  • UK consumers snapped up 426,000 SLRs in 2013, compared to 100,000 CSCs, according to figures released to Amateur Photographer by market research firm GfK. Demand for SLRs declined 11% on the previous year.

CSC sales appear to have peaked in 2012 when 146,000 units were sold over the 12 months.

Total UK cameras sales fell 28.4% in value terms in 2013, with SLRs down 21%, CSCs falling 31% and compacts 33%.

  • Shares in Canon Inc (7751.T) advanced 2.4 percent to a three-week high of 3,154 yen on Wednesday after it said it will buy back up to 50 billion yen worth of its own shares, or 1.6 percent of its outstanding shares.

Canon shares are down 5.5 percent since the start of 2014, adding to a 0.3 percent drop last year, when the benchmark Nikkei rallied 57 percent.

Buybacks are now very common as are required to keep shares afloat.
