RODE videomic VS the PRO version

I have done some research for a low cost mic for my GH2 shoulder rig and i am very close to order the RODE videomic as i think it has not significant difference with the PRO version. I don't care much for the size, but i do care for the quality. Any suggestions ?

I'm just learning about this stuff, so be gentle with me, please.

Thinking about improving audio with my GH2. Originally I thought that for low-budget, okay, cheap (just a hobby for me), that the Rode Videomic would be a nice option.

Then I start reading here about audio recorders, and take a look at the Zoom H1. Seems pretty neat, and cheaper than the Videomic!

Now I wonder, why would anyone choose the Videomic over the H1, for a budget option? If I understand things correctly, the H1 offers more capability. You could mount it on the camera and run line-in to camera AND have headphone monitoring (with a splitter), or you could take it off the camera altogether for interviews, or attach a separate mic to it like a lav mic. Am I correct? Am I missing something?

Que Audio Mini Shotgun Pro

I'm having a really hard time finding reviews for the new Que Audio Q Mini Shotgun Pro microphone. It's a beefed-up version of the Q Mini Shotgun and was presented at the NAB2012.

Compared to it predecessor (which is now sold as a lite version) the interference tube has grown a bit (its still slim compared to the Videomic Pro) and there is a new switch to enable a 20dB gain. The microphone is sold as part of the „Q DSLR-Video PRO Microphone Kit“ (1) and the „Q Sniper PRO Microphone Kit“ (2).

I'm especially interested in the latter kit, since the idea of a super compact booming kit intrigues me. Another advantage of this kit is that it includes an XLR adapter which enables a true balanced connection. This gives me the option to upgrade my VDSLR setup with a powered XLR adapter like the JuicedLink RM333 later on. But I want to make sure the microphone has a good quality justifying the hefty price tag of 450$ for the Sniper Pro Kit. Videomaker published a very positive review of the kit (3), and there is also a video review (4), but both of them didn't seem very substantiated. Has anybody made experiences with this microphone? How does it compare to the Videomic Pro or the Sennheiser MKE400?

While doing some test shoots with the GH2 + VideoMic the other week, I realized (when reviewing the files in the NLE) that the camera had pickup up a really annoying high-pitched (constant) noise. I blamed it on the connections, so I tried to reproduce the noise at home and the noise was still there. Then I blamed it on the 3.5 -> 2.5 adapter (which is a short cable), and decided to purchase another (a right angle adapter from hosa, the GMP-467) and the noise still persists.

When I set the audio input level to the lowest setting ("level 1" if I am not mistaken), the noise is inaudible.. but then again the camera is barely picking up any sound. And, quite logically, increasing the input level adds its share of noise. The noise is very noticeable at 2 and unbearable at 4.

I'm using driftwood's Sedna A (which has an audio hack included, as I understand). I tried using the VideoMic with another sound device (a zoom h1), and couldn't reproduce that high pitched noise..

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is this supposed to be the camera's default behavior? Am I missing something?

Listen to seven different mics into a GH2

I just tested out seven different mics into my GH2. I tried to get a cross-sampling of all of the mics out there, from a $35 Audio Technica mic, all the way up to the $1249 Sennheiser MKH 8060. Here's a link to the article & video:

Most of the video was shot with the regular GH2 firmware (and the 20mm Lumix G lens), but the very last shot was done with the GH2vk hack, using the cbrandin's 66mb patch. I hope you find it helpful!
