Any recommendations for a digital media player? Couldn't find much recent stuff with a search. Would like to play higher bitrate files on my bigscreen.

Do you really need one? Just buy nettop or small note.
Up to 50Mbit TV can play itself usually.

Dedicated media player $50 - cheesy NetBook/tablet non-dedicated $200.

$50 media player will be total shit, believe me. Also ignore tablets.
I suggest to get Core i3/i5 based small note. As it could play things in software and most probably will be ok for future 4K playback.

For bigscreen playback, any Bluray player ( $60-90) with a USB slot acts as a mediaplayer. LG Blurays will play hi-bitrate GH2 clips, but the suffix has to be changed from .MTS to .mpg. or just add .mpg. Best to test in the store.
