I'm planning to buy a GH3, But someone on a french website warned me that when the LCD or the EVF shuts down, the stream stops. The only setting appears to be the LCD/EVF "wake" time : max 5 minutes. So after 5 minutes no more HDMI stream !

I need the camera to be on 6 or 7 hours per day, sending HDMI stream continuously (GH3 not recording : in pause mode). Someone could confirm the 5 min issue ? If it's true, could it be fixed via hack or something ?

PS, Vitaliy answered me earlier in this thread : http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5810/studio-setup-with-atem-television-studio-switcher-and-ghx/p1

but I'm wondering if someone with a GH3 could check this 5 minutes issue.

Thanks Al

ColorGHear [PART 2] http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5346/colorghear-part-2 Sat, 01 Dec 2012 16:40:03 +0000 shian 5346@/talks/discussions The old thread had grown too large so here's the new one.

To access the old thread - go here: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1817/colorghear-toolkit-color-grading-system-for-ae/p1

So as not to be misleading, ColorGHear is a system, and not so much a plug-in... a school of thought supported through the ColorGHear Toolkit -which is a set of MODULAR PRESETS for After Effects and ColorGHear Pro - which is a set of MODULAR LUTs for Davinci Resolve, FCP7, Premiere Pro, and Adobe Speedgrade, and is not what you'd consider a classical style plug-in.

The toolkit isn't a collection of drag and drop "looks" like Magic Bullet. It is a series of nodes which contain a set of grading instructions or "macros" (a set of operations), specially designed to work with each other to speed up your workflow. Along with these nodes, comes a system of grading which replaces having to perform the minutia of individual corrections by hand. Learned through the online tutorials, this system will give you speedy and precise grades. It is this precision that prevents you from "bending" your images like with standard methods which is what allows me to get such drastic and dramatic grades from normally flimsy DSLR codecs.

As a professional colorist, I noticed that because of the way the color channels in RGB video are tied together; that typical methods like the Color Balance tool, and the 3-way Color Corrector will actually bend an RGB image out of shape. So in order to maximize the full potential of any given image, I had to learn a method of grading that would avoid damaging the footage. I called this method "precision grading."

I also noticed that in executing these precision grades, I was performing the same operations over and over. I began taking notes on what these operations were, and trying to determine if it were possible to create a set of interacting preset nodes that would save me time in having to repeatedly perform these operations.

I soon discovered 37 distinct sets of operations that would serve to correctly grade any, and all footage. 6 of these macros cancel each other out, and only 1 of those 6 could be effectively used at any given time leaving me with 32 nodes - giving me 1,024 possible combinations. Over a thousand distinct grades. Over time, I added some other tools to the set which now sits at 74 nodes all of which are designed to be used in conjunction with the other nodes. (69, if you subtract the 5 canceling nodes) which brings the total to 4,761 distinct grades.

The precision method I mention above is demonstrated here. Along with how the 3-way Color Corrector damages your footage.

The power of ColorGHear is presented in the video demonstrations below.

ColorGHear is available at http://www.ColorGHear.com

(ColorGHear Pro not yet available to the public)

Having *finally* (is almost 2021!) upgraded my YouTube vlogging camera from a Panasonic G6 to a GH4! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24824/having-finally-is-almost-2021-upgraded-my-youtube-vlogging-camera-from-a-panasonic-g6-to-a-gh4 Thu, 03 Dec 2020 10:22:10 +0000 IronFilm 24824@/talks/discussions Have loved the Panasonic G6, such a big upgrade from the original Panasonic GH1 (thank you VK! This forum was fantastic for me with the GH1) which I started this filmmaking journey with (although technically it was my girlfriend's Nikon D90 or my sister's Canon T2i that I borrowed for the first handful of shoots), but in recent years I've been considering an upgrade. First to the Panasonic G7, simply to get 4K, but as the price of the Panasonic G85 kept on coming down on eBay that tempted me instead for the better low light, the live HDMI out, and of course the IBIS! But this is a slippery slope, because as I wait... then the Panasonic G9 got that big 10bit firmware update, and their prices were coming down with time too. (& more firmware updates came out too, such as better AF for the G9, and being a USB webcam for the G9)

Never really seriously considered the Panasonic GH5 or GH4, as they always got the most attention, thus I felt they always kept up the highest prices on the secondhand market, compared to the value that the Panasonic G series offered instead. But I still kept half an eye on the GH4/GH5 sales, just in case. Even considered a few alternative options such as Fujifilm, or for instance the Panasonic S1 that I bid on last week until the price shot up far too high for my tastes. In the end I kept on coming back to Panasonic MFT as offering by far the best value for money. (& the fact I already owned MFT lenses helped too)

However, today I won an action for a Panasonic GH4 for only NZ$417! (less than US$300) That was a price too good to ignore (but I doubt I'd have bid a penny higher), thus to my surprise I find out I've settled with the old Panasonic GH4 as the upgrade from the G6 I'm going with. Even though I'd like the IBIS / better high ISO / etc of the G85 or G9, it isn't such a bad thing to have settled for this cheap deal of a GH4 because it is just going to be for casual vlogging usage to create simple content for my YouTube channel. (https://www.youtube.com/SoundSpeeding/)

One very small benefit of going with the Panasonic GH4, is that when the price of the Panasonic G9 finally tumbles down to sub US$300 (right after the Panasonic G12 gets released?), then I'll be able to use the same Panasonic DMW-BLF19 batteries in both! (which wouldn't have been possible if I'd got a G7 or G85)

Now, how many more years until I upgrade my "big camera", the Sony PMW-F3? The F3 is a truly fantastic camera! I still think there isn't a better 1080 camera at this price point (but the world is moving onto 4K). Had it a fair few years, unfortunately the F3's popularity didn't last too long because the Canon C300mk1 got released shortly after and the C300mk1 just dominated the low / mid end professional work for that generational cycle. (interesting how the secondhand F3 has seen a bit of renaissance in 2019/2020 thanks to Caleb Pike & others)

Been wanting to do the natural upgrade to a Sony PMW-F5 for a while now, but can't justify it because as a Sound Mixer I don't do a high enough volume of camera work. The FS7/FS5 or even a secondhand FS700R might very well make more sense! (I like for instance all the work done with the FS700R by this guy: https://vimeo.com/paulbates However the FS700 isn't as nicely ergonomic as the FS5! That compact size is fantastic)

Just keeping my eyes open for the right secondhand deal, in absolutely no rush whatsoever. (as I'm still primarily by far a Production Sound Mixer, as what I do day to day)

The camera output is only clean when recording. This limits the time i can use the camera for streaming because the card is full. Is it possible to hach the camera to record 1080 at an extremely LOW bitrate so the card never gets full? What numbeR do i have to change in the .ini file to record at a low bitrate?

100-400mm Panasonic Leica DG zoom lens http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13394/100-400mm-panasonic-leica-dg-zoom-lens Thu, 16 Jul 2015 03:24:59 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 13394@/talks/discussions image

CES announcement.

Specs

Panasonic is developing the first LEICA DG 100-400mm / F4.0-6.3 telephoto zoom lens (35mm camera equivalent: 200-800mm) for the Micro Four Thirds system standard to expand the lineup of DSLM (Digital Single Lens Mirrorless) digital interchangeable lenses.

The LEICA DG lenses are designed and developed under the stringent quality standard certified by Leica that boast excellent optical performance. Four single focal length LEICA DG lenses have already introduced to the market and have been highly acclaimed by users worldwide.

The new telephoto zoom achieves exceptional imaging performance over the entire zoom range. It also features high speed digital signal exchange at 240 fps to comply with the high-speed, high-precision AF (Auto Focus) with DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology on LUMIX G cameras. Together with the POWER O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer), it lets users to focus on the target quickly to capture crisp, clear images. In addition, the new lens is both light and small and is splash/dust-proof to withstand heavy field use. As the new telephoto zoom lens excels in size and weight, it enables handheld 800mm (35mm camera equivalent) telephoto shooting without using a tripod.

7-14mm Panasonic or 9-18mm Olympus http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5238/7-14mm-panasonic-or-9-18mm-olympus- Mon, 19 Nov 2012 08:00:37 +0000 chocobanana 5238@/talks/discussions Hi there,

I'm really interested in a rectilinear Ultra Wide Angle lens for my GH2 but can't decide between these two. I intend to do video and long exposures with it in all conditions (including bright daylight), that's why I'm interested in the ability to fit filters. On the other hand, the idea of going for a wide angle lens is to get that massive perspective, I'm really fond of it for architectural shots.

These two lens seem to be those that offer the widest rectilinear perspectives for the M4/3. I'm not interested in a fish-eye because I would like to shoot 1080p/i without loosing quality after de-fishing. If you aren't already familiar with these two lenses, I would sum up the plus and cons that really matter to me like so:

Panasonic 7-14mm (+ widest reach) (- can't fit filters)

Olympus 9-18mm (+ can fit filters) (- doesn't go as wide)

Price, constant aperture, small quality differences don't really matter to me.

In summary, as far as it goes in terms of what matters to me, what one has the other doesn't. That's why it's so hard to choose for me. Yes, I already researched this comparison thoroughly but never saw it applied particularly to video. Perhaps someone here faced the same dillema and managed to make a decision or could provide a recommendation based on something I'm unable to see here.

Care to comment?

Used GH2, sensor streaking or flaring http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/23748/used-gh2-sensor-streaking-or-flaring Mon, 06 Apr 2020 18:05:57 +0000 TreyM 23748@/talks/discussions Hello all,

I just bought a used GH2 from eBay. When I got the camera, I quickly noticed some horizontal magenta sensor flaring/streaking when pointing at a bright light over a dark background. I tested the same lens on a GH4 and the issue was not present, so I am certain this is from the sensor. I sent the following video to the seller and he refunded me and told me to keep the camera. Is the behavior in the video below known behavior for the GH2, or is it indeed faulty? This is the only lighting scenario where the camera does this. It is otherwise perfectly fine and usable. Admittedly, the ISO is really high at 3200, but I'm hoping it's not normal GH2 behavior.

Since about a year this is not possible any more. I have to switch the GH5 on go to replay mode and press the Wifi button on top. Only then I can go to the Iphone, connect the Wifi and then it all works.

Any suggestions what to do to to be able to do it all from the Iphone again without touching the GH5?

Why no 400mm or longer M43 Lenses http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6349/why-no-400mm-or-longer-m43-lenses Wed, 06 Mar 2013 17:46:54 +0000 ragnar 6349@/talks/discussions I might be answering this question myself but I would still like to hear from others on this topic. As far as I know 300mm is the top end for M43 lenses. I own the Pana 100-300 lens and use it a lot for bird photography and I enjoy its qualities. I'm wondering if there is a specific technological reason why neither Pana or Oly have not come out with a longer M43 lens. Is it just a size consideration as it would be too big for M43 cams? I guess I could understand that. Maybe there is no demand for anything longer than 300mm for M43?

I've adapted several longers FD lenses to my GH2 and it works of course but I would really love a true M43 400mm or longer lens. I suppose with the Metabones thingy I could adapt a Canon 600mm EF lens and go that route but that'll cost many benjamins for sure. My 100-300 lens is very portable so I think that 400mm could be done but perhaps 300mm is the technological sweet spot for M43 cams and lenses and going 400mm would be just too difficult?

GH5 froze during recording, resulting in unreadable mdt file http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16854/gh5-froze-during-recording-resulting-in-unreadable-mdt-file Thu, 04 May 2017 12:30:06 +0000 SuperTinyMagnet 16854@/talks/discussions Hey folks! I need help repairing a video file. The other day during a professional shoot, my new GH5 froze up when I hit the record button to stop recording at the end of a 23-minute (!!!) interview take. Even after flipping the power-off switch, the camera stayed on and frozen. I had to remove the battery pack. Now I have an unreadable/unfinished .mdt file that can't be read or played back. Has anyone run into this before?

I'm also wondering how I can prevent this from happening again. I was shooting 4K 10-bit 23.976fps using a Lexar U3 150 mb/s SD card with 128GB of storage (I had used 122gb by the end of the take, and had a few gigs to spare.) I was also using a 3rd party battery by Newmowa, but it had plenty of charge remaining.

Thanks for reading! Any leads at all would be hugely appreciated.

GH5 photojournalism in PARIS "Revolution" http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/22081/gh5-photojournalism-in-paris-revolution Sun, 19 May 2019 09:39:14 +0000 eurocameraman 22081@/talks/discussions Since 6 months, demonstration against government and neo-liberalim politics are taking place allover France every Saturday, know as Yellow vest protest.

This means 27 weeks of street demonstration with, violence from both sides and repression is now out of limits with new laws allowing abusive arrests and violence with hundreds of severely wounded protesters. However, protesters are not willing to give up.

I personally followed 14th of those events in Paris, as photojournalist. I own a wide range of cameras such as Nikon D750, Nikon D5500, Sony A7M2 and GH5.

After different test and try, I decided to stick to the GH5 as I can easily switch from photos to videos. Also, having more depth of field at wide aperture is an advantage in this kind of environment.

I just wanted to share some of my shots, to show what M43 can do in a difficult working surrounding.

I am using Lumix lenses : 7-14 mm f/4, 12-35 mm f/2.8, 35-100 mm f/2.8, 100 - 300 mm f/4-5.6

Update: I created a Flickr Album here with 118 pictures, most of them with explicative caption : https://www.flickr.com/gp/eurocameraman/kH0H7X
