Diagonal rain appears using GH2 + Premiere Pro CS6 without a hack https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6094/diagonal-rain-appears-using-gh2-premiere-pro-cs6-without-a-hack Mon, 11 Feb 2013 19:53:46 +0000 PeterParkorr 6094@/talks/discussions Hi,

I've been trying to work out why exporting some noisy low light footage in premiere pro CS6 is giving me 'diagonal rain' problems that aren't present in the original m2ts files from my GH2.

Reading two similar topics (below) the problem seems to be related to GOP length, which hack is being used, and the decoding abilities of certain players. But I shot this footage with the original firmware so this can't apply? Possibly it is a CS6 specific issue?

http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5120/please-help-problem-with-my-gh2-footage/p1 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3804/strange-pulsing-diagonal-pattern-in-gh2-hack-footage/p1

It's not footage I can take again so any advice on how to export this without the noise would be amazing... I'm a beginner but not posted it there as the problem seems to be a complicated one.

I just uploaded the start of my edit to youtube for an example of the problem. Some of my footage was 24p and some was 50 fps 720p but the problem persists in all the export formats I've tried;

Miraizon has agreed to be acquired by a large company https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12233/miraizon-has-agreed-to-be-acquired-by-a-large-company Fri, 23 Jan 2015 10:11:10 +0000 Jasketti 12233@/talks/discussions Miraizon who makes the Miraizon DNxHD and ProRes Codecs for PC has agreed to be acquired by a large company. Adobe? Black magic?

For the rest of the January 2015 there is 30% off sale in their online store, so if you are on a PC and need DNxHD or ProRes it could be a good time to buy...

There were problems with the version 1 of the codecs but at the moment I am running the version 2 of the codecs successfully.

Compression not supported and other weird problems with .MTS files https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11773/compression-not-supported-and-other-weird-problems-with-.mts-files Sun, 16 Nov 2014 08:37:00 +0000 MetaControl 11773@/talks/discussions I am working on a project of mine, which was shot with a hacked GH2 and a hacked 5dmkii. I did much of the editing a while back, but then i had to change computer; including a transition from windows 7 to windows 8.1; i started editing the project in PP & AE CC back on my old machine and all was fine. but recently - it seems like it happened with the big 2014 update (as i am obviously not the only one who has issues) - i am having trouble with my .MTS files from the GH2. I use them outside the stream folder structure as individual files. and i had the weird bug, where i had to rename folders to make my files work in Premiere after the update (as they suggest as a workaround in the official forums). But now, i am having problems with the MTS files outside of premiere too. I wanted to make proxy files out of some of them, or check them out with gspot. something is wrong with the compression format, the codec or something. i tried re-installing quicktime (i think to recall that the mts is a mpeg2 wrapper) with no luck. does anybody have an idea what it might be?

GH3 Data rate and colour management compression https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9174/gh3-data-rate-and-colour-management-compression Mon, 23 Dec 2013 06:05:35 +0000 Wotsisname 9174@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I am confused about the 50mbps / 72mbps date rate that the GH3 supposedly records at.

My footage, recorded as H264 MOV files in either of these high bit rates, is listed in FCP as between 5.8mbps and 8.5mbps. Analysing the footage with cinema tools reveals the same data rate - not the 50 / 72 it should be.

If I convert the files to ProRes I get the higher data rates - around 30 - 60mbps. Although this is closer, and sometimes in excess of the data rate I want, am I not merely up-resing the footage? The new date rate might be higher, but if it is not what the camera recorded, the information isn't t there.

I am also confused about the colour management. My h264 footage has a colour profile of 1-1-1. Is that the best I can get? I read somewhere that the GH3 will record 2-4-1. How do I set that?

Again up-resing to prores 422 or 444 will not introduce colours that are not recorded in the first place!

I look forward to hearing people's thoughts.

Jules

UT video codec https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6067/ut-video-codec Sat, 09 Feb 2013 07:01:50 +0000 eyefi 6067@/talks/discussions For everyone interested here you can download UT video codec: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Ut-Video-Codec-Suite

on mac you should install it in :/System/Library/Components

AE and Premiere now are able to export in this high quality codec at half the size of quicktime's Uncompressed 10bit.

VLC can't read UT because it doesn't use system components, but here you can find an update for vlc to register UT and some other video codecs. I don't know how to apply this register to VLC, so if anyone knows, your help is welcomed.

UT is helpful also if your thinking of using the new windmotion conversion tool across PC and mac platforms.

Why Apple ProRes is NOT Pro at all. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5422/why-apple-prores-is-not-pro-at-all. Sun, 09 Dec 2012 11:02:44 +0000 davidhjlindberg 5422@/talks/discussions Hey people,

Do you often use ProRes as a codec in your filmmaking process or when sending files to your client? Read this article made by my co-worker at Stopp, Johan Boije, about how unstable ProRes may be in terms of color and gamma shifting.

This test started out to check color fidelity with Apple ProRes and The Foundry products like Nuke and Hiero. We knew from earlier that results wouldn’t be ideal.Later we expanded the test to other video applications and encoding software to see what that would give us. The outcome was quite disturbing. A format most people believe to be stable in terms of color turns out to be not so “Pro” at all."

It should be a good free option to DNxHD, Cineform etc. as a near-lossless intraframe codec.

Limitations: Windows 7 is required and also registration on the GV site.

DaVinci Resolve 8.1.1 Lite, DNxHD and GH-2 footage https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1492/davinci-resolve-8.1.1-lite-dnxhd-and-gh-2-footage Fri, 18 Nov 2011 21:05:56 +0000 disneytoy 1492@/talks/discussions As of yesterday the main handicaps of the lite version were the limit to 2 nodes. This prevented some very essential corrections requiring 3+ notes for tracking or power windows. But now Black Magic has lifted that limitation! So now unlimited nodes, great use of CUDA acceleration. More importantly for us Windows users, DNxHD codec use to require a $500 license. But now is FREE! The fact ProRes as a writing codec is not available to us PC users, the free Avid DNxHD codec becomes an excellent alternative.

With finalcut X loosing its luster with the current upgrade, and the highly touted Resolve coming to Windows, us PC users have much less reason for MAC envy. I do have a Mac I can try Resolve 8.1.1 on at the moment but that computer isn't part of my editing workflow.

Particularly in light of high bit-rate GOP1 hacks such as Driftwood, I'd like to hear back regarding other's workflows getting their MTS files through a Resolve grading and out. I've done some transcoding tests with 5DtoRGB which supports output in 3 flavors of DNxHD. I believe it writes a .mov file. I'm not sure but I think Resolve wants an Avid MXF wrapper. Maybe someone can report back on that. Also, any other workflows to bring our MTS files into Resolve.

For now I will leave a couple links to some good tutorials to get you started. The interface is a bit non-intuitive. But, if you follow along these should get you going.

We need a benchmark for codec testing https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2246/we-need-a-benchmark-for-codec-testing Sat, 11 Feb 2012 10:56:16 +0000 duartix 2246@/talks/discussions Seriously, shooting static torture charts doesn't cut it, nor does it bring any useful information on how a patch is doing except for Full Intra. We need something that is pure (uncompressed), has texture, has rich tones, has complex non linear motion (like fire or water), that is repeatable and easily accessible to everyone to play on a Full HD screen.

I've been searching the Web for flash animations to no avail. Does anyone have an idea or can come up with something that fits this bill?

An OpenCL/GL or DirectX demo perhaps?

Editing Codec : Prores/DNxHD/Aquamotion/seaQuake/etc. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2098/editing-codec-proresdnxhdaquamotionseaquakeetc. Tue, 24 Jan 2012 00:35:40 +0000 Nityananda_SCSMath 2098@/talks/discussions I would like this thread to be a discussion of what is the appropriate required "flavor" or bitrate of an editing codec for a certain hack.

For instance, I am recording using the 100Mbps Aquamotion v2 hack, and I want to transcode to normal Prores 422, which is about 115Mbps for 1080p24. I don't want to transcode to HQ (220Mbps) or 4444 (330Mbps) if I don't have to. But am I losing quality? How much? I would rather have my file sizes be nearly half and have 98% of the quality of the hack, but I wouldn't make that sacrifice if I'm only getting 70% of the hack's capable quality. So some input from those who are more knowledgeable would be good.

Is this correct?

Aquamotion v2 100Mbps -> Appropriate Editing Codec -> Prores 422 or DNxHD 145

seaQuake 176mbs -> Appropriate Editing Codec -> Prores 422 HQ or DNxHD 220

Of course this thread should be an open discussion of different hacks and editing codecs not just relevant to me as the "Original Poster," I'm just starting things off.
