Consolidated Specs for Cinema Cameras with RAW https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5270/consolidated-specs-for-cinema-cameras-with-raw Thu, 22 Nov 2012 05:29:39 +0000 thepalalias 5270@/talks/discussions I went through the list of topics in Raw Cameras and did not see a list like this, so since I had been compiling some for the blog I posted today at http://www.pasadenapulse.net, I thought I would put them here so that others can add to it (and correct any errors that are statistically likely to have been added. :)

These cameras all have (or are slated to have soon) RAW recording capability in some form.

Max Horizontal Resolution

  • BMCC: 2.4K
  • Arri Alexa: 2.88K max horizontal resolution.
  • Sony FS-700: 4K expandable with 1.92K at release.
  • Sony F55: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2160).
  • Canon C500: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2960 RAW max).
  • Sony F65: Greater than 4K.*
  • Red One/Red One MX: 4.5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Scarlet: 5K max horizontal resolution (but 4K max horizontal resolution at 24/25/30P).
  • Red Epic: 5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Dragon: 6K max horizontal resolution. Unreleased.

*As for the Sony F65, I don't want to get into that can of worms. With it's 20MP sensor, let's just say "easily 4K, probably more in the future" but not get too far into it other than to say that the current recording format is 4K.

Cameras with Global Shutter

  • Sony F55

Max Framerates at 4K and Highest Resolution (with the color depth recorded)

  • BMCC: Cannot do 4K. Max 30P 12-bit log at 2.5K.
  • Arri Alexa: Cannot do 4K. Max 60P 12-bit log at 2.88K in 16x9 mode.
  • Red One MX: 30P 12-bit at both 4.5K and 4K.
  • Canon C500: 60P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Sony FS-700: Upcoming 60P at unspecified RAW bit-depth in 4K.
  • Sony F55: 60P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • Sony F65: 120P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • CMV12000: 90P 12-bit or 150P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Red Scarlet: 30P 16-bit at 4K. 12P at 5K.
  • Red Epic: 150P 16-bit at 4K. 120P 16-bit at 5K.
  • Red Dragon: Unknown 4K (expected to meet or exceed Red Epic at all framerates but guaranteed 120P at 5K). At least 85P 16-bit at 6K. Unreleased.

Native DR

  • Sony FS-700: Untested in RAW.
  • Red One (not MX): 11.3 stops official.
  • Canon C500: 12 stops official. (Though the highlight roll-off has been garnering praise)
  • BMCC: 13 stops official.
  • Red MX (as used in MX/Scarlet/Epic): 13.5 official. (Some sources measured at under 12 but I'm not invested in one measurement over the other).
  • Arri Alexa: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F55: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F65: 14 stops official.
  • Red Dragon: Over 15 stops official. Unreleased.

And of course, the Red Scarlet, Epic (and upcoming Dragon) support the HDRx mode that some people like and others do not, which is officially specified as increasing dynamic range to 18 stops (with a lot of caveats to go along with it).

Vivitar vs Canon FD lenses https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4968/vivitar-vs-canon-fd-lenses Tue, 23 Oct 2012 07:57:35 +0000 phazedreality818 4968@/talks/discussions hello all. i am very new to photography and videography. i have purchased a gh2 about 2 months ago and love it. my dad had some old school canon fd lenses laying around from when he was in the military in the early 80s. i bought the ciecio7 adapter and it works wonderfully. i love how the images are detailed, yet soft, and how the bokeh is incredibly nice.

i have a 50mm f1.8 and a 135mm 3.5

i am looking to buy a wider angle lens but i am caught between canon lenses and vivitar lenses for the fd mount. i am looking to get a fast (f2.0 or lower) 24 or 28mm lens, and the vivitar ones are much much much more affordable than their canon counterpart.

my question is this. how much of a difference is there between the canon fd and vivitar fd lenses? is the difference in price worth it to go for the canon? how does the vivitar lens hold up on its own?

GH2 holding its ground with Epic https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4999/gh2-holding-its-ground-with-epic Fri, 26 Oct 2012 11:49:04 +0000 ronmen 4999@/talks/discussions Hey guys, just thought you'd like to see some spots we shot on a Red Epic with a $40,000 Arri Alura 15.5 - 45mm lens and a GH2 with the Sanity 5 patch and a $100 Canon 85mm FD SSC prime lens. These are fairly low res files for web delivery but the high res footage looked great too. Here are the four spots:

http://www.nixhealth.com/home/reform

The Epic was used for the wide and medium shots, the GH2 was used for the CU cutaways on the face and hands. I think the footage cuts very well. 'Just goes to show that you don't need to spend $100K on a camera package to get very nice results.

Didn't have time for color correction. So this is just a test! Watch original quality view setting although youtube compression won't let you enjoy it on full resolution. If you want to watch this clip on full scale, you will need 2 monitors Full HD on landscape mode. For some of you would seem ridiculous but I would like to know if someone has tried this before. The test itself is very poor executed and poor equipment, I just did it in 5 minutes. Didn't have the same lenses or the same cameras. Is there a program like making photo panoramas but for videos as well? Will this be as good as anamorphic solution wide images? Let me know about your thoughts. Cheers!!!

20mm F2.8 Canon FD https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4814/20mm-f2.8-canon-fd Thu, 04 Oct 2012 10:09:29 +0000 Mirrorkisser 4814@/talks/discussions Just got that lens via mail. When i held it in my hands and was slightly shaking it, i heard some sounds as if something on the inside was loose. A sound i dont know from my other fds. When i tested the lens though, it was working fine. Focusing, Aperture etc all worked well.

Any ideas? Its a different built than the other FDs so maybe its natural?

Edit: I just noticed, my 85mm and 200mm make the same sounds, while the 35mm and 50mm dont. Hmm so all seems to be okay?!

Canon's Picture Style Editor necessary for color grade? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4798/canons-picture-style-editor-necessary-for-color-grade Wed, 03 Oct 2012 02:33:09 +0000 RyanPW 4798@/talks/discussions I recently came upon this great short film shot with the Canon 550d, and I found the color grade just blew me away. I noticed that their was some film grain added, and some other work done, but I found something about the quality of the image to really stand out from a lot of other 550d footage. It was in fact the Picture Style Editor that Canon has which allows you to create a preset that does a color balance without affecting your skin tones. This was mentioned in the comments of the video (the 8th person down) as a main reason why the director doesn't work with a gh2, as their is no form of this for doing a proper color grade while maintaining the skin tones.

Here is the video:

But could you not do the same grade in after effects with something like the Color Finesse tool? Or perhaps in CS6's speedgrade program (I have not used this yet)? It would seem quite compelling to me that panasonic does not have an option like this for their camera's as it does make a pretty big difference, but perhaps it is only because their is another work around that the director of this video did not know about? I'm curious to hear if anyone knows a solution to this problem, as I'd love to keep my skin tones intact for future shoots as I really do like the color grade of this video.

Thanks for the input!

BTW, did not see this posted anywhere else, if it is, please close thread, @Vitaley.

I'm asking $400 for everything. I'll ship here in the U.S. at no charge but overseas I'd have to have that covered by the buyer. Seems these are still retailing for $500, so I feel this is a good deal.

The PowerShot G1 X supports Full HD (1080p) movie capture instantly at 24fps, via a dedicated movie button. Taking advantage of the camera's large CMOS sensor, users can experience high quality movies, even in low light conditions, with the shallow depth of field associated with a larger sensor. Additionally, the 4x optical zoom can be used whilst filming, offering versatility, while stereo sound is also captured.

The bright, high-resolution, 920k dot LCD provides a sharp, detailed platform for image framing and review, while an optical viewfinder (OVF) with dioptre adjuster gives photographers the option to shoot according to their individual style. A newly-integrated manual pop-up flash provides the option to add additional light to a scene, and, using the hotshoe, external Canon Speedlite flashes can also be used.

HDR mode and ND filter

  • Sensor size - Four Thirds (18.7 x 14 mm) :-)
  • Effective pixels - 14.3 megapixels
  • Image ratio - 1:1, 5:4, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9
  • Video - 1920 x 1080 (24 fps), 1280 x 720 (30 fps), 640 x 480 (30 fps)
  • Weight (inc. batteries) - 390 g (0.86 lb / 13.76 oz)

Canon 100mm f2.0 FD for sale https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3686/canon-100mm-f2.0-fd-for-sale Sun, 24 Jun 2012 14:07:15 +0000 sam_rides_a_mtb 3686@/talks/discussions I have a Canon FD 100mm f2.0 for sale. Everything about the lens in near perfect except for the front element which has a very subtle bit of fungus. I have had this lens for over 3 years and I can tell you the fungus has not grown in that time, if anything, it appears to be less visible than when I first purchased it. The focus ring is smooth and the aperture ring is nice a snappy.

Have used this for both photos and videos on the GH1 and GH2 with gorgeous results!

I use this with the Canon BT-52 lens hood (designed specifically for this lens) and get nice contrasty images (even without it). Here are two sample images taken at f2 without the hood (option to view the originals in full res): http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4856193665/sizes/l/in/set-72157624687046230/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4856193013/sizes/l/in/set-72157624687046230/

I did some tests taking photos with the lens with a macro extension tube attached at various apertures just to see if I could get any sign of image degradation to show up because of the fungus: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4179552147/in/set-72157624687204126 and at the closest focusing distance with macro tube: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4179548171/in/set-72157624687204126/ You can be the judge.

Took it to a couple camera shops that do lens repairs and they said being that it is only on the front element and all the others look flawless, that I should not worry about it as it will have little to no affect of image quality.

Anyways, I love this lens, I just need to cut back my lens collection since I travel and move a lot. Offer me a fair price and I will include a brand new BT-52 lens hood.

Would prefer to ship within the US, though will ship internationally. Paypal accepted.

Might go to eBay, though figured I would offer it here first.

Also, have a couple other fast lenses on eBay currently with bidding starting at just $1: http://www.ebay.com/sch/sjsielen/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

All professional camera/camcorder tests show (resolution charts like ISO 12233 Test Chart) that most consumer camcorders can record videos with higher real resolution (lw/ph horizontal and lw/ph vertical) than the best DSLR cameras. Moreover consumer camcorders are are more popular in the market.

Birger Mount for AF100 (and GH2) https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/125/birger-mount-for-af100-and-gh2 Sun, 22 May 2011 16:00:29 +0000 Alex 125@/talks/discussions
here is the newsletter:

At NAB Birger demonstrated functioning concept models of a new lens mount system for both the Sony NEX-FS100 and the Panasonic AF-100 cameras.  These concept systems demonstrated electronic control of the focus and iris on Canon EF-mount lenses.  This email is an update on those products specifically for the Broadcast market.  Updates for the Industrial and Scientific; and Military, Security and Surveillance markets will be coming in the near future.

The AF-100 version of the product will come first, followed soon after by the Sony PMW-F3, Sony NEX-FS100 and the Arri Alexa.  As we did the initial work for these cameras, it became clear that we needed to make some changes to our new generation of lens control platform, to economically develop and manufacture these additional variants.

It became clear from our conversations at NAB that an economical (and unobtrusive) wireless solution was important.  We will be coming out with a hot-shoe mounted radio receiver (approximately 30mm cube) that will not require a separate power connection or battery, to remain powered from the lens mount, even during lens changes.  Fortunately we realized the importance of this module prior to releasing the first adapters, as it would not have been possible without some small changes.

This talk of change generally raises questions of price and schedule.  While we are adding significant flexibility to the system, I am happy to say there will be negative effect on price.  We are finalizing some of the design and manufacturing issues to get ready for a volume release of the AF-100 EF-mount Adapter, and when we have the last details worked through, we will announce that we are ready to begin full scale production.  At this point we will first show the final version of the product, announce the dealers, and be about two weeks away from volume shipments.

Those that have expressed (and wish to express) interest in selling our products should know that we feel it most important to attend to the product related issues first.  We will be releasing more information on the dealer program, contracts and a closing date for orders for the initial production build in the next few weeks.  We will not be accepting any deposits, orders or payments until the product is ready for production - and we have done a public demonstration.  All orders at that point will require prepayment, so we can fairly allocate inventory worldwide.  We are planning an initial build of 1000 units for the AF100/EF product.

We have an active beta program for the AF100 and the FS100 products, and have been floating hardware on some very large (and some not so large) productions.  This has offerred us invaluable ergonomic information on the forth coming remotes, as well as access to footage and real world testing.  In the coming weeks we expect to be able to talk about prductions using both the AF100 and FS100 focus systems.

We are excited for the future of Birger in the Broadcast industry.  We are even more excited to get this product released in the short term.  There is no one that wants these new products out in the field more than I do.

Regards,
Erik.

Canon EOS 1D-C. is it worth it (MJPEG@4K + $15,000) https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2879/canon-eos-1d-c.-is-it-worth-it-mjpeg4k-15000- Sun, 15 Apr 2012 23:41:54 +0000 TrackZillas 2879@/talks/discussions I would like to know your thoughts about the new Canon EOS 1D-C. Is it worth the buy? Yeah!!! sure 4K on a DLSR is impressive, but MJPEG compression 8bit 422 squeezing all that information took a good amount of compression. Why not 2k Raw 12bit 444 instead? Let me know also what you feel about the price point... would you pay $15,000?
