I've been using three GH2s to record gigs for the last few years and recently bought an old Canon XF300 to complement them. I'd skim read some online reviews and was under the impression that the Canon could shoot 24p - but it can't.
So I'm looking at re-hacking my GH2s to be able to have 25fps with reliable spanning and respectable low light performance. I use a mixture of Panasonic lenses and other lenses using cheap adaptors used in "shoot without lens" mode.
I'm not sure which hack I've being using for the last couple of years (I just saved it as "new hack" when I downloaded it) but it was quite unpredictable with spanning - and I could never work out what combination of mode, lens and card might be relied upon.
So my question is which hacks can give reliable spanning without insane bitrates and at 25fps so that I can leave the GH2s unmanned for about 90 minutes (and potentially 2 hours)?
Hey Yousef, cool that someone is still using our beloved GH2, what a great device, especially for live gigs.
It depends on what SD cards you are using. Do you have SanDisk Extreme Cards with 45 MB/s? Then use Flowmotion v2.02 with that hack I always had reliable spanning also in 25fps Find the hack here -> https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5758/gh2-flow-motion-v2-100-mbps-fast-action-performance-series-2/p1 You need to be logged in to download.
Dou you use other Cards? Then it is a bit more difficult and really you would need to test it.
Try this hack called "Space" it has a lower bitrate but is supposed to be very reliable (scroll down a bit) -> http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10978/driftwood-cluster-x-series-4moon-t8spizz-t7/p7
Or GOLGOP3-13 -> https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5385/gh2-high-quality-gop3-settings-series-2-an-valkyrie-golgop3-13-gop3zilla-duke-natural-/p1
You can also try "The End" by apefos, it's the most recent patch and supposed to be good. there is a whole suite of different versions to try -> http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12684/the-end-nr4-stable-high-intra-gh2-patches-03282015-by-apefos/p5
BTW for an easy way to merge the files before importing them into your editing program, use my script: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19340/easy-script-for-dragdrop-merging-of-spanned-avchd-.mts-files-in-windows And then if playback struggles while editing, transcode to DNxHD with Shutter Encoder https://www.shutterencoder.com/
Anyway, good luck!
Thank you for the replies! I must have my notifications incorrectly set so only saw these on logging back in today - apologies.
I had a minor disaster last night - my second, unmanned, camera refused to span and just left a single 0-byte file on the card (an Integral 100MB/s 64GB). Have just tested it at home this morning and it seemed to completely crash the camera at the 20min mark. I've lost track of which hack I'm using, once again.
While typing here, a test with a Transcend 95MB/s 32GB failed - just stopped recording at 18mins but didn't lock the camera on this occasion.
I'm going to check out the hacks recommended above prior to a fairly important gig recording on Saturday but I'm wondering how crucial the specific speed rating of the card is - is there a possibility that you can go too fast and that a more modestly rated card (ie the 45MB/s mentioned) could be better?
And many, many thanks for the script - looks incredibly useful.
