Good to see them taking video more serious. Fujifilm and Olympus are the companies that I have high hopes for. They are the only companies that really seem to understand photography (without gimmicks) but they never focused on video. Once they do, I think we can expect some marvellous cameras. This one is on my shortlist for a travel compact.
1080p60 at 36Mbit is already not so bad :-)
It's a capable enthusiast compact that offers just about everything that an advanced user would want, but Fujifilm has left enough automatic features to please the point-and-shoot crowd, as well. While there are still a few outstanding issues, the new X20 still impresses us enough to earn our recommendation.
Fujifilm X20 offers 1080p60 video mode with two further options, 720p60 and VGA (640 x 480) at 30fps. There are also three high speed modes, 640x480 at 80fps, 320x240 at 150fps and 320x112 at 250fps, providing slow motion playback speeds (at 30fps) of nearly 3x, 5x and just over 8x respectively, slightly faster than the three modes available on the X10.
Video is encoded using the h.264 codec at an average bit rate of 36Mbits/s and saved in a QuickTime .mov file. Stereo sound is recorded via twin mics located on the top section of the front panel.
Its new sensor incorporates phase-detect AF points on the chip to augment the contrast-detect AF system. This works in both movie and still modes, but its effect when shooting video is much more apparent.
