February 20, 2019, Saitama, Japan - Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Ajisaka), a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the development of two new lenses for full-frame DSLR cameras—the 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043) zoom lens and the SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045) fixed focal lens; and a new high-speed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras—the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046).

Tamron will display these new lenses at CP+ 2019, the World Premiere show for camera and photo imaging, beginning February 28 through March 3, 2019 at Pacifico Yokohama and at the Wedding and Portrait Professionals International (WPPI), February 27 through March 3, 2019 in Las Vegas.

The lenses are expected to launch in the middle of 2019.

Fast compact Portrait Zoom breaks new ground: 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043)

The new compact Model A043 is designed for fast handling and easy transport and features a zoom that extends from 35mm to 150mm, incorporating the 85mm focal length (often regarded as optimum for portrait shooting). It offers a fast F/2.8 aperture at the wide-angle end while maintaining a bright F/4 at the telephoto end. For close-focusing, the MOD (Minimum Object Distance) is 17.7 in across the entire zoom range. Delivering superb image quality, precisely placed LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements and aspherical lenses quash degrading optical aberrations. Furthermore, the Model A043 incorporates the Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) system, which assures optimal AF performance and effective vibration compensation.

I sold most of my zoom lenses and only shoot with primes now for various reasons. I still have a Sigma 24-105 F/4 but I haven't used it in over a year so probably time to sell it.... I prefer to shoot with a 35mm lens on one body and a 85mm on another body over the traditional 24-70 70-200. Both ways have pros and cons.

To bad it wasn't a constant F/2.8 but they probably did that to keep the cost and lens size down to a minimum. Very interesting lens I am curious to see how this lens performs at 35MM and 150MM. Time to speculate on pricing ;-) I am guessing this will sell for about $1300.00....

Silent autofocus driven by OSD (Optimized Silent Drive) DC motor

The OSD DC motor debuted in the 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) with favorable response. OSD technology reduces drive noise significantly (compared to previous DC motor-equipped lenses) while boosting autofocusing precision and speed by a wide margin. This eliminates noisy distractions during portrait shooting. Furthermore, the superior AF precision also provides more accurate tracking when locked on moving subjects.

Outstanding VC (Vibration Compensation)

Tamron's original VC system is enhanced in the A043 with an independent MPU dedicated to image stabilization without detracting from AF processing functions. Consequently, the VC (Vibration Compensation) achieves 5 stops*, according to CIPA Standards. This is highly beneficial when shooting at the telephoto end where camera movement is magnified. A very curious lens indeed!

Wonder if it can find a niche market for itself vs 70-200 f2.8 (faster and more reach, but not anywhere near as wide) vs 70-200 f4 (greater reach but again not as wide, and also slower on the wide end as well) vs 24-70 f2.8 (a bit faster on the long end and wiiiider, but with much less reach)
