P),
-2 wood surfaces (one square for the back and a circled one for the front (diameter must be at least a third of the entire lenght of the camera arm, to make a stable triangle))
-3 velcro strips
-2 elastic bands (optional)
-arm from a security camera (this one is the trick, in fact i actually manage to find an arm that can be extended by adding other tubes (look at the second picture, those are two different tubes, so this is a matter of looking in the stores the one most suitable))
-and screws
