Weighing in at less than 7 oz (192 g), the new lightweight FE 50mm F1.8 “normal” prime lens (model SEL50F18F) delivers an outstanding blend of performance, compactness and value, making it a perfect choice for hobbyist photographers and videographers looking to experience the benefits of a wide aperture prime lens at an attainable cost.
The lens features a new optical design with an aspherical element that effectively compensates for all forms of aberration, resulting in beautiful, crisp imagery. Additionally, it has a circular aperture with a maximum of F1.8, producing beautiful ‘bokeh’ in images that allows the subject to stand out against a smoothly defocused background. For extended durability, the new prime lens is built with a solid metal mount.
The new FE 50mm F1.8 prime lens will also be available in May for about $250 US and $350 CA, respectively.
The 50mm is a very good lens and quite a bargain at the price.

I do have a problem with is the autofocus performance.
It’s very loud, and it’s comically slow

The FE 50mm f/1.8 is a tough one to judge. Optically, it’s really a very good lens. It’s very sharp over almost the entire aperture range, it has beautiful color and contrast and very pleasing bokeh. It’s also got low distortion but flare performance isn’t great.
Given the lens' maximum aperture of ƒ/1.8, it's likely that many people will want to shoot at that aperture setting. If you're looking for edge-to-edge sharpness, you won't find it at ƒ/1.8; you have to stop down significantly.

The resolution characteristic is fairly solid. The outer image field is very soft at large apertures but to be fair - your main subject tends to be near the image center so it's probably not all that of a deal-breaker in the real life. The center itself is already very sharp and contrasty at f/1.8. The situation is very different between f/4 and f/8 where the quality is impressive indeed. Lateral CAs are generally not an issue.
Lens is easy to use, performs reliably and produces impressively crisp looking images. When the price falls this could well become a bargain. It does fit well into the category of the inexpensive kit lens and in that context is very acceptable.

FE 50mm f/1.8’s AF system is primitive, slow and noisy. It’s something that’s even tougher to live with when you consider the Sony lens costs noticeably more than both its Canon and Nikon counterparts.
