Calculate first, write second
  • "A few years ago, during the middle of the D40/D40x/D60 progression, Nikon executives made a statement that essentially said "camera makers need to be ready to make and sell US$399 DSLRs." The implication was that those days were not far away. So where are those inexpensive cameras? Today we pretty much have the same US$599 price for low-end DSLR kits as we've had for years."

Let's use shadowstats.com and calculate it carefully.
Assume what $399 price had been told in 1.01.2008 (D40x had been presented much earlear in 2007, so time frame is correct).
According to shadow stats calculator we have $560 equivalent in Aug 2011.

Looking at the yen rate chart below we could also conclude that something is definitely wrong with Thom logic.
If we fix price in YEN, price in USD will be about $570 now.

A camera valued as we would if we had compared the price then and now the price of gold?
Is there any value to the Absolute which to compare prices by year? Bread, rice, corn?

    You can't use such method.
As you want to compare item that is always bough on the money left from other things.
So, you must use some CPI estimation.
