Intel LGA 2066 x299 HEDT Motherboard Selection Guide for Video Editors
  • Reserved, update soon.

Now filling all boards lists with data.

    X299 chipset diagram

    image

If you look at this you see quite underwhelming stuff, it is still much better than AMD chipset as provides 24 PCIe 3.0 lines.
Link to CPU is still same slow DMI 3.0 (PCI 3.0 x4 total only).
But other than extra 2 SATA ports it is identical in every way to consumer Z270-Z370 chipsets.

  • Processors we are looking for:

Processors are main issue of x299 platform, good models are very expensive and rare on used market still.
With time it can change with appearance of used Xeon models form big datacenters, but now it is almost no of such offers present in most countries including China.

  • Temperatures

Lot of X299 boards run extremely hot if you use overclocking.

Main reason for this is simpler and cheaper VRM and also bad heatsinks being just slab of aluminium made be designer without any fine fins.

    Heatsink designs

In present day it is usually designers who make heatsinks even for HEDT motherboards.
They are made for looks, and not to be efficient in their real function.

  • AVX-512 as big advantage of Skylake-X and up CPUs

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVX-512

Video editing and encoding get significant gains from such highly parallel instructions and blocks for their execution. This is that AMD lacks for now.

All Skylake-X CPUs Have 2 AVX-512 Units. This means that you just need to always ignore two cheapest Kaby lake based models (as the are actually consumer CPU with different mount with even same 2 channel memory controller and lack of AVX-512).

Note that if CPU starts to execute AVX-512 code it'll drop frequency to avoid thermal issues. It is also called "AVX-512 throttling effect" and various overclockers are concerned with it. With any video editing software that is actually designed to use AVX-512 instructions it'll always result in real performance gain, despite drop in frequency.

All 100% present consumer CPUs lack AVX-512 support, including i9-9900K model

  • Nice construction features to look for

    Armored PCIe x16 slots

    image

Nice feature, as it makes it impossible to accidently damage slot pulling big card and forgetting the slot lock.

    Armored memory slots

    image

Not so important, but makes slots much more reliable and prevent damage during some accident during big cooler mounting. Or if you try to pull stick in small full case.

  • List of all x299 ATX sized motherboards

Red - something not good or missing feature.
Blue means - ok or average.
    Teal - above average.
Green - really good for us.

  • MSI New Creator X299 and X299 Pro 10G Boards

    PR

We are proud to introduce three new motherboards to anticipate every creator's need from high loading operation to general graphic design. For the high-end processors and X299 platform, MSI all aluminium design ensures CPU to run at full speed for the best performance. Larger heatsinks contains more surface for heat dissipation to cool down CPU while high-loading operation.

Super Speed USB 20G: For all types of designers, large data and files transfer is always troublesome as it takes plenty of waiting time. All new MSI X299 motherboards support the latest USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Super Speed USB 20G solution powered by ASMedia to meet creators' requirement. Transfer speed enhances to incredibly 4 times faster than USB 3.2 Gen1 solution so that designers can save time on backup and other essential data transfer processes. "We are pleased to have a strong and close relationship with MSI. ASMedia Technology Inc. offers the latest USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Super Speed USB 20G solution to the market and continues working closely with top motherboard vendor MSI," said Chewei Lin, President of ASMedia.

    Dual LAN

Dual LAN solution is essential for content creation on both Ethernet and Intranet. Concerning all types of time-wasting operation such as redundancy, teaming, or load balancing, up to 10 Gbps high-bandwidth and low-latency connectivity ensure incredible data transfer speed which is faster than ever before. MSI LAN Manager can automatically classifies and prioritizes your applications in an intelligent way, giving you the best online experience with the lowest latency.

The conceptual design of MSI Creator X299 is inspired by the craft of crystal. Embedded in the heatsinks with billions of color effects, the crystal design dress up with RGB to present the reflection under sunshine or light. With sharp edges and cuts for heatsinks and color gradation of crystal design, the perfect combination enhances the elegance, making the motherboard as a work of art.

    More Powerful than Enough

Creator X299 is perfectly built with a premium thermal design for high workloads which might cause heat dissipation problems and thermal issues. While creators processing high loading operation such as video editing, animation, or programming, the all-aluminium design with enlarged heatsink size and heat-pipe help dissipate excessive heat and enhance the performance. Besides thermal design, Creator X299 also ensures stable and high efficient power delivery with dedicate 12 phases 90A digital power and triple 8 pin power connectors.

    More Compatibility for Storage

Creator X299 shows maximum compatibility for storage. This motherboard is equipped with 3x M.2 slots, plus 4x additional M.2 slots with M.2 XPANDER-AERO, an exclusive add-on accessory card, incredible 19x USB ports, and U.2 ports for all various creator devices to connect, which means creators do not have to sacrifice for anything while doing works.

The latest Lightning USB 20G is powered by our close partner ASMedia with the new ASM3242 ultra-high speed USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 controller. Lightning USB 20G enhances USB speed to 20 Gb/s, which is two times higher than USB 3.2 Gen 2.

    More Efficiency for Data Transfer

The content creation process is time-consuming so the data transfer speed is one of the most essential factors for creators. To meet the most demanding requirements, Creator X299 is equipped with an ultra-fast solution including network and transfer connection. Dual onboard LAN, included one 10G Super LAN, ensures higher speed, which is better to transfer 4K videos, huge size pictures and other large files in a fraction of the time. WiFi 6, the latest wireless technology, supports up to 4x network capacity and efficiency. Thunderbolt 3 provides 8x faster speed than USB 3.2 with up to 40 Gb/s and also supports more video bandwidth for two 4K at 60Hz monitors working simultaneously, which can satisfy in just one Type-C connectors.

    More Flexibility for Temperature Control

To set up a quiet and cool system for designers, Creator X299 provides outstanding temperature management with multiple fan headers other features to keep the system stable enough for any workloads. With 8x PWM fan headers and 1x dedicated thermal sensors, creators can manually control all the fans by Creator Center, or let the thermal sensors automatically assist to control the system. Besides, for the onboard three M.2 slots, Creator X299 features three M.2 Shield Frozr to sustain maximum high-speed for M.2 SSD without throttling. These heatsinks ensures better cooling efficiency and protection for M.2 SSD devices.

    X299 PRO 10G and X299 PRO

Designed to satisfy any professional workflow, X299 PRO 10G motherboard features everything in demand, including thermal, network, data transfer and storage. MSI extended PWM heatsink and heat-pipe design ensure high-end processor to run at full speed with lower temperature. Two M.2 Shield Frozr heatsinks offer the best thermal protection and avoid throttling to maintain maximum performance. X299 PRO 10G has a bunch of accessories. M.2 XPANDER-Z add-on card expands 2x M.2 slots with heatsink and fan for more storage.

A 10G Super LAN card supports high bandwidth, high density and low latency for large file transfer in a flash. The onboard dual LAN includes 2.5G and Gigabit LAN, making faster and stable networking connection. With ASMedia ASM 3242 controller, Lightning USB 20G is also available on X299 PRO 10G for faster USB speeds.
