The issue is that I got hold of old Panasonic FZ300 and wanted to removed the time recording limitation on the camera. Tried several YT tutorials with no result at all. Then I stumbled into PTool3 the firmware manipulation tool and followed the instructions using the FZ300V22.bin firmware file, but the tool doesn't accept it. is PTool camera restricted? Or is it me being stupid? If so is there another tool that can fix this?

Trying to flash camera w/apefos settings; getting general error http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13929/trying-to-flash-camera-wapefos-settings-getting-general-error Tue, 13 Oct 2015 18:05:03 +0000 smrlo 13929@/talks/discussions So I've been trying to download any of the settings by apefos to see if they reduce the "rain" artifact but cannot get ptools to recognize any of them. It works fine with most of the other settings I've downloaded (just did so for sanity), although there have been certain ones that it would not recognize previously. Is there something I'm missing? There are other people who have been able to download his patches, so I'm somewhat confused why this is happening. When I open the file in ptools it just gives me a generic "error" message; when I try to open the file in windows it says "the Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupt." Appreciate any help offered.

P.S. I sent Apefos a message but am still waiting to hear from him, just thought I'd try all possible avenues to figure this out.

720p 60p GH2 hack: an attempt to improve the quality, stability and reliability. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10650/720p-60p-gh2-hack-an-attempt-to-improve-the-quality-stability-and-reliability. Sat, 21 Jun 2014 17:03:43 +0000 apefos 10650@/talks/discussions I am trying to improve the quality of 720p 60p in GH2.

I did some research in the forum about PTools settings but I did not find the answers I need...

What happens is:

Only GOP which works good for 720p 60p are GOP 30 and GOP 3, all other GOP gives diagonal pattern (rain) in computer monitor. But the GOP 3 in 720p always stops recording and it seems the card is not the problem, I am using Sandisk 45mbps and other people says the Sandisk 95mbps also stops recording in 720p hacks... The GOP 6, 12 and 15 works for some shoots, but they are unstable (sometimes stops recording) and gives diagonal pattern (rain) in computer monitor. GOP 3 stops recording all the time, no matter the bitrate (I tested GOP 3 from 40 to 200mbps). So GOP 30 is the only option.

Problem is: when using the GOP 30 the camera encoder always keeps the bitrate very low when the camera is quiet, when there is no motion in the image, and this gives lots of macroblocking and texture lost in low light. Even when I set the bitrate to 48mbps or 64mbps in PTools the camera does not record 48mbps or 64mbps, StreamParser shows only around 23mbps... (for static low light shoots)

The auto quantizer all to motion or all to details did not make any difference. So I did some try to change settings in TESTER options of PTools. I fount the TOP and BOTTOM bitrate limits and I enabled it with 48000 and 42000 for top and bottom 720p, but this makes no effects in encoding, bitrate is still very low for static shots no matter the bitrate I type in PTools...

Only thing I found to make the bitrate encoding keep high is the GOP 3, but camera stops recording in all 720p shoots, the GOP 3 just works for 1080p.

So I am wondering if there is a way to keep the bitrate high using GOP 30 in 720p...

Any suggestion welcome, thanks.

GH2 to monitor: is there a hack to stop auto change to Interlaced when camera set to progressive? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7278/gh2-to-monitor-is-there-a-hack-to-stop-auto-change-to-interlaced-when-camera-set-to-progressive Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:42:17 +0000 Social 7278@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I've been tinkering with my camera set up. I wanted to monitor what I was shooting on a bigger screen, and wanted to use my macbook pro retina as the monitor. I bought a blackmagic intensity shuttle, connected it via HDMI to the shuttle and the shuttle to my mac via thunderbolt.

At first I had no picture - the camera was set to 24p cinema mode at FH.... but, in order to get the camera working through Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 capture function (and the blackmagic media express software) I had to change the settings on the software to 1080i 50 - so it looks like both pieces of software think the camera is spitting out 1080i 50 rather than 1080p 24.

As a result, I have 2 questions:

1 - does using an HDMI monitor change the footage captured on the SD card in the camera from 24p 1080p to 50 1080i? If not, then that's fine, I only want to monitor the footage and can cope with a visual change showing on my Mac. If so, then.... we have an issue.... 2 - is there a hack or option in ptools that will keep it at 24 1080p if it does affect the SD card recorded footage? I'm using Flowmotion v2 at the moment.

@Vitaliy_Kiselev - can you, or any of the geniuses on here help?

Many thanks,

Rob

Macro-blocking on AVCHD but not on MJPEG ? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7129/macro-blocking-on-avchd-but-not-on-mjpeg- Sat, 01 Jun 2013 13:21:59 +0000 TruHype 7129@/talks/discussions Hi, I've discovered that there was Macro-blocking on AVCHD 24p video (even when transcoded with 5d2RGB), but not with MJPEG ! I was using the 'Apocalypse now Cluster v7 DREWNET 444 Soft Matrix' (MJPEG 2k and changed 30p to 24p with ptools).

How do I get rid of it ?

For a Hacked GH2, Is a recording limit of 3 minutes 57 seconds normal if recording limit is left on? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6922/for-a-hacked-gh2-is-a-recording-limit-of-3-minutes-57-seconds-normal-if-recording-limit-is-left-on Thu, 09 May 2013 12:00:09 +0000 Dr_Mabuse 6922@/talks/discussions I just hacked my GH2 for the first time with Canis Majoris Day. I forgot to check the recording time limit box in, and the camera now only records for 3 mins 57 seconds. Is this simply because of the high bitrate? It's not even something I mind, since I used to do a lot of work on film and each roll would last less than that. I'm asking just to make sure there's nothing wrong. It's the first time I've done this.

Hack Terms FAQ added to the Faqs section http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5893/hack-terms-faq-added-to-the-faqs-section Thu, 24 Jan 2013 13:28:15 +0000 Brian_Siano 5893@/talks/discussions Some of us have written an FAQ to explain, in general terms, what Vitaly's Hack actually does for the GH2. It's a basic summary of how the GH2 compresses its data, and why and how this impacts image quality.

This is the FAQ to read if you're trying to read the forums, and finding a lot of technical stuff and acronyms that are going right over your head. It won't make you design hacks as good as Driftwood's or Sanity or Cake, and it won't tell you which hack is the best one to use. But if you read it, you will understand what I-frames and P-frames are, what GOP is, what intraframing and interframing are, and a few other details that'll help you follow some of the discussions here.

I P B Scaling Tables? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5757/i-p-b-scaling-tables Sat, 12 Jan 2013 14:09:39 +0000 kseaq 5757@/talks/discussions Hello,

First time user, simple question.

Based on the various hack settings, I'm instructed to input a variety of values for Scaling I P B. However, I'm becoming frustrated because under the quantizer scaling tables section in Ptools the only options I see are Scaling high, med, low T1, T2, T3.

What am I supposed to do about these scaling settings? No problems other than this.

Thanks.

Ptools 3.66 wont load ini files? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5447/ptools-3.66-wont-load-ini-files Mon, 10 Dec 2012 22:18:17 +0000 andycl 5447@/talks/discussions Hello All,

I've ran into a slight problem. I downloaded the new ptools and now when I try to load a patch from 'my populars' basket, it wont recognize the patches/ files. I can however make a patch of my own and save it. Am I the culprit here or is this a glitch of some kind? Pardon my ignorance, I'm not new to this but l'm no genus either, this is the first problem with using ptools, it might be me, and if it is I'd like to know what i'm doing wrong. Thanks in advance

Could anyone recommend which hack would be best for the purpose. And I freely admit that I have no idea what I'm doing.

"bad file name, camera won't be able to read such a file" http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2445/bad-file-name-camera-wont-be-able-to-read-such-a-file Wed, 29 Feb 2012 18:15:22 +0000 yarlanz 2445@/talks/discussions Some people, like me, have experienced a problem: Being unable to save the hacked firmware for their GH1 (or GH2, I assume) with Ptool, because it just keeps insisting that "bad file name, camera won't be able to read such a file". This, even if the naming follows the rules exactly (in the vein of GH1__133.bin), and nothing seems to help.

I do not know if anybody has reported the solution before, at least I could not find one here or the rest of the internet, but I faced this problem today and eventually found a fix.

The solution is that the SOURCE firmware, the one you load at the beginning, needs to be correctly named as well. When the problem happened to me, I had made a copy/paste duplicate of the very original Panasonic firmware that I had downloaded from the internet. This had resulted to a source filename "GH1__132 - Copy.bin"

One would imagine that it makes no difference, as PTool requests the user to give a name when saving and that is the only thing that has to pass the validity check. However, for some reason the original filename, probably "-" or " " character, echoes the saving procedure and the validity test is failed. For instance, when I finally tested renaming the source firmware first back to "GH1__132.bin and then saving it with the name"GH1__133.bin", it was suddenly again very acceptable name and finally got my hacked firmware saved.

Help with GH1 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1149/help-with-gh1 Tue, 11 Oct 2011 17:59:52 +0000 skenti 1149@/talks/discussions Yesterday, I spent almost 10 hours trying to hack my DSLR. I followed the given instructions to a tee, also watching 2 youtube videos, just to make sure I was doing everything correctly. I still could not get the camera hacked. I spent so much time trying to do this because my Ego could not accept that a pretty computer literate guy could not do something that seemed so simple to do. After every try and puting the SD card Class 10 in my camera, I would just get the error message about there not being any media on file for the camera to read when I pressed the play button. I am very sure that I did everything correctly, as I must have gone thru the process about 30 times over the course of the day. I am extremely frustarted. Can anyone help? Are there any new services out there springing up that can help you do this? I used 3 diffecrent cards and got the same outcome. I even went to buy a card at WALMART when my other two cards would not do the trick!!! I went online to try and download the latest version of ptools. I have ver. 3.40. Supposedly, there is a 3.51 version out there. The wiki website only has the 3.4. Can you help? Please help. Thanks.

Frame Buffers and Limits http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1060/frame-buffers-and-limits Thu, 29 Sep 2011 07:04:49 +0000 driftwood 1060@/talks/discussions PTool Questions http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/456/ptool-questions- Thu, 21 Jul 2011 19:37:18 +0000 stoney 456@/talks/discussions , I'm a total noob tester. I know. RTFM. But there's no fuking manual!!! Going through piles of postings? Are you kidding me? So here it goes. Please feed me more info. I will continue to update this 1st post as I learn more. But this won't cover anything in depth. Just enough knowledge to get started for noob testers.

Basic Info

First read GH1 Firmware Hack FAQ. Then Bayer Filter, YCbCr, Chroma Subsampling, Intra Frame Coding, Inter-frame (P-frame) Coding. See @driftwood's post about various topics. @cbrandin's post corrects some misinformation.

Patches For End Users

MJPEG Size Adjustments: I guess this is where anamorphic settings done. See Anamorphic Cinemascope in Native 1920x810 MJPEG Mode. An ingenious idea. Instead of stretching image during post-processing, let the camera stretch image frames horizontally where the frames are vertically stretched by anamorphic lens. 1920x810 MJPEG + 1.33x anamorphic lens combo gives undistorted 2.33:1 image straight out of the camera. 2x anamorphic lens + 1280x960 MJPEG combo gives 2.66:1 undistorted image. See MJPEG 4:3 for 2x anamorphic shooting.

MJPEG 720p Compression
  • E1 >= E2 >= E3 >= E4: http://timelapser.net/about/ says "MJPEG quality settings are a tradeoff between image quality and recording duration. Setting E1 Table: 4 makes a big difference. My understanding is that the E1 Quality/Table setting is used initially and E2/E3/E4 are a fallback if the camera can’t keep up. As we’re only recording at 2fps this is unlikely to be a problem, but I recommend using settings that descend down from your E1 quality setting. E1 Quality: 400 will give you super-high quality jpegs, but only about twenty minutes of recording time at 1080p."

MJPEG 480p Compression
  • F1 >= F2 >= F3 >= F4: Prolly similar to the E* family

AVCHD Compression
  • Video Bitrate FSH/SH: for 1080i60 FSH and 720p60 SH
  • Video Bitrate FH/H: for 1080i60 SH and 720p60 H
  • Video Bitrate 24H: for 1080p24 H
  • Video Bitrate 24L: for 1080p24 L

AVCHD GOP Length: I frames, B frames, P frames. Vitaliy recommended a factor of a targeted mode. e.g. GOP 3/6/12 for 24p. Official Low GOP topic is covering the topic well.

Microphone AGC 0 Setting: ORLY? Almost disabling AGC? Nope. This is a setting for level 1.

Patches For Testers

AVCHD Compression
  • Video Bitrate 24H ADD: How is it different from the end user's Video Bitrate 24H setting? @Vitaliy Very different. You can try to use it for testing, but normally you don't need to.
  • Overall Bitrate & Bitrate 2: This applies to all video modes? @Vitaliy Yes. It is some time related constant, in fact. Not bitrate. But it can affect bitrate.

AVCHD Research: Video Buffer, Video Buffer 24p, Audio Buffer: Increase them as increasing Video Bitrates?

AVCHD Encoder
  • Quantizer tables: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/366/pro-avchd-quantization-process No freaking idea. Maybe @driftwood's post helps.
  • Quantizer scaling tables: See @driftwood's post
  • Frame buffer size: It covers all modes.
  • Encoder frame limit: What?
  • Bitrate settings: High Top, High Bottom, Low Top, Low Bottom? Always keep lower bitrate settings within 95-70% of high bitrate settings. Otherwise, you'll see a dramatic bitrate drop in the low modes. There is currently a known drop in bitrate in the first frame set or GOP - known as the blip. Still to find out a definitive answer as to why.

ExTele check disable: I don't understand the description, "Disables ex tele converter checks, so it won't reset as usual"
