powered zoom focusing 1/2 inch lens on 1/3 inch camera

    have purchased a number of second hand lenses which are mostly 1/2 inch format 8-120mm. The problem is at the wide angle end of the zoom the lenses will not focus enough when I use these on a 1/3 inch sensor camera. can you tell me why this is and if there is any way around the problem.
