DIY Blimp for less than £20

After realizing that a good BLIMP is more about the knowledge and theory, rather than the actual construction materials, I'm embarking on a construction of my own blimp for less than £20. This will hold my cheap chinese microphone EM-320E, which is still on its way. My inspiration came from here:

. So whatever advice you can give me on how to improve my design, it would be greatly appreciated, and hopefully will help others later on. These are the materials that I'll be using:

Bird feeder (£3) - to make the frame. Length 33cm. Diameter 6cm (the cage is metal, but not too robust. I might replace it with a much tougher mesh from one of those metal mesh bins http://www.ebay.com/itm/190683027361)
2 round tea strainers (£3) for the FRONT and BACK end caps
2 plastic jars with diameter 6cm (£2) - I will cut off the caps so as to make both end caps of the blimp to easily screw onto the frame

Micro fiber cloth OR nylon stockings (£1) - this will go inside the birdfeeder, after the fine mesh
6 Rubber bands (£0) - to hold the mic inside the bird feeder in X pattern

I will just saw the ends of these fluffies together, to make them into "bags". They are 40cm long, so should hold the entire blip pretty nicely. If you can find any better material on eBay please post a link.

So what do you think? Will it work?

I'm especially concerned with a small (6cm) diameter of the birdfeeder, but I hope that adding the fine mesh should supplement that like in this video

Or am I wrong?

I am interested in discussing possible DIY setups for an affordable ($500 or less) motor-based camera stabilization system. Most likely this will use a combination of gimbals, gyros, brushless motors and some controller. However, I think there is potential of at least discussing the combination of of rack pinion gear system instead of gimbals for stabilizing 3-axis movment (X, Y, Z).

TOPIC RULES:

Don't put people down for asking basic questions. I am new to this knowledge area too (with no experience using RC multicopters).
Encourage creative thinking. Perhaps stabilizing cameras handheld requires/deserves a different approach than tech used on multicopters.

I am reserving this post as a summary of "good/feasible" ideas.

BMMCC Angle HDMI Clamp Lock Kit Module

Motorized timelapse options for varavon slider?

Hey PV! Are there any options/alternatives to the motoroid/timeroid for the varavon sliders (specifically v800)? Are there other brands/systems that work ?

I'm mainly wondering about the Konova Motorized Kit B that comes with the crank as well. It seems a better value and can be upgraded as I go.

(He doesn't talk about how to attach it to the carriage at all, I'm thinking of buying the varavon weight pulley because it has a plate that fits)

Just found this interesting DIY monitor kits at aliexpress.com $217.55 There is also 5.9 inch models with 1440*2560 resolution. Wonder if it accepts 1080p signal from Panasonic GH and Blackmagic cameras. Have no idea how to control brightness, color temp and other settings :)

I'm trying to build a small dolly cart, I have several pieces, but there is something I cant get. Is the axes system it comes with toy cars, garden cars and another work cars. I put some yellow arrows on the piece or two component parts, they make the wheels can turn on.

My idea is my dolly car can make circular movement so. But I dont get on amazon and ebay, it comes. I think may be Im "lost in translation", i write "axi for gorilla cart", ""axi for trolley cart" etc and the result is the car. Some idea?

DIY Fresnel LED lights

LED lights are awesome, save you a LOT of hassle on location, and are dropping in prices. At the same time the good old ARRI fresnel tungsten lighting gives you that beautiful cinematic lighting - so beautiful and easy to control that you might want to put up with all the hassle and cost that they involve.

So I thought: would it be possible to combine best of both worlds? Would it be possible to have LED lights which also work as a Fresnel lights? Then I found out that this is the newest cutting edge thing that ARRI offers in it’s L-series, and LightPanels is releasing its own early models too, and they cost tens of thousands of dollars!

I wonder if I can make it DIY?

After all it shouldn’t be that difficult. I thought of getting a 312ASZ led panel (which, correct me if I'm wrong should give me a 250W equivalent) and sticking one of those plastic Fresnel lenses that old people use to read newspapers. DIY Follow Focus

So after discovering mention of these jar openers that may be a nice way of getting a zero budget follow focus setup I decided to order a bunch of them to play with (the international delivery was slow and expensive, so it made sense to get a few instead of just one).

It came last week and this weekend i've managed to spend an hour or two fiddling with it and making up a super cheap and nasty looking setup that sort of looks functional for stops that you judge by eye rather than hard stops that stop you. There's a super quick video of its operation here

Very much version 1 that looks super cheap, but i think will do for now. I'm looking for improvements on the marker attached to or under the jar opener, as well as the markers themselves, along with the possibility of hard stops.

Free and easy way to make your camera’s strap detachable

Since some time I’ve wanted to leave my camera without the strap but I also wanted to be able to re-strap it back again in a fast way. There are plenty commercial aplications that fulfill this need/wish but is much more fun create your own. This one I called LaZZo and is a design my brother and I developed. Unfortunately I didn’t take any documentation during the creation of the concept – many many hours of talking and exchanging groundbreaking ideas and personal experiences to then draw, first by hand then in computer 3d modeling software, renders of possible outputs, to follow rigorous anatomic and ergonomic tests – or process of making of it – even harder team work.

On the other hand being a fairy simple system, the only thing you’ll need is 1/2 a meter of a strong string/line/rope. We used a military grade one that AM had, you can also go with mountain line or kevlar… the stiffer the hardest to get loose. The only thing is that has to be strong enough and fit into your camera shackle

2.5mm Angled Stereo Plug DIY for the GH2

I could never find a 2.5mm angled stereo plug. The only other alternative to the regular straight plug which stick out of the camera and could potentially snap while inside the camera, is the 3.5/2.5 angled adapter. I found these adapters to be quite dangerous because they sometimes can loose contact and therefore are not very reliable. So I assembled my own version which works perfectly.

These two plugs are quiet standard i've seen them in shops and on ebay, easy to find and cheap. Make sure that the "golden" plug fits strongly into the GH2 plug to make a reliable contact.

Take the interior part of the golden plug and the exterior part of the silver plug, bend the interior of the golden plug or just cut it off so it fits the the shape of the silver plug.

Fit the golden interior part into the exterior silver part of the plug, so that the little "minidisc" (red arrow) of the golden plug is outside, if not it doesn't make contact. Sorry - I just realized that the exterior angled silver plug has a plastic inside whith which you fix the cable. I forgot to put it into the photo. But obviously that helps a lot the stability of the plug.

DIY Adaptor for GH2/FZ200 battery to power USB of GoPro 3

The internal battery in my GoPro 3 only powers the camera and LCD for about an hour. I need longer shoots than that, so I built a lightweight (38 gram / 1.3oz) adaptor to allow me to use my spare FZ200 / GH2 batteries to power the camera via its USB power input. A single BLC12 battery runs the GoPro/ Touch-LCD combo at 2.7K-cine protune for about 2 hrs before the internal battery kicks in for another hour. Together the GoPro 3 will now run at 2.7K for 3 hrs, long enough to fill the 64GB SDXC cards I am using :)

I used an LM3485 3Amp switching regulator evaluation board because 1) I had one lying around, and 2) they are nearly 100% efficient, and don't get warm. The battery holder is a tray from a BLC12 charger I bought off Ebay, and the LED voltage display is also off Ebay (it draws a negligible 10ma and allows you to guesstimate how much battery charge is left). Photos of the rig below.

It would be much easier to just have bought an external USB battery pack, but they are heavy and bulky. This way I get double use out of the batteries I already carry around with my rig.

Custom LED Filter

I recently purchased the Amaran 160 LED and so far it's working great. The only complaint I have is the color output. This particular LED has a strong magenta tint that's very apparent when I use it as a fill light in daylight situations. During my search to find an affordable solution, I stumbled across this. Basically, the guy made his own filters by printing colors onto transparencies.

I know it's not too expensive to buy a pack of these filters, but with this method, I can print out any filter I want and cut out whatever size I need from it. Here's a short video I put together to show how some of these custom filters work.

DIY motor and motor pwm speed controller how ?

I need to find information on about what motor can work 0.1 to 10 rpm (or more) with at least 7.2V (Sony npf battery) and to be strong in order to rotate or move at least 5-10 weight ... This should be with PWM controllable speed motor ... Found some speed controllers on eBay but don't know what motor to choose. Any suggestion is welcome ...

Anamorphic loupe?

Basically it would be like a normal lcd finder/loupe that optically decompresses the image taken with an anamorphic adapter or lens. For eg. useful when you can't or don't want to use a monitor.

Is there such a thing? I don't think so, or at least I could not find it.

Do you think that something like that would be practical and useful for anamorphic shooting?

Someone here tried to make guerrilla anamorphic adapter, a loupe would be easier to build and perhaps even to sell.

Just an idea :)

DIY Boompole Case

Nice! Since I have a rather pricey carbon-fiber boom pole that I want to protect when transporting I am totally going to implement this guy's design - except that I am going to add some 1 cm foam, cut its width to the inner diameter of the PVC pipe and push it through so that I have a good cushion for the boom pole inside. This is a really cheap, rugged and functional design.

How-to: Fix lens to adapter looseness

So I figured out a way to get rid of the looseness between lenses and their adapters. Since most of us use still lenses that tend to fit a little loose in their mounts and then wiggle and move when focused. This can cause the frame to shift slightly and it's very noticeable when rack focusing. I found very thin adhesive PTFE(teflon) sheets that can be cut out to the same shape as the mounting face and used to shim the lens to make a tight fit. I just cut out a piece large enough to cover the face of the mount and then trimmed the PTFE to the OD and ID of the mount face. Teflon is of course very slick and has a bit of pliability to it so that it won't mar the mounting surface of your lens. In any case, I make no warranty about this so do it at your own risk. :)

What I used was .005(PN 2208T21) and .01(PN 2208T111) thick sheets of adhesive PTFE from McMaster-Carr supply:

I'm not sure where you can get sheets of adhesive PTFE in other countries though. I assume there are industrial supply companies that have raw materials like this.

DIY Shotgun Microphone (with in-built shock mount)

Several people have asked me to make a video of how it was done, so I've finally got around to making it. I thought I'd post it here because some of you might find it interesting. Anyway, I'd like to know what you think.

$16 DIY Rig

Anyone who is on a tight budget and really wants to spend their money where it counts might benefit from this. I am not a professional photographer and I don't do event shooting or any other type of situation where I'm getting paid to shoot photos/video. Its just myself and a small crew who are into shooting short films. I try to spend what little money I have on the camera and sound gear and improvise using DIY lighting, dollies, rigs, etc...That being said, I really don't care if someone notices that I'm using a VHS box and cut up plastic blinds for a matte box..its only the finished product I care about.

This is also a prototype, there are many ways this can be improved, but its fully functional in its present state. Sorry for the lousy photo, but my Canon Powershot is half dead. I still need to do a few adjustments such as replace my plastic and rubber mounts with metal plates, spray the matte box with a flat, non-glare paint, attach a black elastic bag between the matte box and lens so when I use smaller lenses there will be no light seeping through on the sides, etc.

If anyone is interested, I'll give you the full details. The whole thing was built using these two racks and scraps of items I found laying around in my garage/tool room. It holds my GH2, and Juicedlink nicely. I have my NTG-3 on a boom pole ($17), so there is no mic support arm. It would be easy enough to attach one.

I made this several days ago for a low budget short so I thought I'd share. It's very heavy duty, and can support a fully loaded RED ONE with ease. I used it with a fully loaded AF100 with a Hyperdeck Shuttle, rods, mattebox, FF, SmallHD, etc. It might be overkill for a GH2 tho. I accidentally tightened the two halve together too much and got flat spots in the wheels, so I'm in the process of replacing them as well as a few more little modifications. I'm not super happy with the rail design on the ends, but I needed something quick for the shoot. I'll probably update that at some point as well.
